“Cue’s Farm was held under a “Copyhold” grant made on 1 April 1839 to Thomas Cue and for the lives of William Cue, Joseph Cue. When he was old enough Joseph was pushed off to Canada with the simple instructions “to get lost” and thus secure the copyright until it could be proved that all 3 nominees had died. This proved successful that by the time the Ecclesiastical Commissioner (land owners) were able to establish their claim to the farm he would have been about 110!!”. I am informed by Messrs. Cluttons, Agents for the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, that it is

This proved successful that by the time the Ecclesiastical Commissioner (ie. the land owners) were able to establish their claim to the farm he would have been about 110!!. I am informed by Messrs. Cluttons, Agents for the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, that it is not unusual, even in more modern times, for the Commissioners or Messrs. Cluttons to be totally unaware of the existence of lives, or where they lived, in similar cases”. Source from the book entitled “Just for a Lark” by R H Wilson. Republished 2008.

Information from Lester Glenn Cue's memories. In 1871 Joseph Cue with his family came to Willow Twp., Crawford Co., IA and bought land for $2.50 per acre. He improved it some as he could. Nearly lost it because of hard times, no money, and no value for his crops. He eventually got started and obtained more land; he gave each of his children 80 acres. After Susanna died, he lived for a short time with the two youngest children; he retired in 1903; he moved to Wichita, Kansas. He married a Wichita lady, she led him a merry chase, trimmed his sails a bit and dumped. him. (description by Lester Cue). Joseph was a member of the Church of .

Some interesting details donated by Barry O'Byrne (many thanks) on Frank are as follows ….

© Wiltshire OPC/2017/John Pope Page 22 “My wife’s mother was born in the Highworth Workhouse in 29 October 1920. She was born outside of wedlock, the daughter of a servant girl called Ethel Sherman. Ethel named the child Vera. I am sure that you are aware that the government, early on in the last century, decided that, rather than placing the name workhouse on birth certificates, they ordered local authorities to register such births by the address only, in order that the name workhouse did not affect these babies in later life. My mother-in-law therefore, was registered as being born at 8, Highworth Road, Stratton St Margaret, Wiltshire. My wife’s grandmother was Ethel Sherman. She lived at Bishopstone. My mother-in–law, Vera, was always told that her father’s name was Frank Cue, a local farmer. Ethel Sherman died in 1971 at the age of 69. After we married and I started getting interested in genealogy my mother-in-law wrote to one of her aunts asking her if she could confirm this story. Her aunt replied in 1994. The relevant part of her letter is below. For some reason Ethel Sherman was always known by the family as Fe fe.

“Dear Vera I don’t think I can be of much help, why ever didn’t you ask Fe fe, she could have given you much more information than I can but I will tell you all I can, I am 85 now, I cannot tell you the date Fe fe married George. I remember then it was a surprise to us as we had never met him but they always seemed happy together. You ask about your father, he was a farmer lived at Bishopstone he denied it at first but my dad took him to court and of course he won the day, but when they all came from court, Frank Cue, the farmer went to milk his cows and collapsed and died so you can guess the rest, my dad was over the moon he had won his day. Poor old Fe fe you see in them days it was a terrible thing to have a baby, but you all survived and my dear old mum, I remember she was so upset, however dad won his day, Bless him that was all that mattered but Vera don’t worry about it now, life is too short, I’m sorry I don’t know how Fe fe and George met, Ivy””

Ethel was employed as a live in servant by Frank Cue and his wife from 2nd February 1920 for ten days. The purpose of which was to help Mrs Cue with her first child whilst she was about to give birth to her second child. Mrs Cue’s second child, Ronald was born 28 March 1920. It is strange that she left this job before Mrs Cue gave birth! I have with the help of a local genealogist, found copies of two articles in local newspapers relating to this case. The first article appeared in the North Wilts Herald 21st January 1921. The case was brought by the Swindon and Highworth Union for maintenance of the child. The case was adjourned for two weeks. Another article appeared in the Swindon Advertiser on the 4th February following the second hearing. At this time the case against Frank Cue was dismissed. The newspaper account of the case is sketchy, but it would appear that the Board of Guardians failed to give any further evidence. The counsel for Frank Cue made a statement that was completely false but this appears to have gone unchallenged. He claimed that the dates between when Ethel was living at Frank Cue’s home and the birth of Vera do not add up. This was untrue. The dates add up absolutely. Another strange fact was that Frank Cue’s counsel said that Ethel and her father were not independent witnesses. There does not appear to be any reference to the fact that Frank Cue and his wife could also not be considered independent witnesses. His other witnesses seem of dubious independence with much of the evidence that would today be considered hearsay. Ethel was one of five sisters and one brother. At the time of working for Frank Cue, three of Ethel’s teenage sisters were still living at home. The man leaving the house early one morning if he existed could have been anyone. He could have been a guest of any member of the family. It is also difficult to see how anyone could have been seen at the house at that time of year when the evenings were dark. It is also interesting that none of the “visitors” in this small village are named! Frank Cue did in fact die on 12 October 1927 of Vulvula disease of the Heart at the age of just 41. An inquest was held 14 October 1927. However, I can find no details of this inquest. I have also been unable to find any details of where he was at the time of his death. Frank Cue’s obituary appeared 21st October 1927 in the North Wilts Herald. There are no clues as to the circumstances of his death in the obituary. I also have been unable to find any reports of a later court case. As for Ethel and Vera: Ethel married shortly after the death of Frank Cue on 20 November 1927. She was married in Tonbridge in Kent. She and her husband then lived there for the rest of their lives. At the time of Ethel’s marriage, Vera was around seven years old. Ethel and her husband did not have any children of their own but Vera adopted her stepfather’s surname. Vera grew up and was married. She and her husband had two daughters. Both these daughters proved to be very academic, both ending up with, among many qualifications, with Masters degrees. My

Her sister spent most of her career teaching handicapped children. Vera lived to the age of 90 and saw the birth of three great grandchildren.
