GOLDMAN*** Fraudulent and deceptive environmental claims in marketing (sometimes called “greenwashing”) are a persistent problem in the United States, despite nearly thirty years of efforts by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to prevent it. This Essay focuses on a recent trend in greenwashing—fraudulent “organic” claims for nonagricultural products, such as home goods and personal care products. We offer three recommendations. First, we suggest ways that the FTC can strengthen its oversight of “organic” claims for nonagricultural products and improve coordination with the USDA. Second, we argue for inclusion of guidelines for “organic” claims in the next revision of the FTC’s Guidelines for the Use of Environmental Marketing Claims (often referred to as the “Green Guides”), which the FTC is scheduled to revise in 2022. Finally, we assert that the FTC should formalize the Green Guides as binding regulations, rather than their current form as nonbinding interpretive guidance, as the USDA has done for the National Organic Program (NOP) regulations. This Essay concludes that more robust regulatory oversight of “organic” claims, together with efforts by the FTC to prevent other forms of greenwashing, will ultimately bolster demand for sustainable products and incentivize manufacturers to innovate to meet this demand. -

Vagabonding Slowly: Ecopedagogy, Metaphors, Figurations, and Nomadic Ethics Phillip G. Payne, Monash University, Australia Abstract Critical environmental education promised a reconstructive critique of any educa- tion that reconstituted social and ecological injustices. Post-critical inquiry in en- vironmental education research revitalizes that commitment. The “voices” of the researched and researcher are well represented in this empirical study of a radical curriculum praxis. The dark matter pursued in this study of an environmentally designed vagabonding curriculum and its slow ecopedagogy is the reconciliation of inner-social-outer “natures.” A related methodological challenge is to meta- phorically and figurationally represent the ecologies of somaesthetics, ethics, and ecopolitics, as they are lived creatively by the subjects of research, including the researcher. This post-critical case study adds to that literature which reflexively addresses various ontology-epistemology tensions and their methodological im- plications as they are interpreted from within the ecocentric paradigm. Résumé Le discours critique de l’éducation environnementale promettait une reconstruction critique de toute éducation qui reconstituait les injustices sociales et écologiques. Les études post-critiques dans la recherche en éducation à l’environnement revitalisent cet engagement. Les « voix » des participants et des chercheurs sont bien représentées dans cette étude empirique sur la praxis d’une approche curriculaire radicale. La matière noire poursuivie dans cette étude d’un curriculum centré sur l’environnement et une éco-pédagogie ambulatoire et lente, est la réconciliation de nos ‘natures’ intérieures, sociales et extérieures. Le défi méthodologique est de représenter métaphoriquement et figurativement les écologies soma-esthétiques, éthiques et politiques, qui sont vécues par les acteurs de la recherche, incluant le chercheur. -

Thus, stakeholders try to invest in green companies and projects; consumers prefer to buy eco-friendly products instead of traditional ones; and consumers and investors refuse to deal with unfair green companies. In this case, the companies should quickly adapt their strategy corresponding to the new trend of transformation from overconsumption to green consumption. This process leads to increasing the frequency of using greenwashing as an unfair marketing instrument to promote the company’s green achievements. Such companies’ behavior leads to a decrease in trust in the company’s green brand from the green investors. Thus, the aim of the study is to check the impact of greenwashing on companies’ green brand. -

ABSTRACT Title of Document: FOLLOWING THE TRAIL OF THE SNAKE: A LIFE HISTORY OF COBRA MANSA “COBRINHA” MESTRE OF CAPOEIRA Isabel Angulo, Doctor of Philosophy, 2008 Directed By: Dr. Jonathan Dueck Division of Musicology and Ethnomusicology, School of Music, University of Maryland Professor John Caughey American Studies Department, University of Maryland This dissertation is a cultural biography of Mestre Cobra Mansa, a mestre of the Afro-Brazilian martial art of capoeira angola. The intention of this work is to track Mestre Cobrinha’s life history and accomplishments from his beginning as an impoverished child in Rio to becoming a mestre of the tradition—its movements, music, history, ritual and philosophy. A highly skilled performer and researcher, he has become a cultural ambassador of the tradition in Brazil and abroad. Following the Trail of the Snake is an interdisciplinary work that integrates the research methods of ethnomusicology (oral history, interview, participant observation, musical and performance analysis and transcription) with a revised life history methodology to uncover the multiple cultures that inform the life of a mestre of capoeira. A reflexive auto-ethnography of the author opens a dialog between the experiences and developmental steps of both research partners’ lives. Written in the intersection of ethnomusicology, studies of capoeira, social studies and music education, the academic dissertation format is performed as a roda of capoeira aiming to be respectful of the original context of performance. The result is a provocative ethnographic narrative that includes visual texts from the performative aspects of the tradition (music and movement), aural transcriptions of Mestre Cobra Mansa’s storytelling and a myriad of writing techniques to accompany the reader in a multi-dimensional journey of multicultural understanding. -
