In issuing the present Supplement to our Catalogues of Gramophone Records, we add yet another famous name to the long list of musical celebrities who have recognised the wonderful perfection to which the Gramophone has attained. Madame Albani, the world-renowned Diva, while staying a short time ago at Truro, heard, to her astonishment, 'l'amagno's voice singing the " Morte d'Otello" in an adjoining room in her hotel. Filled with amazement she sent to the room in question and discovered that one of our representatives was entertaining some friends with his Gramophone. Madame Albani immediately requested him to bring the instrument to her salon, and our representative was not released until he had pjayed every one of the records he had with him, some of them twice over. The result was that Madame Albani visited the Gramophone Laboratory and made several records for us, two of which we now give to the world, only remarking in publishing them that Madame Albani has accorded the most unstinted praise to the Gramophone, and has expressed her entire satisfaction with our records of her voice. What further recommendation can he asked for? R.L. 3505 " Home, Sweet Home." R.L. 55325 "Ombra mai fu." (Handel's Largo.) He is an Artiste still in his prime ; he is crowned with honours, and there echoes in his ears the acclamation of every capital in Europe. Comm. Tamagno is devoted to art, and so jealous of his reputation that the most latish offers of operatic impressarios all over the world will not tempt him to sing except upon special occasions. for In order to make records of Comm. Tamagno's voice it was necessary the entire staff of our There latest laboratories to proceed to his Palace at San Remo on the Riviera. was erected our recording in his he in plant, especially built for the occasion. KUBELIK. It is quite certain that no immediately modem violinist has created so personal a sensation as Kubelik. In every country and nearly on every occasion of his appearances, he has conquered the severest and most exclusive of critics. His technique and execution are as near as may be perfect, and no better proof of that fact could be given than in the Records which we have been fortunate enough to persuade him to give us. One may mention the Sextette from "Lucia di Lammermoor" Record as a singular example of this young player's wonderful capacity for overcoming that which is extremely difficult with what maybe called the very innocence of facility. R.L. 7956 " Serenade," by llrdla. R.L. 7957 Sextette from "Lucia di Lammermoor," by St. Lubin. RED LABEL" GRAMOPHONERECORDS. Emma Calve ranks surely as one among the most amazing operatic Santuzza, her artists of her time. She is an incomparable vocal actress ; as Ophelia, it is infinitely voice is passionate, native, overwhelming : as pathetic ; as Carmen, it comes to you with a whirl of emotion ; and it is in this last part that she will probably be remembered as one remembers the singers of the eighteenth century, such as Minghotti or Faustina. The dramatic records of the Gramophone bring out in a peculiar way the element in her voice which has made h-r so rightly famous in the world of music. It is odd to think that Madame Suzanne Adams, who has become so extremely popular a singer and actress in these days, has only been before the public some eight years, hrr debut taking place at the Grand Opera, Paris, 1895. That was in the part of Juliette, but in many another part- such as Marguerite and Zerlina-she has also made for herself a consider- able name. She is above all a natural and pure singer, and these qualities are pointedly brought out in the records which we have been able to make of her artistry. "Air des Bijoux," from "Faust" (The Jewel Song), R.L. 3294 " Home, Sweet Home," by Sir H. Bishop. by Gounod. R.L. 3295 "Printemps Nouveau." R.L. 3292 " Coquette," by Leo Stern. Caruso is one of those men, the tribe of which seems to have been initiated by Lord Byron when he declared that one fine morning he awoke is to find himself famous. His conquest is a recent one, but there no he takes question that in s finely rugged and powerfully emotional part a place among modern tenors. He has been the object of much unique back laudation, partly owing to the fact, it may be, that he brought to be London the spirit of old Italian song, which had seemed to extinct. The records which he has made for us are there to prove the truth of these words. Verdi. A large body of published research exists regarding the physiology of breathing, the acoustics of singing, and solutions for specific vocal faults. There is similarly a growing body of research into the system of voice classification and repertoire assignment. This paper shall reexamine this research in light of baritenor voices. After establishing the general parameters of healthy vocal technique through appoggio, the various tenor, baritone, and bass Fächer will be studied to establish norms of vocal criteria such as range, timbre, tessitura, and registration for each Fach. The study of these Fächer includes examinations of the historical singers for whom the repertoire was created and how those roles are cast by opera companies in modern times. The specific examination of baritenors follows the same format by examining current and

  • 2012 Conference Abstracts (In Order of Presentation)
2012 Conference Abstracts (in order of presentation) Thursday afternoon Session 1a: Mapping Musical Modernities at the BBC (3rd Floor) Vaughan Williams, Boult and the BBC JENNY DOCTOR, SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY Much scholarly discussion in recent years has focused on re-mapping notions of biography, exploring in music not only composers, performers and librettists, but also patrons, concert organizers and programme builders. In parallel with this emerged new ideas of institutional biography, opening up questions that contextualized the institution in terms of its cultural role. With such expanded impressions of biography, identity and contribution in mind, I explore Ralph Vaughan Williams and the BBC, considering the composer’s broadcasting activities and opportunities in relation to his Corporation contacts, in particular his interactions with BBC Music Director and Chief Conductor Adrian Boult. “The Best Possible Performance”: The BBC’s 1942 Music Policy and the Problem of Swung Classics CHRISTINA BAADE, MCMASTER UNIVERSITY This paper examines the BBC’s 1942 ban on swung classics, locating it at the nexus of three strands of British cultural expression during the Second World War: 1. the vogue for Russian (and Soviet) culture; 2. the expansion of American-style popular music in Britain; and 3. the development of People’s War discourses of democracy, populism, and tolerance. This paper argues that the ban represented a direct attempt to combat the commoditization of music and to develop a more musical citizenry. The BBC’s adoption of repressive means for democratic aims demonstrated the challenges of music broadcasting in modern mass culture. “The Machine Stops” and the Musical Acousmêtre LOUIS NIEBUR, UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA, RENO In 1966, BBC Television broadcast an adaptation of E.M.

  • Overture Opera Guides
overture opera guides in association with We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with Overture Publishing on this series of opera guides and to build on the work English National Opera did over twenty years ago on the Calder Opera Guide Series. As well as reworking and updating existing titles, Overture and ENO have commissioned new titles for the series and all of the guides will be published to coincide with repertoire being staged by the company at the London Coliseum. We hope that these guides will prove an invaluable resource now and for years to come, and that by delving deeper into the history of an opera, the poetry of the libretto and the nuances of the score, read- ers’ understanding and appreciation of the opera and the art form in general will be enhanced. John Berry Artistic Director, ENO The publisher John Calder began the Opera Guides series under the editorship of the late Nicholas John in association with English National Opera in 1980. It ran until 1994 and eventu- ally included forty-eight titles, covering fifty-eight operas. The books in the series were intended to be companions to the works that make up the core of the operatic repertory. They contained articles, illustrations, musical examples and a complete libretto and singing translation of each opera in the series, as well as bibliographies and discographies. The aim of the present relaunched series is to make available again the guides already published in a redesigned format with new illustrations, some newly commissioned articles, updated reference sections and a literal translation of the libretto that will enable the reader to get closer to the intentions and meaning of the original.
