November 2013 Minutes 4 The Steves Homestead is a three story limestone mansion built in 1876 for Edward Steves, owner of Steves Lumber Company. Although it is not handicapped accessible Change-A-Life 4 on the upper levels, there is plenty to see and hear about on the first floor. In 1952, FYI “For Your Information” 5 the home was donated to the Conversation Society. I toured the house in November, and it was an informative and enjoyable journey back in time. Page 6 Beta Tau Dialogue News From Jerrie Dooley – Area 6 Coordinator

Joanne Davis, immediate TSO past president, had colon surgery at the beginning of December. Please keep positive thoughts and remember Joanne and her family in your prayers. If you would like to send her messages and get well wishes, her email is [email protected].

We lost a very special member this week, Helen Weiss. She passed away at age 92. She was a faithful DKG member for 65 years (!) in the Alpha Theta and Beta Zeta chapters. I am sending this to all the chapters in Area 6 because you likely have a member or know a teacher who earned her education degree at Texas Lutheran College (now University) between 1948 and 1988 when Helen was a professor and advisor at TLU. I know her former students would like to know that she lived a long life and touched so many young educators at TLU and that she stayed active in DKG for so many years. She is such an inspiration. Helen never married, but her work touched many, many students. DKG is her family, and we will honor her in a ceremony in January.

Celebrating her 90th birthday on February 4, 2011, Helen Weiss got a big hug from Tammy Vitek, who was then the president of Beta Zeta and a former student of Helen’s at Texas Lutheran College. Helen was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma for 65 years. She passed away on December 27, 2013, in Fredericksburg, TX.

It’s time to dust off the chapter rules and do a little amending or revising. My chapter started the process last summer and found that our rules were last amended over 20 years ago and contained many outdated or irrelevant items. So our Legislation/Chapter Rules Committee decided to do a complete revision. The process definitely takes time. We have met a number of times and don’t have our final draft yet. However, we decided that we wanted to do it right and have a document that will stand the test of time. Technically, you have until April of 2015 to get this done, but the sooner, the better.

State membership chairman, Cathy Criner, is requesting a list of members who have been in DKG for 50 years or more and a list of members under the age of 40. Some of these under 40 members will be asked to be on a panel to talk about recruiting younger members.
