His rise is also illustrative example of submission by author in this book that RSS has been able to design a system that can create ‘extraordinary achievers out of ordinary people’. When the first edition of Secrets of RSS was released, air was thick with motivated propaganda about ‘Saffron terror’ and RSS was the favourite whipping boy as the face of ‘Hindu fascism’. On one hand the RSS combine has been very active to prove that RSS ideology is close to Ambedkar’s ideology. In this direction RSS mouth pieces Organizer (English) and Panchjanya (Hindi) brought out special supplements on the occasion of anniversary of Ambedkar, praising him. This is very surprising as RSS is for Hindu nation while Ambedkar has pointed out that Hindu Raj will be the biggest calamity for dalits. The second debate is about Ambedkar-Gandhi. This came to forefront with Arundhati Roy’s introduction to Ambedkar’s ‘Annihilation of Caste’ published by Navayana. In her introduction ‘Doctor and the Saint’ Roy is critical of Gandhi’s various ideas. This digest brings together some of the essays and articles by various scholars-activists on the theme. Introduction The Invention of an Ethnic Nationalism he Hindu nationalist movement started to monopolize the front pages of Indian newspapers in the 1990s when the political T party that represented it in the political arena, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP—which translates roughly as Indian People’s Party), rose to power. From 2 seats in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian parliament, the BJP increased its tally to 88 in 1989, 120 in 1991, 161 in 1996—at which time it became the largest party in that assembly—and to 178 in 1998. At that point it was in a position to form a coalition government, an achievement it repeated after the 1999 mid-term elections. For the first time in Indian history, Hindu nationalism had managed to take over power. The BJP and its allies remained in office for five full years, until 2004. The general public discovered Hindu nationalism in operation over these years. But it had of course already been active in Indian politics and society for decades; in fact, this ism is one of the oldest ideological streams in India. It took concrete shape in the 1920s and even harks back to more nascent shapes in the nineteenth century. As a movement, too, Hindu nationalism is heir to a long tradition. Its main incarnation today, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS—or the National Volunteer Corps), was founded in 1925, soon after the first Indian communist party, and before the first Indian socialist party. -

"Investigations have revealed that the firing by the Congressman played a pivotal role in inciting the mob." — CM Narendra Modi on Chamanpura incident where former MP Ahsan Jaffri was burned alive with 19 of his relatives. On being asked what could have lead to the Ex-MP opening fire it was ‘probably in his nature’ to do so. — The Hindustan Times, March 2, 2002. Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Friday termed ‘barbaric’ the murder of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri along with 19 of his family members, but said there was firing from inside the house. -

NARIMAN, J. Leave granted. 1. The present appeal arises out of the demolition of Babri Masjid. We are concerned in this case with two FIRs lodged on 6th December, 1992. The first viz. Crime No.197 of 1992, is against lakhs of kar sewaks alleging the offences of dacoity, robbery, causing of hurt, injuring/defiling places of public worship, promoting enmity between two groups on grounds of religion, etc. The IPC offences were, therefore, under Sections 153-A, 295, 297, 332, 337, 338, 395 and 397. The second FIR 1 viz. FIR No.198 of 1992 was lodged against eight persons named therein - Mr. L.K. Advani, Mr. Ashok Singhal, Mr. Vinay Katiar, Ms. Uma Bharati, Ms. Sadhvi Ritambara, Mr. Murli Manohar Joshi, Mr. Giriraj Kishore and Mr. Vishnu Hari Dalmia, two of whom are dead due to passage of time viz. Mr. Ashok Singhal and Mr. Giriraj Kishore. The FIR alleges offences under Sections 153-A, 153-B and Section 505 IPC. 46 further FIRs pertaining to cognizable offences and 1 FIR pertaining to non- cognizable offences were also lodged. Initially, a Special Court set up at Lalitpur was to try these cases but subsequently notifications were issued by the State Government, after consultation with the High Court, dated 8 th September, 1993 whereby these cases were to be tried by a Special Court at Lucknow. -

The Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race & Ethnicity 433 Mendenhall Laboratory 125 South Oval Mall Columbus, OH 43210 www.kirwaninstitute.org Reporting in Chennai, India: Selected Articles by Rajeev Ravisankar Recently, I returned to Columbus, Ohio after completing a 10-month post-graduate diploma course at the Asian College of Journalism in Chennai (Madras), India. It began on July 14, 2007 and finished on May 3, 2008. The program was divided into three semesters, the first devoted mainly to lectures covering the fundamentals of journalism, political and social issues in India, as well as historical and legal aspects of media and core courses aimed at honing our media skills. As the year progressed, we focused more on our particular streams, in my case print journalism, which involved producing a student publication. This included a 24 page issue with content from the ‘covering deprivation’ component of the course. In the last semester we continued taking elective courses, produced a 24 page magazine and also worked on research papers and investigative projects. The space and choice provided by the college with regard to covering stories allowed me to engage with issues such as class, gender, caste, development, and more broadly the role of the state in communities, specifically those that are disadvantaged. Below, I have included some articles and project work that address these issues. It defines that the different religion have different culture. Religion is a matter of faith with individuals or communities. The state can have no religion of its own. They give equal treatment to the temple , church, and the mosque. The state is neutral treats all the religions equally. Religion is based on belief practise is to perform the religious beliefs , duties, rites, rituals and ideas prescribed by religious orders according their beliefs. Long time ago when only ruling on the everywhere Brahmins got the big place they got treatment at the above level . Religion is not defined in the constitution but it means that worship of rituals and beliefs. INTRODUCTION Freedom of religion article (25-28) . India is a secular state. State treats equally all religion. Religion has its own value in the Indians life. Freedom of religion means that different religions have their ways of worship and different spirituals and way of marriage in Hindus and Muslims. Hindus use Sanskrit language while worship in the temple. Muslims use Urdu language when they are reading Quran and Christian used to have read bible during the worship in the church. Every citizen of India have the freedom of adopting any religion according to their concern. Hindus who, when young, had from pressure become Musalmans, were allowed to go back to the faith of their fathers. No man should be interfered with on account of his religion, and every one should be allowed to change his religion, if he liked. -

Chapter Ten Hindu Nationalists and the Cold War Rahul Sagar It is generally accepted that during the Cold War divergences between “hope and reality” rendered India and America “estranged democracies.”1 Te pre- cise nature of the Indo- American relationship during these decades remains a subject of fruitful study. For instance, Rudra Chaudhuri has argued that the Cold War’s many crises actually prompted India and the United States to “forge” a more nuanced relationship than scholars have realized.2 Tis chapter does not join this discussion. It examines a diferent side of the story. Rather than study the workings of the Congress Party–afliated political and bureaucratic elite in power during the Cold War, it focuses on the principal Opposition—the ideas and policies of the Hindu Mahasabha, the Jan Sangh, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (bJP), which have championed the cause of Hindu nationalism. Te Cold War–era policies of these parties have not been studied carefully thus far. A common assumption is that these parties had little to say about international afairs or that, to the extent that they had something to say, their outlook was resolutely militant. Tis chapter corrects this misperception. It shows that these parties’ policies alternated between being attracted to and being repulsed by the West. Distaste for communism and commitment to democracy drove them to seek friendship with the West, while resentment at U.S. eforts to contain India as well as fears about ma- terialism and Westernization prompted them to demand that the West be kept at a safe distance. 229 false sTarTs Surprisingly little has been written about the diversity of Indian views on international relations in the Cold War era.
