Arto O. Salonen Kestävä kehitys globaalin ajan hyvinvointiyhteiskunnan haasteena ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. Tiivistelmä Tässä väitöstutkimuksessa tarkastelun kohteena on ihmisen arkinen toiminta suomalaisessa kulttuurisessa kehyksessä globaalissa ajassa. Kansalaisjärjestöjen merkitys on huomattava ihmisten väliseen globaalivastuuseen kasvamisessa. Ihmiskeskeisyys voi kuitenkin estää kestä- vän kehityksen kokonaisvaltaista toteutumista. Planetaarinen vastuu edustaa ihmisten välistä globaalivastuuta laajempaa eettisen huolenpidon piiriä kattaen inhimillisen ja ei-inhimillisen todellisuuden luoden edellytykset monimuotoisen elämän säilymiselle planeetallamme. Päättä- jien vastuu korostuu, sillä kestävän kehityksen mukaisten tuotteiden ja palvelujen korkeat kus- tannukset muodostavat merkittävimmän esteen kestävän kehityksen mukaisten elämäntyylien rakentumiselle. Kestävän kehityksen periaatteiden mukaiseen yhteiskuntaan siirtymistä nopeut- taisivat sellaiset ohjauskeinot, joiden avulla kestävän kehityksen mukaiset arkiset valinnat olisi- vat kansalaisille kustannuksiltaan edullisin vaihtoehto. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. Arto O. Salonen Sustainable development and its promotion in a welfare society in a global age …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. Abstract The objective of the dissertation was to determine the concept of sustainable development according to current understanding and to analyze the structuration of sustainable daily life and how it varies between different groups. The present dissertation is both a literature-based theoretical study and data-based empirical research. The theoretical framework of the study was a greated model of the Structuration of Sustainability in Everyday Life. The model is based on a synthesis of Giddens Theory of Structuration (1984), Spaargaren & van Vliet's Theory of Consumption as Social Practices (2000) and principles of sustainable development. According to the model created, sustainable everyday life is generated in a context of internal and external factors compromising the interests of ecosystems, society and business. The literature used in the thesis included international and national statements on sustainable development and research into sustainability and the transition to sustainable societies. The data were collected at Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. The discretionary sample consisted of students of social services (n = 210) and were collected using the semantic differential technique. The data were analyzed using quantitative and qualitative methods. The results showed that the value placed on ecological, economic and social sustainability increased with age. Activity in non governmental organizations was associated with the acceptance of sustainable development as a whole and especially with global responsibility. Women's everyday life promoted sustainability more than men´s. People living in Helsinki had more sustainable ways of living than those living in the surrounding municipalities because of greater recycling and the low importance given to ownership. Prefering vegetarian food turned out to be a real opportunity for a more sustainable way of living because there were few barriers identified. Contradictory human behavior occurred when advanced sustainable consumer were ready to risk their health. The importance of communality was high and it was considered an aspect of health. The most significant obstacles to sustainable development in daily life were high costs, lack of knowledge and busyness. Similar attitudes towards sustainable development translate into different people´s behavior, which indicates complexities of the behaviour change in the context of sustainable development. The role of non governmental organizations is significant in increasing global responsibility. Education presents an opportunity to increase sustainability, but there are challenges to face from system thinking and in understanding entities in a state of transition towards sustainable everyday life. The responsibility of policy makers is paramount because high costs create a barrier to a sustainable way of living. The implementation of the concept of sustainable development should be focused on the planetary ethics which cover humans, animals, plants and ecosystems. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… Keywords: Sustainable development, sustainable thinking, behaviour change Esipuhe Traditionaalisten yhteiskuntien kehittyminen kohti massakulutusyhteiskuntia on ollut il- meistä viime vuosikymmeninä kaikkialla maailmassa. Helsinkiläisen arjessa on läsnä suunnitelmallisuus, missä kalenterimerkinnät siivittä- vät ihmistä suorituksesta toiseen. Seurauk- sena on materiaalisesta näkökulmasta tarkasteltuna tehottomuutta, sillä ihmisen energia suuntautuu ensisijaisesti vuorovaikutukseen ja ihmisten välisten suhteiden rakentamiseen eikä bruttokansantuotteen kasvua tukeviin suorituksiin.

• The Earth Charter Through the Lenses of Sustainability Justice O Kαταστατικός Χάρτης Της Γης Μέσα Α
9th International Conference in Open & Distance Learning - November 2017, Athens, Greece - PROCEEDINGS The Earth Charter through the Lenses of Sustainability Justice O Kαταστατικός Χάρτης της Γης μέσα από την Οπτική της Βιώσιμης Δικαιοσύνης Nelly Kostoulas-Makrakis Associate Professor of Teaching Methodology and Education for Sustainable Development Dept. of Primary Education University of Crete, Greece [email protected] Abstract The Earth Charter, the product of a worldwide, decade long, cross-cultural dialogue on common goals and shared values, is a vision and declaration of fundamental ethical principles for building a just, sustainable and peaceful global society in the 21st century. For almost two decades, the Earth Charter initiative has evolved to set forth fundamental principles for a sustainable way of life in an inclusive way. This paper attempts to connect the Earth Charter with the notion of sustainability justice. It has been found that all the four dimensions of sustainability justice, namely: social justice, environmental justice, economic justice and cultural justice are reflected upon the whole Earth Charter document and are related with its underlying vision.

Rev. 4/25/11 “Earth Charter Ethics and Finding Meaning in an Evolving Universe” Steven C. Rockefeller Yale University 24 – 26 March 2011 At the outset I would like to extend my personal congratulations to Mary Evelyn Tucker, John Grim and Brian Swimme on “The Journey of the Universe” film and book, which will become a deeply inspiring educational resource in support of the transition to a sustainable future. All of us associated with the Earth Charter Initiative are profoundly grateful to Mary Evelyn for her extraordinary leadership in support of the drafting and promotion of the Earth Charter. As a member of the drafting committee, Mary Evelyn played an especially important role in helping to craft language for the Preamble that sets the Earth Charter’s ethical vision in the context of an evolving universe. Further, she has always seen the need for a new global ethic as one important implication of the Universe Story as it relates to humanity’s role as a member of the community of life on Earth. Eric Chaisson, who with Mary Evelyn was part of the first Earth Charter drafting committee meeting in January 1997, also shares this outlook and his views had an important influence on the language that is used in the Preamble. I also would like to recognize that in addition to Mary Evelyn and Eric a number of you attending this conference contributed to the drafting process and have supported and used the Earth Charter in many different ways, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you.

  • Manifesto the Earth Charter Preamble
THE EARTH CHARTER CITIES MANIFESTO THE EARTH CHARTER PREAMBLE We stand at a critical moment in Earth’s history, a time when humanity must choose its future. As the world becomes increasingly interdependent and fragile, the future at once holds great peril and great promise. To move forward, we must recognize that in the midst of a magnificent diversity of cultures and life forms we are one human family and one Earth community with a common destiny.
