THE SOUTHERN SLAVS: LAND AND PEOPLE INTRODUCTORY NOTE THE Jugoslavs form part of the great Slav race, which is itself a branch of the Indo-Aryan race. They are divided into three main groups, the vVestern, Eastern, and Southern Slavs. The Western Slavs include the Poles, Czechs, Slovaks, and the Slavs in Germany (i.e. the Serbs of Upper and Lower Lusatia and the Cassoubs and Slovinci in West Prussia and Pome­ rania). The Eastern Slavs are the Russians, whose Southern branch goes by the name of Ruthenes in Galicia, Bukovina, and Hungary. The Southern Slavs or Jugoslavs (Jug= South in the Slav tongues) include the Bulgars, Serbo-Croats, and Slovenes. Setting aside the Bulgars, who, by their charac­ teristics and political aims, form. an entity apart, the Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes are one single nation known by three different names. In this and several other pamphlets we propose to deal only with these people, whom we will call "Jugoslavs." T.he Jugoslavs (i.e. the Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes) form the compact bulk of the present population of the Balkan Peninsula. A total of 136 species were recorded from 252 localities - 69 % of the Croatian butterfly fauna. Five of these from the literature have not been seen again. A full list of the species and localities is given in the appendices. Several species are of conservation interest in Europe - 6 are listed in the European Habitats Directive: Lycaena dispar (Haworth, 1802), Euphydryas aurinia (Rottemburg, 1775), Coenonympha oedippus (Fabricius, 1787), Zerynthia polyxena (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775), Phengaris arion (Linnaeus, 1758) and Lopinga achine (Scopoli, 1763). The habitat preferences of some rarer species are described. Changes in land-use in recent decades have resulted in the loss of meadows - important habitats for many species. The migration from Byzantium to the West due to the Ottoman conquest of the Byzantine Empire had an immense impact on promoting classical Greek culture, inherited by Byzantium. „Rediscovered” Greek culture affected the shaping of Humanistic thought, the content of Renaissance art and, indirectly, the formation of a new European iden- tity. The author examines the aforementioned historical phenomena from the perspective of Istria, particularly in the context of the Greek migrants who fled the Ottomans and arrived at the Istrian peninsula. Key words: Humanism and Renaissance, Byzantines, Greek language, Greeks, Istria Humanistic thought and Renaissance art were shaped under the strong influence of „rediscovered” classical civilization, particularly Greek literature, culture and philosophy.
