It reminded everyone of the long history of English – Polish cultural relations: the new theatre was built on the site of the only Shakespearian playhouse to have been constructed outside England during the Bard’s lifetime. At the turn of the sixteenth century and in the early seventeenth century, English acting troupes came to Gdańsk, then one of the wealthiest cities in Europe, following the footsteps of English merchants who came to trade Polish wheat. Having received license from the City Council, the actors performed plays and impressed the burghers and the audiences of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth audiences with their acting skills. Eng- lish actors travelled across Europe to reach a town made known to them by merchants and traders whom they met on their way. They travelled this far in hope of earning income and performing the plays in places other than Lon- don where the competition between theatre companies was growing. William Shakespeare’s Hamlet unveils the realities of the life of English travelling act- ing companies. The Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre is thus a worthy memorial to this long tradition of Shakespeare theatre performed in seventeenth century Gdańsk. There were, however, other cultural routes, other books and theatres, which the Englishmen knew and visited. A lesser-known side of British and Polish historical relations is the presence of the English and Scottish Catho- lics in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. During the years of the Eliz- abethan settlement, British Catholics came to the Commonwealth to find a safe haven and support. English and Scottish Jesuits were amongst those who founded the first Jesuit Colleges in Poland and Lithuania. As the first- generation professors of the Academy of Vilnius they taught mathematics, astronomy, philosophy and theology. As these men travelled across the Conti- nent to the Baltic Sea, they brought with them their stories recorded in their books, which would otherwise have been suppressed if not confiscated and sometimes burnt. Prohibited books, subversive publishing and censorship in early modern Poland and England: these were the topics which an international group of scholars discussed on 24 – 26 of September 2014 in the Palace of Bishop Erazm Ciołek (1474–1522), royal secretary to Polish King Alexander Jagiellon (1461–1506), a distinguished bibliophile and illuminator of books. Drawing upon extensive manuscript research, it focuses on the reign of Mary I (1553-1558), when the official return to Roman Catholicism was accompanied by the prosecution of Protestants for heresy, and the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), when the state religion again shifted to Protestantism. I argue that the cognitive dissonance created by these seesaw changes of official doctrine necessitated a society in which religious mutability became standard operating procedure. For most early modern men and women it was impossible to navigate between the competing and contradictory dictates of Tudor religion and politics without conforming, dissimulating, or changing important points of conscience and belief.

Peregrinations to holy pla− Mces have existed almost since the beginning of mankind. Apart from the religious values, pilgrimages have also constituted an important element in the deve− lopment of the geographical horizons of societies. Also they have always been one of the main factors determining religious culture in its broadest meaning. In Poland, the pilgrimage tradition goes back to pagan times, while the early days of Christian pilgrimages could be noted as early as the 11th century. At present, about 5−7 million people a year participate in the pilgrimage migrations. This is about 15% of the population of Poland. The pilgrims are Roman and Orthodox Catholics as well as members of the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Muslim. In the past, the pilgrimage groups included the members of Jewish congregations and during the years of partitions also the Polish Protestants. The Poles now account for more than 3−5% of the Christian pilgrims all over the world and for about 20% in Europe. At the moment, in Poland, there are more than 500 pilgrimage sanctuaries. The absolute majority (98%) of the pilgrimage centres belong to the Roman Catholic Church. Among those Catholic centres dominant position belongs to St. Mary’s sanctuaries. There are about 430 of them and out of this number 200 possess crowned effigies of Our Lady. The most important centres have acquired international fame.

Loyola University Maryland [email protected] Abstract Pedro de Ribadeneyra, first official biographer of Ignatius of Loyola, showered praise upon him and his companions for abandoning immoderate sentiment “for particular lands or places” in their quest for “the glory of God and the salvation of their neigh- bors.” Superior General Goswin Nickel praised a Society conceived in Spain, born in France, approved in Italy, and propagated in Germany and elsewhere. Out of diversity Ignatius had forged unity. Ribadeneyra prayed that nothing would ever threaten this union. His prayers were not heard: the Society’s internal unity was often endangered by national sentiment despite congregational attempts to curtail and eliminate it. This article does not purport to be an exhaustive study of localism versus international- ism—although such a study is needed—but an investigation of relations between Irish and English Jesuits principally in the seventeenth century. Individual Jesuits did in fact cooperate, but there were limits. A proposal in 1652 that the independent Irish mission become part of the English mission was that limit. Arantxa DOMINGO MALVADI Los instrumentos de la predicación: manuscritos latinos sobre vicios y virtudes en la Biblioteca Histórica Marqués de Valdecilla The instruments of preaching: Latin manuscripts on vices and virtues in the Marqués de Valdecilla Historical Library Arantxa DOMINGO MALVADI Real Biblioteca-UCM Recibido: 10-01-2018 Aceptado: 11-01-2018 RESUMEN: La biblioteca Histórica Marqués de Valdecilla de la UCM de Madrid conserva entre sus fondos seis manuscritos en latín procedentes del Colegio mayor de San Ildefonso de Alcalá [BH MSS 72, 74, 75, 110, 112, 113]. Contienen sermones, manuales para el confesor, distinctiones e incluso obras de carácter parenético. Todos ellos comparten un tema común: el tratamiento de los vicios y las virtudes. En algunos de estos manuscritos el tema de los vicios o las virtudes aparece como central y está tratado ampliamente y en exclusividad; en otros, aparece desarrollado junto a otros temas morales. Fueron concebidos como instrumentos para facilitar al predicador su tarea en la predicación o catequesis. Este tipo de obras tuvo un gran auge durante la Edad Media, en especial entre los siglos XIII y XIV. El objetivo de este artículo es dar noticia de ellos, proceder a su identificación y descripción así como explicar su presencia en la colección primitiva de la Universidad Complutense.
