This study explores the ways in which the Hip-hop movement is producing social change in Medellín, Colombia. Looking specifically at a Hip-hop school called Cuatro Elementos Skuela, which exists autonomously and with very little state support in the Medellín neighborhood of Aranjuez, I argue that young people are contributing to the reconstruction of the city’s social, cultural and economic fabric. I start by explaining the historical context of Medellín, describing the different sets of conflicts that unleashed high levels of violence and caused the fragmentation of the social, cultural and economic fabric. Moreover, I review the role of the government and its advances in cultural policy, identifying some gaps in state action. The study then presents a brief history of the Hip- hop movement, and its transformative elements. It compares the context of Medellín in the 1990’s with the Hip-hop movement in the South Bronx of New York in the 1970s, showing similarities in the conditions faced by urban youth. Finally, through different theories of social change, including theories about identity and culture, participatory communications and art, and culture and peace-making, the study shows how a group of young people are supporting themselves with creativity and entrepreneurial spirit, offering other young boys and girls in marginalized neighborhoods an alternative and healthy way to spend their free time and to acquire skills to become professional street artists; and helping to restore the city’s social fabric by offering cultural and meeting spaces to the community.! ! iii! ! Bunting-Hudson How do rap artists in Bogota, Colombia come together to make music? What is the process they take to commodify their culture? Why are some rappers able to become socially mobile in this process, while others are less so? What is technology’s role in all of this? This ethnography explores those questions, as it carefully documents the strategies utilized by various rap groups in Bogota, Colombia to create social mobility, commoditize products and to create a different vision of modernity within the hip-hop community, as an alternative to the ideals set forth by mainstream Colombian society. Resistance Art Poetry (RAP), is said to have originated in the United States but has become a form of international music. In conducting ethnographic research from December of 2012 to October 2014, I was able to discover how rappers organize themselves politically, how they commoditize their products and distribute them to create various types of social mobilities. In this dissertation, I constructed models to typologize rap groups in Bogota, Colombia, which I call polities of rappers to discuss how these groups come together, take shape, make plans and execute them to reach their business goals.

    Cape Verde and Brazil Musical Connections Juliana Braz Dias Universidade de Brasília / University of Pretoria Introduction The insertion of Brazilian music in contexts outside of the country is no lon- ger a novelty. Indeed, the media often reports on these musical flows. For instance, newspapers and specialized magazines have played a crucial role in highlighting the presence of Brazil on the international stage through reports on Grammy Awards won by Brazilian musicians (namely, Sérgio Mendes, Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso e João Gilberto). Another example is the increased visibility of concerts featuring Brazilian artists in other countries, such as the Brazilian Day in New York, which attracts more than a million people to the streets of that city – above all Brazilians, but also North-Americans and migrants from other countries. However, it should be noted that the presence of Brazilian music outside of the country’s borders is not necessarily related to the global cultural indus- try, neither to the impact of recent migration processes. Musical exchanges involving Brazilian musicians have been going on for some time, in multiple ways, following diverse routes and movements of people. In this article, I focus on a particular trajectory that some forms of Brazilian music have taken. I refer to the Atlantic flows that allowed for the arrival of music and musicians from Brazil to Cape Verde, deeply influencing musical productions in the archipelago. Adopting an anthropological ap- proach, I seek to engage with discourses articulated by Cape Verdeans on the role of “Brazilian music” (as they understand it) and its relationship to the music produced in Cape Verde.

A variety of wide-ranging, high potential plays have led to a dramatic surge in Angola's oil production. A decade ago, Angola was producing approximately 750,000 bopd (barrels of oil per day) and now production of almost 2.0 million bopd has been achieved. In the late 1700's Portuguese colonialists discovered oil seeps and asphalt deposits at Libongos, about 60 km north of Luanda and shipped some of the oil to Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro to be used as a caulking material to prevent water leakage into their ships. First-ever drilling for oil was in 1915 about 40 km northeast of Luanda. Dande-4 drilled in 1916 was tested at 6 bopd and was subsequently abandoned but it signified the first flow of oil in Angola. In 1956 the Benfica oil field, near Luanda, went on production representing the beginning of oil production in Angola. The first offshore oil field in Angola, Malongo, was discovered in 1968 in the Angola province of Cabinda by the American company, Gulf Oil. In 1996 Elf Petroleum discovered the Girassol oil field on Block 17 in 1,300 meters of water about 140 kilometers off the coast of Angola.

