Alphabet Knowledge: Introduce Aa and review Nn, Rr, Ll, Mm, Ss, Tt Phonological Awareness: Manipulates and blends sounds (phonemes). Print Concepts: Understands that letters form words and words are separated by spaces in print. Writing: Draws pictures and copies letters and/or numbers to communicate.

Standards CLL5 The child will acquire meaning from a variety of materials read to him/her. CLL6 The child will develop early phonological awareness (awareness of the units of sound). CLL7 The child will demonstrate increasing knowledge of the alphabet. CLL8 The child will demonstrate awareness of print concepts.

What is an emergent reader? When reading with an emergent reader: ✓ Knows some letters of the alphabet ✓ Model finger-point reading. Morning Meeting Theme: Winter Celebrations Around the Activities that take place during Morning Meeting: World ▪ Gather and Greet ▪ Message Board ▪ Alphabet Knowledge ▪ Class Schedule This week we are learning about winter celebrations around the world. We will focus on Diwali, Los Posadas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, and Christmas. After winter break, we will learn about ’s traditions in the United States, the , and . One day will be spent talking about each holiday. We will be learning about how people celebrate the holidays rather than the religious aspects. Please take time to discuss your family’s traditions! You can explain WHY you do things a certain way, how you do things, and more. It’s a great time to discuss your family’s beliefs as well. The goal of this unit is to help our students understand each other and people around the world! We will focus much more on our similarities than our differences. If you would like to spend more time discussing the holidays, there are many additional resources available online. Phonological Awareness What is the purpose of phoneme How do you begin teaching phoneme blending? blending, segmenting, and Blending individual phonemes should start with words that have 2 sounds manipulation? First we’ll say and do all the steps together. Say and do each step with your child. Now I will say and do the first two steps with you, and you will say and do the third step on your own. Each time you repeat the steps, have your child say and do one more step on his or her own. Math What are 3D Shapes? Shapes that 'pops out' at you. More specifically, 3-dimensional shapes are not flat. They take up space with how wide they are, how high or long they are, and how deep they are from front to back.

A pencil, ice cube, and ball are all examples of 3-dimensional shapes. For example, you can wrap your fingers around the shape of a pencil in order to draw, and you can hold an ice cube and a ball too. A true 3-D shape can't be flattened.

Parent Tips Students should be given an opportunity to literally get their hands around familiar three dimensional forms to best see and understand the difference between 2D and 3D shapes. Anything that’s not flat has a 3D shape. Below are some examples of 3D shapes. Cylinders: Cans, candles, some tumblers, coins Spheres: Oranges, gumballs, some grapes Cubes: some boxes, standard dice, (NOT most ice cubes. A standard ice cube is actually a shape called a frustum) Cones: some water fountain cups, some ice cream cones Rectangular prisms: most boxes, ice cream sandwiches, a microwave, some blocks of cheese, a stick of butter, a ream of paper, a deck of card

You’ve been learning how to check in with your body and calm down when you have strong feelings.

Show the angry photo. Ask child what they see, what is happening, and how the child in the picture feels. Point out the story elements. This is Kenny. He was playing with his favorite toy, but another boy grabbed it from him. He is angry.

Everybody gets angry sometimes. Doing hurtful things when you’re mad—like hitting, kicking, pushing, or calling people names—is not okay.

When Kenny is angry, his face feels hot, his heart beats fast, and the muscles in his arms feel tight, or tense.

1. Pretend you are mad. Show me what your face and body look like when you’re angry. Give child time to show their anger. Focus attention on your body. Where you feel tight in your body? Show the calm photo. Point out the story elements.

When Kenny has a strong feeling of anger, he remembers to calm down. Let’s practice the Calming-Down Steps. Review the How to Calm Down Poster.

Kenny calms down and tells the boy it’s not okay to grab toys. Kenny begins to feel better and finds a different toy that he likes.

You learned about how your body feels when you’re angry. Calming down when you feel mad is important so you don’t act in ways that hurt other people. Math Introduce Rectangular Prism Materials: 3D Shape Song page 2, Rectangular Prism page, objects shaped like a rectangular prism (Cereal box, book, Lego, domino). Do you remember what 3D (solid) shape we learned about yesterday? (Cylinder) Say the 3D Shapes Chant. Today we will learn more about a new solid. Point to the box. You call this a box. I call this a rectangular prism. Have child repeat the name. Explain that rectangular prisms can stack and slide but not roll. Sing the Rectangular Prism Song. Long & Short A Sound Cards Initial Sound Cards Letters and sounds are being introduced simultaneously. The learning bundle includes pat- tern block letter builder cards and cards with pictures that begin with the initial sound, these are the Initial Sound Cards. For the first activity, the cards are used to sort objects that begin with the target sound and objects that do not begin with the target sound. It is recommended that you use previous weeks’ cards with the new ones from each bundle. When each letter is introduced, use no more than 6 cards total with at least 3 containing the target sound. As your child becomes more familiar with the target sound, begin add- ing more cards.

Other ways to use the cards include:

Celebrating Los Posadas Los Posadas is celebrated in cities and towns across Mexico. From December 16th to , children often perform the “Posada” . Posada is Spanish for Inn or Lodging. In each Posada, children go to houses of friends and neighbors and sing a song at each home. The song they sing is asking for a room in the house. The children are told there is no room in the house and they go away.

3

Eventually they are told there is room and welcomed in. When the children go into the house they say thanks and have a party with food, games and fireworks. One game often played at Posada parties is piñata. A piñata is a decorated clay or paper‐mâché jar filled with sweets and hung from the ceiling or tree branch. The piñata is often decorated like a ball with seven peaks around it. To play the game, children are blind‐folded and take turns hitting the piñata with a stick until it splits open and sweets pour out. The children rush to pick up as many sweets as they can!
