  • Anime's Apocalypse: Neon Genesis Evangelion As Millennarian Mecha
Anime's Apocalypse: Neon Genesis Evangelion as Millennarian Mecha review essay by Mick Broderick Introduction: 1. From its startling opening credit sequence the 26-episode TV anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion (NGE), which first aired in October 1995 through to March 1996, foregrounds its overtly apocalyptic trajectory and postmodern form. For many the series remains at the zenith of Japanese television animation and it is unlikely to be surpassed any time soon due to its staggeringly complex detail and textuality; its allegory, characterisation and design. 2. Of interest here is how the program melds the sensibilities of post-war modern Japan with a post- holocaust, science fiction future.[1] It combines ideas/ideals of catastrophe, myth, mecha, agency, spectacle, kinesis, chaos and montage with a ubiquitous sense of imminence, solitude, quiescence, introspection, prophecy, teleology and predeterminism. 3. It is hardly credible to do justice to the Neon Genesis Evangelion project, designed to broadcast its cumulative ten-and-a-half hours of animation across a half-year of screen programming, in the few pages of analysis allotted here. Hence, my focus is on privileging some of the more enigmatic and subtextual lines of narrative which broach the series' concerns with the apocalyptic and its multifaceted, cross-cultural manifestations. Series Summary: 4. Neon Genesis Evangelion takes place, according to its creator, Anno Hideaki, along the following schema: The year: 2015 A world where, fifteen years before, over half the human population perished. A world that has been miraculously revived: its economy, the production, circulation, consumption of material goods, so that even the shelves of convenience stores are filled.

Jnl of Ecclesiastical History, Vol. , No. , July . © Cambridge University Press doi:./S How Useful are Episcopal Ordination Lists as a Source for Medieval English Monastic History? by DAVID E. THORNTON Bilkent University, Ankara E-mail: [email protected] This article evaluates ordination lists preserved in bishops’ registers from late medieval England as evidence for the monastic orders, with special reference to religious houses in the diocese of Worcester, from to . By comparing almost , ordination records collected from registers from Worcester and neighbouring dioceses with ‘conven- tual’ lists, it is concluded that over per cent of monks and canons are not named in the extant ordination lists. Over half of these omissions are arguably due to structural gaps in the surviving ordination lists, but other, non-structural factors may also have contributed. ith the dispersal and destruction of the archives of religious houses following their dissolution in the late s, many docu- W ments that would otherwise facilitate the prosopographical study of the monastic orders in late medieval England and Wales have been irre- trievably lost. • The Right to Privacy and the Future of Mass Surveillance’
‘The Right to Privacy and the Future of Mass Surveillance’ ABSTRACT This article considers the feasibility of the adoption by the Council of Europe Member States of a multilateral binding treaty, called the Intelligence Codex (the Codex), aimed at regulating the working methods of state intelligence agencies. The Codex is the result of deep concerns about mass surveillance practices conducted by the United States’ National Security Agency (NSA) and the United Kingdom Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ). The article explores the reasons for such a treaty. To that end, it identifies the discriminatory nature of the United States’ and the United Kingdom’s domestic legislation, pursuant to which foreign cyber surveillance programmes are operated, which reinforces the need to broaden the scope of extraterritorial application of the human rights treaties. Furthermore, it demonstrates that the US and UK foreign mass surveillance se practices interferes with the right to privacy of communications and cannot be justified under Article 17 ICCPR and Article 8 ECHR. As mass surveillance seems set to continue unabated, the article supports the calls from the Council of Europe to ban cyber espionage and mass untargeted cyber surveillance. The response to the proposal of a legally binding Intelligence Codexhard law solution to mass surveillance problem from the 47 Council of Europe governments has been so far muted, however a soft law option may be a viable way forward. Key Words: privacy, cyber surveillance, non-discrimination, Intelligence Codex, soft law. Introduction Peacetime espionage is by no means a new phenomenon in international relations.1 It has always been a prevalent method of gathering intelligence from afar, including through electronic means.2 However, foreign cyber surveillance on the scale revealed by Edward Snowden performed by the United States National Security Agency (NSA), the United Kingdom Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) and their Five Eyes partners3 1 Geoffrey B.

    3. BOROUGH WIDE ANALYSIS 3 BOROUGH WIDE ANALYSIS 3.1 TOPOGRAPHY 3.1.1 The topography of Lewisham has played a vital role in influencing the way in which the borough has developed. 3.1.2 The natural topography is principally defined by the valley of the Ravensbourne and Quaggy rivers which run north to south through the centre and join at Lewisham before flowing northwards to meet the Thames at Deptford. The north is characterised by the flat floodplain of the River Thames. 3.1.3 The topography rises on the eastern and western sides, the higher ground forming an essential Gently rising topography part of the borough's character. The highest point to the southwest of the borough is at Forest Hill (105m). The highest point to the southeast is Grove Park Cemetery (55m). Blackheath (45m) and Telegraph Hill (45m) are the highest points to the north. 3.1.4 The dramatic topography allows for elevated views from within the borough to both the city centre and its more rural hinterland. High points offer panoramas towards the city 42 Fig 18 Topography 2m 85m LEWISHAM CHARACTERISATION STUDY December 2018 43 3.2 GEOLOGY 3.2.1 The majority of the borough is underlain by the Thames Group rock type which consists mostly of the London Clay Formation. 3.2.2 To the north, the solid geology is Upper Chalk overlain by Thanet Sand. The overlying drift geology is gravel and alluvium. The alluvium has been deposited by the tidal flooding of the Thames and the River Ravensbourne. River deposits are also characteristic along the Ravensbourne.
