The shocking death of Princess Diana in 1997 brought a great deal of attention to bear on Great Britain’s royal family—much of it negative. Many complaints came forward about the Civil List, the sum granted by Parliament to meet the House of Windsor’s official expenses—which was “set at £8.9 million a year, but other royal income, including the Queen’s travel allowance, raises the cost to the taxpayer to about £50 million a year” (The Telegraph, Sept. 14, 1997). Also at issue has been the degree of public access to royal palaces. Of course, the events of Sept. 11, 2001, have done much to silence such concerns. But there is still discontent over the level of communication between the royal family and the British people. Prime Minister Tony Blair has advocated the monarchy paying for itself. But that’s a far cry from the reform sought by many in his party, who want a republic. In 1997, the British Telegraph explained that “many of his Cabinet colleagues have previously made controversial comments about the Royal Family, including Ron Davies, the Welsh Secretary, who said Prince Charles was not fit to be king, and John Prescott, the Deputy Prime Minister, who has declared himself to be in favour of abolishing the monarchy.” The same newspaper cited another source as saying that “the logic of New Labour—especially the abolition of hereditary peers—could lead even Blair supporters to call for the scrapping of the monarchy.” The Sunday Times of London, reporting on a survey it conducted with a major British polling firm, said that “the royals must modernise to survive—a majority (58%) do not believe the monarchy will exist in its present form in 30 years’ time” (Sept.

    1 Fifth International Conference on the Ancient Novel Houston, Texas September 30–October 4, 2015 Abstracts Adkins, Evelyn Discourse and Power: Lucius and Milo in Apuleius’ Metamorphoses Speech, gesture, and other types of discourse such as silence and written text are tools of self- presentation as well as media for negotiating social relationships of status and power. In this paper, I examine the mechanisms of these negotiations in the fictional world of Apuleius’ Metamorphoses, focusing on the protagonist Lucius’ discursive self-fashioning in Books 1–3. Recent work on the ancient novel has examined the importance of speech, especially rhetorical speech, as one mode of characterization (Van Mal-Maeder 2001, De Temmerman 2014a & b; see also Harrison, forthcoming), while studies of the Second Sophistic have emphasized the importance of public performance and social networks in the self-definition of individuals and groups (Gleason 1995, Whitmarsh 2011, Eshleman 2012). Yet negotiations of power and identity may occur not only in public, rhetorical contexts, but also in private exchanges between individuals. Drawing on Laird’s discussions of the representation of speech and power in Latin literature (1990, 1999), I investigate Lucius’ fluid negotiations of identity and status during his private interactions with others in the opening books of the Metamorphoses. In his conversations with the strangers on the road to Hypata and his host Milo, Lucius seeks to present himself verbally as a member of the elite and an aspiring intellectual. Yet he undermines this image through his own words and actions, revealing an excessive curiosity about magic and a verbal and physical passivity that belie his claims to elite status and prefigure his metamorphosis into a speechless, enslaved animal.

Maps, notes--all that stuff is very helpful and expands my understanding of what we're covering in classes. And using this Kindle edition makes locating a reference almost instantaneous. No riffling thin pages, searching for one verse, while the professor has already moved on. For the first time ever I'm actually reading along, not flipping pages. (I've had the books of the Bible memorized in order since I was eight years old, but there are an awful lot of pages in a Bible, and it takes a little time to locate a passage, unless you've visited it so many times that the book just falls open there!)A great version.     INTRODUCTION TO THE FOUR GOSPELS How could an obscure Galilean peasant and carpenter with no academic training and no social status, one who died the most ignominious death imaginable, establish a movement that would conquer the Roman world and become a worldwide religious force? Moreover, how do we affirm the historical trustworthiness of such incredible stories about a man who controlled nature’s forces, healed the sick, cast out demons, raised the dead, and was raised himself after being crucified? The Gospels tell us the story of Jesus—his virgin birth and childhood; his inauguration to ministry; his impact on the people of Judea, Samaria, Galilee, and Phoenicia during his messianic ministry; and his death and resurrection. It is the most important story that history will ever tell, for it chronicles the life of the extraordinary Son of God who has come into this world.
