Barton collection of Northwest sound recordings Dates 1950-2000 (inclusive) 1950 2000 Quantity approximately 11,100 items, (over 6000 audio reels, 3000 documents, 1000 audiocassettes, 500 compact discs, and 600 phonograph records) Collection Number 2010012 Summary The Kearney W. Barton collection of Northwest sound recordings primarily consists of original recordings engineered and/or produced by Barton at Audio Recording, Inc., his own recording studio, which operated out of various locations in Seattle, Washington from 1961 through the late 2000s. The bulk of the collection is comprised of music recordings, but also contains a smaller percentage of spoken word recordings, as well as radio advertisements (many of which also incorporate music). Specific audio formats represented in the collection include: open reel analog tape, compact cassettes, analog sound discs (7 inch, 10 inch, 12 inch, and 16 inch), magnetic wire records, and compact discs. The collection also contains a small amount of manuscript material, which mainly consists of technical notes that were found with some recordings and very limited correspondence (chiefly from lawyers). In some instances, notes included on original containers also have been preserved when material has been rehoused. Barton collection of Northwest sound 1 recordings, 1950-2000 http://archiveswest.orbiscascade.org/ark:/80444/xv40075 Seattle recording engineer and producer, Kearney W. Barton (1931-2012), is often credited with helping to shape the garage rock inflected "original Northwest sound" that first developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s, but which would have a lasting influence on future generations of musicians and bands. Although primarily associated with rock and roll, Barton recorded music spanning a wide range of genres, including opera, jazz, folk, bluegrass, classical, cabaret, and gospel. He also created spoken word and other non-musical recordings, producing radio spots for many local businesses, such as Alaska Airlines, Nordstrom, and the Seattle SuperSonics. Content Description Collection includes thousands of sound recordings, both published and unpublished, on a variety of formats: 1/4 open reel tape, 1/2 open reel tape, grooved discs (shellac, aluminum, acetate, and vinyl), compact disc, compact cassette, wire, eight-track tape, etc. A wide range of musical styles and genres are represented, including classical, jazz, opera, rock, bluegrass, hindustani, a cappella, marching band. No matter which CSJ you meet, anywhere in the world, you are brought into a spirit of hospitality, love and communion. In those moments, you are the "dear neighbor." This was especially evident at the beginning of November, when four administrators, including myself, had the incredible opportunity to connect with over 20 high schools sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph. We traveled to Boston from all over the Events Calendar world, including Puerto Rico, Japan and France. In preparation for the coming year, I was searching for a prayer and came January 9: Second Semester Begins across one written by Sister Joanne Gallagher, CSJ, who we had the privilege of spending time with at the high school conference. January 11: Coffee With Counselors 8:00 am | Early Dismissal 12:45 pm May we move into this new year with the zeal of Jesus, a zeal marked by generous courage and humble self­emptying love, January 13: No School (Faculty/Staff Work the fidelity of Mary who was filled to overflowing with every kind of grace, Day) and the cordial charity of Joseph whose service was grounded in relationship with God and neighbor without distinction.
