The day began with the Year : 6 Parade and the crowning of the May Monarch, followed by traditional outdoor fete games, lucky dip, exciting arts and crafts and lots of treats! Thank you to all the supporters of the School Association for giving their time and for organizing such a lovely day for the children. This week, we’ve held Gold Awards Assemblies. Children are nominated by staff or adults outside of school, for achievements usually in traditional activities such as Brownies, Cubs, Dance, Music and Sport. Awards are also given for effort in learning new skills and for Community Advocacy, such as litter picking or charity fundraising. This term, Seren in Year 1 received an award for her new skill identifying garden birds and feeding them from her new bird feeder. And this Year 6 pupil has achieved the Chief Scouts Silver Award – the top award for Cub Scouts. Well done! This term’s House Cup winners are Coles House with 159 house points (Halestrap 113, Buswell 110 and Isham 84). -
Comparison of Total Ionic Strength Adjustment Buffers III and IV in the Measurement of Fluoride Concentration of Teas
Comparison of total ionic strength adjustment buffers III and IV in the measurement of fluoride concentration of teas Shilpa Patel1, Narges Omid1, Fatemeh V Zohoori2, Anne Maguire1, Kevin J Waldron3 and Ruth A Valentine*1,3 1 Centre for Oral Health Research, School of Dental Sciences, Newcastle University, UK 2 School of Health and Social Care, Teesside University, UK 3 Institute for Cell and Molecular Biosciences, Newcastle University, UK Running title: Comparison of two buffers for measuring fluoride concentration of teas * Corresponding author: Ruth A Valentine School of Dental Sciences, Newcastle University, NE2 4BW, UK Email: [email protected] 1 Abstract Background: Tea is the second most consumed drink in the UK and a primary source of hydration; it is an important source of dietary fluoride (F) for consumers and also abundant in aluminium (Al). Varying ranges of F concentrations in teas have been reported worldwide which may be, in part, due to differences in analytical techniques used to measure this ion. The effect of using total ionic adjustment buffers (TISAB) III or IV, when measuring F concentration of black teas available in the UK was investigated and compared. Based on this evaluation the effect of 3 different infusion times: 1 min, 10 min and 1 h, caffeine content and tea form on the F contents of the tea samples was investigated. Methods: The F concentrations of 47 tea samples were measured directly using a fluoride ion-selective electrode, TISAB III and IV, and infusion times of 1min, 10min and 1h. Results: Mean (SD) F concentration of tea samples for all infusion times was statistically significantly higher (p<0.001) measured by TISAB IV (4.37 (2.16) mg/l) compared with TISAB III (3.54 (1.65) mg/l). -
