Garth Ennis has pulled out all the stops to write the most depraved and twisted book of his career, one that also may be his most poignant human drama! Crossed is Ennis' horrifically visceral exploration of the pure evil that humans are truly capable of indulging and collected here are all ten heart-stopping chapters. About Garth Ennis Garth Ennis, a critically acclaimed writer from Northern Ireland, has been working in the comic book industry for over 20 years, and is most easily recognized as the creator of Preacher, and long-time contributor to Marvel's Punisher. Perhaps his greatest success in recent years has been CROSSED, a horror survival series published by Avatar Press, in which the world has been overrun by sadistic homicidal maniacs. Rating details. Our customer reviews This is Garth Ennis' take on the survival horror genre and it is a real tour de force. Crossed: V. 9 over the world people are degenerating into brutal, sadistic, psychopaths and turning on their fellow human beings. Each of them is marked with a cross-like scar hence the title on their faces, possibly as a judgement from God or perhaps as an echo back to the mediaeval sign for plague. These aren't shambling mindless zombies. They are intelligent, sneaky, tactical and co-operative. They can talk, use tools, guns, vehicles and tanks! This really is the stuff of nightmares. Initially when I browsed through this what struck me was the art. The graphic depictions of violence, death, dismemberment and sexual nastiness. It looks like torture-porn in comic book form and it was easy to dismiss this as simply a gratuitous excuse for Mr Ennis to push his envelope as far as possible. But it isn't. Like all good fiction of this genre it is about what the survivors do and what they learn about themselves. How much of their humanity are they willing to sacrifice just to stay alive? How much would you? As the story progresses it is less and less about the shock and awe atrocities of the crossed and more about us and how we behave. The crossed are simply ourselves without any inhibitions and that is truly frightening. Whilst the art is sickening in places it is expertly drawn by Jacen Burrows Crossed: V. 9 worked with Mr Ennis to great effect on He has an incredible gift for colour and lighting. The opening issues are a real treat in this respect. As the story progresses the pallet Crossed: V. 9 dull and subdued however. This could be to reflect the survivors' despair and isolation or a realistic portrayal of the wilderness setting but there is an incredible midnight snow scene that really leaps out at you. It is well written and there is usual moral message found in this genre that we Crossed: V. 9 worse than them. In this tale we are them so there can be no doubt on this score. There are some great shocks, surprises and reveals and Mr Ennis really keeps you on your toes. The story is part contemporary and part flashback but there is no indication of the switch between the two. Just count the number Crossed: V. 9 survivors and the more there are the further back in time you are so you can easily follow along. Whilst it does not have the depth that his magnum opus Preacher did this is easily his best stand alone work. It is 10 issues not the usual 6 and that really makes a difference to the pacing and breadth of this story and you really don't want it to end. Thumbs Up! Ennis does it Crossed: V. 9. In this graphic novel, he tells a brutal story Crossed: V. 9 survival He reaches down into the black bowels of human existance and dredges up the bile fuelled horror at the core. The art is excellent of course, it's Jacen Burrows and the characters are well drawn, even if a little unsympathetic. This is for adults only, and you'll need a strong stomach, for it asks you, as you read, to speculate on the moral choices you would have to make on the brink of extinction. It is harder hitting than The Walking Dead, which is saying something. Ennis has said that he has finished telling his story of the Crossed, but that doesn't mean that others will not take yo the Crossed: V. 9 baton and run with it. But his desire to have a harem who worship him opens himself up to the true horrors of the outback.

  • The Jewish Comic Book Industry, 1933-1954
“THE WHOLE FURSHLUGGINER OPERATION”: THE JEWISH COMIC BOOK INDUSTRY, 1933-1954 By Sebastian T. Mercier A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of History – Doctor of Philosophy 2018 ABSTRACT “THE WHOLE FURSHLUGGINER OPERATION”: THE JEWISH COMIC BOOK INDUSTRY, 1933-1954 By Sebastian T. Mercier Over the course of the twentieth century, the comic book industry evolved from an amateur operation into a major institution of American popular culture. Comic books, once considered mere cultural ephemera or quite simply “junk,” became a major commodity business. The comic book industry emerged out of the pulp magazine industry. According to industry circulation data, new comic book releases increased from 22 in 1939 to 1125 titles by the end of 1945. Comic book scholars have yet to adequately explain the roots of this historical phenomenon, particularly its distinctly Jewish composition. Between the years of 1933 and 1954, the comic book industry operated as a successful distinct Jewish industry. The comic book industry emerged from the pulp magazine trade. Economic necessity, more than any other factor, attracted Jewish writers and artists to the nascent industry. Jewish publishers adopted many of the same business practices they inherited from the pulps. As second-generation Jews, these young men shared similar experiences growing up in New York City. Other creative industries actively practiced anti-Semitic hiring procedures. Many Jewish artists came to comic book work with very little professional experience in cartooning and scripting. The comic book industry allowed one to learn on the job. The cultural world comic books emerged out of was crucially important to the industry’s development.

Page 127 MULTIMEDIA REVIEWS Crossed Writer: Garth Ennis, Artist: Jacen Burrows Publisher: Avatar Press Zombies are everywhere, especially in this edition of the Journal (see below for a review of the Walking Dead video game). Garth Ennis is well known as the creator of series such as the extraordinary Preacher and has also worked for DC , Marvel and 2000AD. In Crossed , Ennis finally gives us his take on the Zombie. Or in this case, rather, “The Crossed”. Actually, forget I mentioned zombies at all. These aren’t zombies. I mean, sure, they travel in large packs, violently attack other humans and turn others into ‘Crossed’ through direct fluid transfer (more on that later. Blagh, by the way). But still, these aren’t zombies, they’re Crossed. The graphic novel is told mostly in flashback, with a group of survivors travelling across a ravaged USA trying to reach Canada, their reasoning being that there’s less people in Canada and therefore less people who have become Crossed. The Crossed get their name from a cross shaped rash that spreads across their face, with those effected becoming incredibly violent and acting without inhibitions. In the comic book this involves various unpleasant acts including raping corpses (there’s a lot of this), killing other Crossed and hunting down the uninfected to try and turn them (in one incident this is done by firing bullets at them that have been covered in fluids from the Crossed. I’m not going to say here exactly what the fluid is but suffice to say it’s not something you want in a bullet wound, infectious or not).