Pemberton created a distinctive flavored syrup that, when mixed with carbonated water, became what most people know today as “Coca-Cola.” Fast forward to today, The Coca-Cola Company is currently the world’s largest, non-alcoholic beverage producer, bringing in over $31 billion in net operating revenues in 2018 (Coca-Cola History, 2019). Besides being the largest producer of soft drinks, Coca-Cola has a few other strengths. First, Coca-Cola has a solid brand identity, meaning its logo and name are well known around the world in over 200 countries. Moreover, the company is known for producing not only its main product, but it is well known to produce a wide variety of non-alcoholic beverages. Coca-Cola also has a high retention of its customer base because, while there are alternatives to Coca-Cola, there is no other alternative that tastes exactly the same as a traditional Coca-Cola. Besides having and acknowledging strengths, The Coca-Cola Company does have its weaknesses. While the company excels in producing beverages across all of its product lines, that is the only type of product it produces. This is a drawback for Coca-Cola, as it limits the company's potential growth and leaves a way for competitors, like PepsiCo (sometimes referred to as Pepsi) who owns the Lay’s Potato Chip company, to expand into different markets.

Using the work of Edward Said in his text, Orientalism, and research on racial triangulation by Asian Americanist Claire Jean Kim, my work attempts to clarify the often-conflicted relations and dynamics between South Asians, Blacks, and whites. Chapter two of this dissertation looks at romantic and sexual involvement between different racial communities; I specifically look at the films Mississippi Masala and Bhaji on the Beach to delve into the cultural rarity that is the Black-South Asian romance. Chapter three discusses Black Orientalism in American hip hop videos by such artists as Truth Hurts, and Timbaland and Magoo. Aesthetic Citizenship: Popular Culture, Migrant Youth, and the Making of 'World Class' Delhi Abstract Delhi has nearly doubled in population since the early 1990s due to in-migration (censusindia.gov, 2011). These migrants, like migrants around the world, strive to adapt to their new surroundings by producing themselves in ways which make them socially, economically, and politically viable. My project examines how recent international and intranational immigrant youth who have come to Delhi to partake in its economic possibilities and, in some cases, to escape political uncertainty, are utilizing globally circulating popular cultural forms to make themselves visible in a moment when the city strives to recast its image as a world class destination for roaming capital (Roy, 2011). I focus on two super diverse settlement communities in South Delhi to explore the citizenship making claims of immigrant youth who, to date, have been virtually invisible in academic and popular narratives of the city. Specifically, I follow three groups of ethnically diverse migrant youth from these two settlement communities as they engage with hip hop, a popular cultural form originating in Black American communities in the 1970s (Chang, 2006; Morgan, 2009; Rose, 1994).

    FACTORIES IN THE FIELD: Rural Transformation and the Organization of Work in Mozambique’s Cashew Triangle Brad Paul, Ph.D. Prepared for TechnoServe July 10, 2008 1 Foreword “The place for the factory is by the side of the farm.” Manufacturers’ Record, July 3, 1913 In 1979, João Mucusete Sekare inherited 120 cashew trees, and when he retired from teaching at a nearby mission school and returned home to Namaponda he began planting more trees every year. That was in 1993, and by 2008 he owned 2,500 trees in production and employed three farm laborers in addition to his own working family of eight. João now has 30 times the average number of trees owned by the more than 940,000 families that produce cashews in rural Mozambique.1 His approach has been simple: “There is always a market for cashew nuts in Namaponda, so I decided to plant more trees every year,” he explains.2 Almeida Dos Santos walks 1.3 miles every day to the Miranda Industrial cashew factory in Mogincual, where he works in the cutting room. From 6 in the morning until 2 in the afternoon, he operates a foot-pedal-powered machine that splits the shell in preparation for eventual drying, peeling, and grading. This paper analyzes rap music as a medium and power to convey socio-cultural values, truth of conspiracy, and interests among youngsters. Both singers have portrayed the mainstream culture, faith, and patriotism, which have shaped people’s minds and behaviours. Rap songs have become so popular among young people who have always been informed by specific phenomenal interests. It has touched the consciousness that shapes the relationship between humans and culture. The road to these rap songs speaks the voice of cultural roots via its elements. To add, rap singers display popular means of conveying cultural intimacy through their music and of introducing a phenomenal symbol of society. However, Nepali Hip-hop redefines a relative degree of social conspiracy rather, it promotes positivity among the youngsters as it motivates and generates energy.
