The Sound of the Suburbs: A Case Study of Three Garage Bands in San Jose, California During the 1960s by Paul Kauppila INTRODUCTION/THE BEATLES The recent spate of articles, television specials, radio shows, and other observations of the fortieth anniversary of the Beatles' appearance on the Ed Sullivan show attest to that moment's lasting significance in the history of popular music and popular culture. In an increasingly fragmented era of media consumption through multiple technological avenues, most prominently cable and pay television and the Internet, it is sometimes difficult to imagine the profound effect that a single television program could have in the year 1964. The tremendous popularity of the Beatles, coupled with an expanding and increasingly affluent middle class, led to an explosion of bands playing music in a style that eventually came to be known as "garage rock", although that term did not come into common usage until several years later. -

Barton collection of Northwest sound recordings Dates 1950-2000 (inclusive) 1950 2000 Quantity approximately 11,100 items, (over 6000 audio reels, 3000 documents, 1000 audiocassettes, 500 compact discs, and 600 phonograph records) Collection Number 2010012 Summary The Kearney W. Barton collection of Northwest sound recordings primarily consists of original recordings engineered and/or produced by Barton at Audio Recording, Inc., his own recording studio, which operated out of various locations in Seattle, Washington from 1961 through the late 2000s. The bulk of the collection is comprised of music recordings, but also contains a smaller percentage of spoken word recordings, as well as radio advertisements (many of which also incorporate music). Specific audio formats represented in the collection include: open reel analog tape, compact cassettes, analog sound discs (7 inch, 10 inch, 12 inch, and 16 inch), magnetic wire records, and compact discs. The collection also contains a small amount of manuscript material, which mainly consists of technical notes that were found with some recordings and very limited correspondence (chiefly from lawyers). In some instances, notes included on original containers also have been preserved when material has been rehoused. Abstract When Nirvana found sudden commercial success with the song “Smells Like Teen Spirit” in 1991, the music industry’s attention became focused on Seattle for the first time. The city, however, had a rich musical tradition going back decades. This thesis examines the rise and fall of music communities in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest from the 1950s to the 1990s: the jazz mileu in Seattle in the 1950s, the Pacific Northwest garage rock network of the 1960s, and the alternative music community of the 1980s and early 1990s. -

Galehouse saw the independent record business grow from a cottage industry to a powerhouse on the back of rock ‘n’ roll music. He participated in this growth through his Shelley Products pressing plant, servicing many national labels. Through Golden Crest and other labels, he released a wide range of music from rock ‘n’ roll and rhythm & blues to the classics; artists included veteran jazz violinist Joe Venuti, composer Alec Wilder and rock ‘n’ rollers the Wailers. Galehouse also recorded many college bands throughout the country. As a musician, plastics expert, recording engineer and educator he put his talents to full use in the Shelley Products and Golden Crest businesses. Operating from 1956 through 1984 and based in Huntington Station, it flirted with national influence through hit records by the Wailers in 1959 and 1964, and released a broad spectrum of American music from rock ‘n’ roll, doo wop, teen and R&B to the classics, chamber music and jazz.
