Blondie, along with other Special Skills Dog Guides, are trained to help their handler operate light switches, retrieve objects, open and close doors, and most importantly, bark or activate an alert system when help is needed. The range of Canine Vision services they provide to their handler, from assisting in daily routines to keeping their handler out of harm’s way, makes them an essential partner to those in need Dog Guides and puts them in high demand. No longer am I second guessing whether or not I can go out,” says Fred. “Max acts as my eyes. As the fastest growing developmental disability in the country, autism is estimated to affect more than 1 in 165 people.* “She is also great to have for safety reasons. Each Dog Guide team costs approximately $20,000 to raise, train and place, yet Lions Awards & Fellowships they are provided at no cost to qualified applicants. From before a puppy is even born until after a Dog Guide team graduates, people support the cause knowing • Life Membership Awards and Fellowships to honour a Lion or individual they are helping to provide the gift of independence. • Judge Brian Stevenson Fellowships to recognize outstanding Canadian Lions and other deserving recipients while building an endowment fund to support the Dog Guide program
