ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: WAR AND RESISTANCE: THE PHILIPPINES, 1942-1944 James Kelly Morningstar, Doctor of History, 2018 Dissertation directed by: Professor Jon T. Sumida, History Department What happened in the Philippine Islands between the surrender of Allied forces in May 1942 and MacArthur’s return in October 1944? Existing historiography is fragmentary and incomplete. Memoirs suffer from limited points of view and personal biases. No academic study has examined the Filipino resistance with a critical and interdisciplinary approach. No comprehensive narrative has yet captured the fighting by 260,000 guerrillas in 277 units across the archipelago. This dissertation begins with the political, economic, social and cultural history of Philippine guerrilla warfare. The diverse Islands connected only through kinship networks. The Americans reluctantly held the Islands against rising Japanese imperial interests and Filipino desires for independence and social justice. World War II revealed the inadequacy of MacArthur’s plans to defend the Islands. The General tepidly prepared for guerrilla operations while Filipinos spontaneously rose in armed resistance. After his departure, the chaotic mix of guerrilla groups were left on their own to battle the Japanese and each other. While guerrilla leaders vied for local power, several obtained radios to contact MacArthur and his headquarters sent submarine-delivered agents with supplies and radios that tie these groups into a united framework. MacArthur’s promise to return kept the resistance alive and dependent on the United States. The repercussions for social revolution would be fatal but the Filipinos’ shared sacrifice revitalized national consciousness and created a sense of deserved nationhood. The guerrillas played a key role in enabling MacArthur’s return. -

Labrador, Ph.D. Jainab Aimee Tahil-Altillero ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION: The 7th Asian National Museum Association meeting and conference this 29th – 31st October in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is an occasion for the Asian museum members to gather and share its individual museums’ best practices and standards. This will encourage the other members to replicate the systems in all museums. National Museum of the Philippines is mandated to establish, manage and develop museums. As such, restoration of heritage structures is an important aspect of preserving the Filipino culture, arts and history. It is important to note that the success achieved in all efforts to socially unify through culture, arts and history, the challenges comes alongside its process. Challenges comes in many forms starting from the availability of funds and extends to many factors depending on the government’s priority. In the case of the National Museum of the Philippines, it took a big leap of restoring the heritage structures and the rest followed like improvement of repositories for preservation of collections, improvement of exhibitions, research endeavors, museum services and others. -

The FIC-NCR Newsletter First Issue FIC-NCR 1 Message from the President Art Retos I would like to welcome all of you to the maiden issue of the first-ever FIC-NCR newsletter. As your chosen leader, I am delighted to start this initiative, which is one of the legacies I want to leave behind if only because I believe it can help bring us closer together as a community. For this same reason, I hope that the next FIC-NCR president will continue this initiative and make it better. When you elected me as FIC-NCR President, it took awhile before that title sink in. Leading our very diverse group was a thought that didn’t occur to me nor did I plan for it. Then oath-taking day came and officially I have become your President. That’s when I started to dig deep in my thoughts on how best I could lead us towards achieving one goal: building a closer and more united Filipino community in the national capital region of India. I went back in time when there’s no formal Filipino association, no presidents nor officers, just good old times at which Filipinos from Gurgaon came to Delhi or vice versa for our weekly potluck lunches. The theme “Balik Saya” jelled in my mind. I wanted to keep bringing the fun back to our community, even turn it up a notch, through activities with which Filipi- nos from different parts of the NCR would come together – sharing food and company, jokes and entertainment -- all geared towards our common goal. -

In the Philippine context, the spectator sport of boxing has grown to be a phenomenon in recent years, perhaps owing to the successive triumphs of contemporary Filipino pugilists in the international boxing scene. This thesis focuses on the case of Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao whose matches bring together contemporary Philippine society into a “ringside community”, a collective united by its support of a single fighter bearing the brunt for the nation. I assert that Pacquiao’s stature has transcended that of the sports realm, as he is constructed as a national (i.e., not just sport) hero. As such, I study this phenomenon in two ways. The first part of my analysis focuses on how a narrative of heroism has been instilled in Philippine society through the active promotion of its past heroes. Inherent to this study’s discussion of the Filipino ringside community and heroism is the notion of the habitus. Defined by Pierre Bourdieu as a set of inculcated dispositions which generate practices and perceptions, “a present past that tends to perpetuate itself into the future by reactivation in similarly structured practices” (Bourdieu, 6), the concept of habitus can be directly applied to how the need for a heroic narrative has been inculcated within Philippine contemporary society. -

As defined in this work, in a decentralized state, local officials assume greater discretionary control over public expenditures, authority over the implementation of government policies, and latitude in managing outbreaks of social unrest within their jurisdictions. As a result, they become the direct targets of most protests aimed at the state and the primary mediators of actions directed at third-party, non-state actors. A decentralized state therefore presents not one but a multitude of loci for protests, diminishing claimants‘ ability to use the central state as a unifying target and fulcrum for organizing national contentious movements. For this reason, decentralized autocracies are expected to face more fragmented popular oppositions and exhibit higher levels of durability than their more centralized counterparts. To examine this claim, I conduct four comparative case studies, organized into pairs of autocracies that share a common regime type but vary in terms of state decentralization. -
