Because the 2012 Index is in the middle of the magazine (for those who wish to extract it and file it with your 2012 issues of MAR), the Foreign Forces section is split around it (and also smaller than usual - but a bigger section next month when other sections are usually smaller). We would like some more reports from the USA so, if you are visiting or travelling in the States, please remember to send Moray any details of what you see, no matter how short! Finally, just a quick explanation of the breakdown between MAR and @MAR - MAR mainly concentrates on movements, air show reports and sightings from around the World (we have had a recent complaint about lack of reports on exercises - the answer to that is that there are very few now in comparison to 10 years ago and we can only report on those that do take place if someone sends us a report on what they saw!). @MAR has a coverage of historical articles and run downs and current sections dealing with updating the air forces around the world - both serial wise and news wise. A sample copy can be seen at www.mar.co.uk. In the coming months 1 Regiment will move from Gutersloh, Germany and 9 Regiment from Dishforth to Yeovilton. 846NAS now have no operational Sea King HC.4’s and the Squadron is getting ready for disbandment. Finally all 847NAS Lynx AH.9As have left Yeovilton, leaving them no aircraft. It has just been discovered that the following name changes took place recently at the following MoD Facilities; The Defence College of Aeronautical Engineering (DCAE) at Cosford was changed to Defence School College of Aeronautical Engineering (DSAE) The School of Electrical & Aeronautical Engineering (SEAE) at Arborfield was changed to the Defence School of Electro-Mechanical Engineering (DSEME). The Defence College of Aeronautical Engineering (DCAE) at Gosport was changed to the Defence School of Marine Engineering (DSMarE). • Finding XH 903 – 33 Squadron's Gloster Javelin at the Jet Age Museum
Finding XH 903 – 33 Squadron’s Gloster Javelin at the Jet Age Museum Gloucestershire Airport, Saturday 4 August 2018 On a very hot Saturday afternoon last weekend, thus the relaxed but appropriate ‘Hart’s Head’ attire worn in some of the following photographs, I paid a visit to the excellent and informative Jet Age Museum at Gloucestershire Airport to investigate the story of the Gloster Javelin bearing 33 Squadron colours that appeared in the recent ‘Loyalty’ newsletter. Accompanied by close friend George Philp, a retired Squadron Leader, my Crewman Leader in Germany while I was on the other squadron, keen aviation buff and a member of the Jet Age Museum, we received a very friendly welcome from the staff at the front desk and all of the guides in the Display Hall, especially as the reason for the visit became apparent. 33 Squadron flew the two seat Javelin, Britain’s first delta wing all-weather fighter, in the Cold War-era between July 1958 and November 1962. The Javelin was equipped with interception radar, had an operational ceiling of 52 000 feet (almost 16 000 metres) and a speed of more than 700 mph (1 130 km/h). Armed with four 30mm cannons and, later, four Firestreak missiles it was built to intercept Russian bombers. Javelin first flew on 26 November 1951 and Gloster and its sister company, Armstrong Whitworth, would go on to build 435 aircraft for the RAF. Unfortunately, the Javelin was the last aircraft type that Gloster would produce and in 1963 the Gloster name disappeared completely from the list of British aircraft manufacturers as a result of the 1957 White Paper on Defence produced by Minister of Defence Duncan Sandys, in which, to counter the growing Soviet ballistic missile threat, he proposed a radical shift away from manned fighter aircraft in favour of missile technology, along with a rationalisation of the British military aircraft and engine industry.

  • Air Marshal Cliff Spink Profile
Air Marshal Clifford Spink CB CBE FCMI FRAeS Cliff started his flying career on the Jet Provost at Cranwell followed by advanced flying training on the Gnat. A period of tactics/weapons training on the Hunter preceded his Operational Conversion Training on the Lightning at RAF Coltishall. He then served with 111(F) Sqn at RAF Wattisham flying the Mk3/5 Lightning (weekends were spent as CFI of the local Gliding Club). Following a weapons instructor course he was reposted to ‘Treble One’ before moving to 56(F) Sqn in Cyprus on the Mk 6 Lighting. It was during this period that the Turks invaded the island and 56 Sqn were heavily involved in the subsequent air operations. The squadron returned to Wattisham in 1975 and Cliff finally left the Lightning Force the following year, having amassed 1,300hours on the ‘most exhilarating rocket ship any young man could wish to fly’. A ground tour followed and during this period (playing truant from his desk) he reacquainted himself with the Chipmunk to stay sane. In 1979 a refresher on JP5 followed by some Hunter FGA 9 weapons training preceded his introduction to the Phantom FGR2 at Coningsby. After a short course it was back to 111(F) Sqn now flying a mix of FGR2/FG1 Phantom at RAF Leuchars. Cliff was to be associated on and off with the F4 for the next 10 years and this included 2 ½ years as the Squadron Commander of 74(F) Sqn, ‘The Tigers’, flying the F4J (UK), and a year in the Falklands as Station Commander of Mount Pleasant Airfield.
