INSTITUT DE TOURAINE Fact sheet 1. Identity Founded in 1912, Institut de Touraine is a private higher education institute. The school has a full-time staff of 30, including 18 permanent teachers. The school is a non-profit organization. Our board of directors includes the University of Tours, the Municipality, the Chamber of Commerce, the local and the regional councils. 2. Our mission Institut de Touraine’s goal is to provide relevant and high-quality courses of French language and culture for all types of learners, at all levels, taking into account their objectives and their needs. Our pedagogy is task-oriented. We teach speaking / writing and reading skills in a balanced way. All programs are based on our own curricula, taking into account the immersive context. 3. Quality Institut de Touraine has been awarded the Qualité FLE label since its inception in 2007. We obtained top marks in all domains at the last renewal (2015). The school is a member of Groupement FLE, the main professional association of language schools in France. Our cooperation agreement with the University of Tours is an additional guarantee of academic excellence. We are a member institution of CampusFrance. 4. The city of Tours Tours Metropole is an urban area of 300,000 inhabitants, including 30,000 students in higher education. This is the capital city of the Val de Loire (Loire Valley), a region famous for its Renaissance castles, its medieval cities and La Loire à Vélo. The region is part of the UNESCO World Heritage list. Tours city is one hour away from Paris by TGV. There are around 20 trains per day between Paris and Tours station or Saint-Pierre-des-Corps (the second station in Tours). Direct trains run between Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport and Saint-Pierre-des-Corps. Many bus companies operate regular services between Paris, Paris airports and Tours city as well. 5. Courses Various courses are offered throughout the year: intensive, standard, a combination of group class and private tuition, language program with cultural activities, etc. The minimum age is 16 to attend these programs. Please refer to our documents “Course offer 2019” and “Rates 2019” for detailed explanations about the courses and fees. We organize closed groups as well, for secondary schools or foreign universities. In summer, teachers' training programs are available for French teachers. 6. Examination center Institut de Touraine is an official examination center for DELF and DALF. There are 8 sessions per year. 7. Location and premises The school is located in the very center of Tours City, a few minutes away from the shopping area and the medieval district, where numerous restaurants and cafés can be found. With a total area of 45,000 sq. ft. across 3 buildings (including a 19th-century private mansion and 16th-century monastic house), the school has 30 classrooms, 6 language laboratories and digital material for teaching. Our resource center is open every day to complement the courses, with tutoring available. All students benefit from our online learning platform to supplement their courses. 8. Accommodation Our accommodation department can book different types of accommodation upon request: homestay, residence, hotels. Most accommodation is within walking distance from the school. Please check the “Accommodation 2019” document for further details. 9. Extracurricular activities Activities are offered on a regular basis: movie screening, guided tours, wine tasting or cooking workshops. The frequency of activities increases from June until August, with a large social and cultural program and daily activities on offer. 10. Standard course - 15 hours per week To improve your French in a balanced way (alternating oral and reading/writing skills), morning lessons from Monday to Friday, benefiting of free afternoons to discover Tours and its region at your own pace. o Language course from 2 to 48 weeks o Morning classes only, 15 hours per week o Available from 7 January until 13 December 2019 o Class size from 10 to a maximum limit of 15 students per class Starting dates: every Monday, except for complete beginners (see note below). 2. Intensive course – 21 hours per week An intensive program to improve faster – in addition to the standard course, you will attend phonetics lessons and course units that will take into account your objectives and your difficulties, to design a track that fits your needs and interests (French culture, exam preparation, etc.). o Language course from 2 to 48 weeks o 21h00 per week, including: 15h language course (morning classes), 1h30 of phonetics, 1h30 of tutorials (writing /reading and oral skills), 3h00 of cultural workshops (history, gastronomy, literature, arts, etc.), practical workshops (communication, preparation for higher education), or DELF DALF exam preparation o Available from 7 January until 13 December 2019 o Class size from 10 to a maximum limit of 15 students per class Starting dates: every Monday, except for complete beginners (see note below). 3. Combi course - standard course + 2 hours of private lessons A flexible course that combines group lessons in the morning and private lessons, with a program that fits your objectives and needs o Language course 2 weeks minimum o Morning classes, 15 hours per week o 2 hours of private lesson per week o Available from 7 January until 13 December 2019 Complete beginners for the standard (1), the intensive (2) or the combi (3) course, complete beginners must start their course on either: 7 January, 4 February, 4 March, 1 April, 29 April, 27 May, 1 July, 29 July, 26 August, 23 September, 21 October and 18 November 2019. Recommended starting dates for the standard (1), the intensive (2) or the combi (3) course , for studies lasting 4 weeks or more: 7 January, 4 February, 4 March, 1 April, 29 April, 27 May, 1 July, 29 July, 26 August, 23 September, 21 October and 18 November 2019. 4. Private lessons (at the Institut or via Skype) A course completely adapted to your profile and your expectation, a flexible schedule and a number of hours in relation with your objectives (examination, work, etc.) and availability. Private tuitions are available from 7 January until 13 December 2019. They can be attended separately or in combination with group lessons. The course can be taken via Skype, with access to our online learning platform. 5. French and volunteering A combination of French language studies and community service in France. You will practice the language and develop your professional and intercultural skills while acting as an international volunteer. o French language course lasting at least 12 weeks o Morning classes, 15 hours per week o One afternoon of community service during 10 weeks in a partner organization – recognition in your studies o Minimum level of French : B1 o Available from 7 January until 13 December 2019 6. Discovery course – French and cultural activities This course offers you the opportunity to combine learning French and discovering the Loire Valley during summertime, an ideal way to practice your French through selected activities. A standard course (1) or an intensive course (2) including a cultural program registration, for 2 or 4 weeks. The cultural program includes, for every 2-week period: 1 full day excursion, 1 half-day excursion, 1 cooking workshop and 1 wine tasting workshop (*), i.e. around 15h of activities in total. (*) For students over 18. Starting dates : every Monday from 27 May until 13 September 2019 7. Language and culture in the Loire Valley (50+) A one-week stay for seniors that combines cultural discoveries, French language course, shared meals and outings with your teacher. A one-week course with 15 hours of morning class. Minimum level : B1. The program includes 12 hours of cultural activities (guided tours, wine tasting) and 2 lunches with your teacher. Starting date: Monday 2 September 2019 8. Training for teachers of French as a foreign language 8.1 Summer program for teachers of French For teachers of French who wish to develop their knowledge in didactics and methodology, to observe different practices and to gain an insight into contemporary France. Training course for teachers of French, duration: 1 to 4 weeks, with 20 or 25 hours per week: o 20 hours of didactics and methodology (oral and written French, phonetics, culture), o 5 hours of language reinforcement and phonetics (optional). o The detailed program of this course is available on our website. This training course is eligible for Erasmus + funding. This training can be attended from 1 July until 26 July 2019 8.2 Tailor-made programs, in France and abroad For a group of teachers, organization of a teachers training program that is adapted to the expectations and the objectives of the participants. The program can take place at the Institut de Touraine or abroad. A draft program and a quotation are provided upon request. 9. Linguistic stay for groups For high schools, universities or vocational schools, we organize tailor-made programs, in accordance with the expectations and the objectives of the partner. A proposal is drawn up upon request, including courses, accommodation, transfers and extracurricular activities.
