First record and description of Panulirus pascuensis (Reed, 1954) first stage phyllosoma in the plankton of Rapa Nui By Meerhoff Erika*, Mujica Armando, García Michel, and Nava María Luisa Abstract Among the most striking crustaceans from Rapa Nui Island (27° S, 109°22’ W) is the endemic lobster Panulirus pascuensis, commonly known as the spiny lobster. This species is also present in Pitcairn Island and the Salas y Gomez ridge. The larvae of this species pass through different phyllosoma stages until metamorphosis, in which they molt to puerulus, a transitional stage adapted to benthic life. This species is an important fishery resource for the inhabitants of Rapa Nui. However, there are several gaps in the biological knowledge of this species, including its ontogeny. We sampled zooplankton to obtain first stage P. pascuensis phyllosoma during three oceanographic campaigns around Rapa Nui (April 2015, September 2015 and March 2016), individuals were encountered between the surface and 200 m depth with an abundance of 1.3 indiv/1000 m3. These individuals, along with laboratory hatched phyllosoma, allowed us to describe the morphology of this larval stage. The Chilean oceanic islands are located in the southeastern Pacific Ocean and include Easter Island, Salas y Gómez Island, Desventuradas Islands (San Félix Island and San Ambrosio Island), and the Juan Fernández Archipelago. They are of volcanic origin and are the emerged peaks of seamounts that form part of the Salas y Gómez and Nazca ranges that rise up from the Nazca tectonic plate. The islands are at a great distance from each other and from the South American continent, and their surrounding areas have depths around 4000 m to the ocean floor. The objective of this study is to update stomatopods and decapods records from these islands, from their surrounding waters and from the seamount ranges of which they are part of. Given that there is little information on some of these sites, and the records are disperse, a literature review is carried out, analysing different sources including both published reports and reports with limited circulation. To date, three families of Stomatopoda with five species and 57 families of Decapoda with 194 species have been recorded. -

(USNM), with the object to revise this family of Crustacea. The studied material, in which most of the known species are represented, clearly showed the necessity of such a revision, and at the same time offered the materials for it. -

Diagnostic characters: Carapace rounded and spiny, with branchiostegal areas slightly inflated; rostrum absent; anterior margin armed with 4 large and regularly spaced large spines other than frontal horns; height of frontal horns about 2 times the eye height; median area behind frontal horns with a longitudinal row of spinules. Antennules with flagella longer than peduncle; antennular plate at bases of antennae armed with 4 close-set principal spines (posterior pair larger).First 4 pairs of legs without pincers. Abdominal segments with a transverse groove, not continuous with pleural groove; anterior margins of pleura spinous. Posterior half of tail fan soft and flexible. Colour: body dark blue and brown; males usually darker than females. Eyes black. Tips of large spines on carapace yellowish. Antennular peduncle striped with white lines, flagella uniformly brownish; membranous areas at outer base of antenna light blue. Legs conspicuously striped with white lines. Abdomen with tiny pale dots. Pleopods and soft part of tail fan black. Size: Maximum body length 40 cm, commonly between 20 and 30 cm (males usually larger). Habitat, biology, and fisheries: Found in shallow waters, usually at depths from 1 to 4 m (maximum depth 16 m) at seaward edges of reefs, in clear waters not influenced by rivers. Nocturnal and usually not gregarious, but sometimes occurs in a “harem” of mixed sexes; often found in deep caves during the daytime and strongly clinging to rocks at surf zones or areas with strong currents such as surge channels.
