When I first moved to the UK, people kept offering me flapjacks and I was very confused as flapjack is another word for pancakes in the US and it would be something like 3 in the afternoon. As it turns out, flapjacks in the UK have these chewy oat bars, kind of like a granola bar, but especially for dessert in most cases because they are packed with brown sugar and golden syrup, and all things that aren't good for you (well). In this recipe flapjack, which are Mary Berry's original flapjacks, you are going to learn how to collect only 4 ingredients to make these delicacies! The story of Flapjacks First use of the word flapjack dates back to about the 16th century, so when you eat a pot of them, you basically eat the story in the best way possible. However, he may not have referred to the exact kind of oat bar that we know them as today. It appeared in the mid-1930s, and has been a staple in any Diet Brits with a good cup of tea ever since! There's no messing with 1/2 teaspoon of this and 1/2 teapoon of this. All you do is put a small pot over a medium low heat on the stove, while melting the butter, light brown sugar and golden syrup together. Stir continuously until the oil has melted. Then, pour in the oats, stir until fully incorporated, and immediately pour the oil into a square shape (or other shape, it won't affect the taste!) pan. For this recipe, I used an 8 inch square pan. Put it in the oven for 30 minutes, or until the top has gone golden brown (but not burnt), and pull it out and let it cool completely. Cut the flaps into squares or slices, and there you go! For more tips Some people would like to cut their flapjacks when completely cooled, while I would cut mine when it's still a little warm as I'm easier to cut through, but either way it's good. To get them out of the pan, I would basically cut all the slices into the pan and then go with the spatula and snatch one side. The rest will be easy to follow! What more can I add? I love simple flapjacks, but you can add in any supplements you can think of. Indeed, your imagination is the limit. Can you freeze Flapjacks? Yes! Put the flapjacks in the freezer for the future, up to 3 months. Individually wrap them for best results. Can I replace maple syrup with golden syrup? If you only have maple syrup instead of golden syrup, you can replace it if you want, if you are going to be happy with the final taste. It won't taste like a British counterpart, but it will do the same in the recipe. You also use golden syrup in Cornish dousing, so you can make this recipe as well if you manage to find it. Put the pan on the stove low heat and slowly melt the golden syrup, butter and brown sugar together. When the oil is completely melted, stir in the oats while the mixture is still on the stove. Once the oats are fully mixed, pour the mixture into the pan and even its it with a wooden spoon if necessary.
