Workshops set up by William Gaskill and Max Stafford-Clark resulted in a unique working method which placed actors and director in collaboration with the playwright. The Archives contain business correspondence, financial records, legal documents, photographs, production files, promotional materials, and scripts (published and original prompt copies) of several plays. Researchers should contact Archives and Special Collections to request collections, as many are stored offsite. History A British experimental theatre group founded in 1974 by Max Stafford-Clark, David Hare, and David Aukin, the Joint Stock Theatre Group was dedicated to developing new writing for the theatre. Workshops set up by William Gaskill and Max Stafford-Clark resulted in a unique working method which placed actors and director in collaboration with the playwright. In January of 1974, the Joint Stock Theatre Group presented its inaugural production, The Speakers, adapted by William Gaskill and Max Stafford-Clark from a book by Heathcote Williams. Major productions which followed included Cloud Nine, Epsom Downs, Fanshen, Fen, The Great Celestial Cow, The Ragged Trousered Philanthropist, and Sanctuary. The last of Joint Stock's productions, A Child in the Heartand Promised Landwere offered during the 1988-1989 season. A revenue client of the Arts Council of Great Britain since 1974, Joint Stock relied heavily on government subsidy to remain financially solvent. Its demise was imminent when, due to general economic woes and changing government policy towards the arts, the company was dropped from the client list. Because the "Joint Stock Method" required an inordinate amount of time to mount a production thus limiting the number of productions annually, and because the company presented mainly new, unproven plays, Joint Stock could not survive financially without Arts Council support. In June of 1991, the Joint Stock Theatre Group Board of Directors gave instructions that the Companies House be informed that the company had ceased to exist and should be struck from the Register of Companies Scope and Content of Collection Organized into eight series: 1. Financial Records, 2. Photographs, 3. Production Files, 4. Scripts, 5. Clippings, 6. Promotional Materials, 7. Company Business, 8. Sound recordings. Access Collection is open for research. • Shakespeare on Film, Video & Stage
William Shakespeare on Film, Video and Stage Titles in bold red font with an asterisk (*) represent the crème de la crème – first choice titles in each category. These are the titles you’ll probably want to explore first. Titles in bold black font are the second- tier – outstanding films that are the next level of artistry and craftsmanship. Once you have experienced the top tier, these are where you should go next. They may not represent the highest achievement in each genre, but they are definitely a cut above the rest. Finally, the titles which are in a regular black font constitute the rest of the films within the genre. I would be the first to admit that some of these may actually be worthy of being “ranked” more highly, but it is a ridiculously subjective matter. INFORMATION TO USERS This material was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced info the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on untii complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation.

This thesis could not have been completed without the help and support from my supervisors Dr. ANA MARÍA FRAILE MARCOS and Dr. PEDRO ÁLVAREZ MOSQUERA. I am truly indebted to them for their constant guidance, invaluable feedback, suggestions, personal attention and endless encouragement during my doctoral years despite their already heavy loads of responsibility. No words can express my thanks to my mother, sisters, brother, cousins and wife for their continuous encouragement. Particular thanks are due to my wife and two daughters (Jana and Mariam) who endured and supported me during the worst of times. All respect is due to the soul of my father who was eager to see me a teaching assistant at the Faculty of Arts, Department of English. This thesis is dedicated to him and my mother. Abstract This thesis offers a comprehensive cognitive stylistic analysis of three contemporary novels by Egyptian writers: Karim Alrawi's (2015) Book of Sands; Khalid Al Khamissi's (2006) Taxi and Naguib Mahfouz's (1985) The Day the Leader Was Killed.
