In fact, the major portion of verbal forms in Persian are compounds, composed of some initial non-verbal element and a second purely verbal element. Perhaps because Persian has not been subjected to intensive analysis these constructions have remained poorly described. The aim of this thesis is to examine the compound verb and to determine its status as an element in the grammar of Persian. 1 In the past few years several analyses of various aspects of Persian have appeared, often employing a transformationally based theoretical framework. 2 Preceding these were a number of normative and descriptive works. Included among the former are the much older works by Hadley (1776), Jones (1771) and an anon- ymous work published in 1790 that was written for the Persian speaker learning English. More recently, Lambton (1966) and Elwell-Sutton (19^3) have written grammars to be employed by students of the language. THE SHIFT AND EQUIVALENCE OF ENGLISH SENTENCE WORD ORDER AS IT IS TRANSLATED INTO INDONESIA Suyudi Universitas Gunadarma Jalan Margonda Raya 100 [email protected] ABSTRACT The problems of this research area: Are there equivalence and shifts between the English and Indonesian word order in the translation of English sentences into Indonesian? And the aims of this research are to describe equivalence and shift between the English and Indonesia word order in the translation of English sentences into Indonesian. This research uses qualitative method, which is descriptive because it relates with word and sentences. This research analyze the equivalence and shift occurred in the translation of English sentences into Indonesian. The data is taken from the English novel the switch by Sandra Brown and its translated version by Monica Dwi Chresnayani. Data are classified into two categories, they are: Equivalence and shifts occurred in the translation of English sentence word order as it is translated into Indonesian. The number of equivalence of the word order is 37% and the number of shifts is 63%. We can conclude that the shifts occurred more than the equivalence. Anita Memišević June 2017 ABSTRACT This thesis deals with the English prepositions off and from and their Croatian counterparts. Research was conducted in order to see how off and from are translated into Croatian. Upon concluding the first part of the research, a contrastive analysis was conducted in order to analyze the reverse situation. Using the information we gained from the first part of the research, we analyzed the most relevant translations of off and from which proved to be iz, sa and od. In the main part of the thesis, we explain the specific settings in which a preposition is used and analyze the translation we offer for it. A short overview of the second part of the research and the most relevant conclusions are presented next. The main findings and statistical data and interpretation are presented in the results part of the thesis. -

Olson i Abstract This thesis explores the difference between separable and non-separable transitive English phrasal verbs, focusing on finding a reason for the non-separable verbs’ lack of compatibility with the word order alternation which is present with the separable phrasal verbs. The analysis is formed from a synthesis of ideas based on the work of Bolinger (1971) and Gorlach (2004). A simplified version of Cognitive Construction Grammar is used to analyse and categorize the phrasal verb constructions. The results indicate that separable and non-separable transitive English phrasal verbs are similar but different constructions with specific syntactic reasons for the incompatibility of the word order alternation with the non-separable verbs. ii Table of Contents Abstract ...........................................................................................................................................
