In this study two phylogenies are reconstructed using parsimony and Bayesian methods. A family-level phylogeny was estimated to test the monophyly and time of divergence of the South African lineage. This analysis, based on a published ITS phylogeny and an additional ten South African taxa, showed a strongly supported South African clade sister to the campanuloids. -

www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Evaluation of drought resistance and transcriptome analysis for the identifcation of drought‑responsive genes in Iris germanica Jingwei Zhang1, Dazhuang Huang1*, Xiaojie Zhao1 & Man Zhang2 Iris germanica, a species with very high ornamental value, exhibits the strongest drought resistance among the species in the genus Iris, but the molecular mechanism underlying its drought resistance has not been evaluated. To investigate the gene expression profle changes exhibited by high‑ drought‑resistant I. germanica under drought stress, 10 cultivars with excellent characteristics were included in pot experiments under drought stress conditions, and the changes in the chlorophyll (Chl) content, plasma membrane relative permeability (RP), and superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), free proline (Pro), and soluble protein (SP) levels in leaves were compared among these cultivars. Based on their drought‑resistance performance, the 10 cultivars were ordered as follows: ‘Little Dream’ > ‘Music Box’ > ‘X’Brassie’ > ‘Blood Stone’ > ‘Cherry Garden’ > ‘Memory of Harvest’ > ‘Immortality’ > ‘White and Gold’ > ‘Tantara’ > ‘Clarence’. Using the high‑drought‑resistant cultivar ‘Little Dream’ as the experimental material, cDNA libraries from leaves and rhizomes treated for 0, 6, 12, 24, and 48 h with 20% polyethylene glycol (PEG)‑6000 to simulate a drought environment were sequenced using the Illumina sequencing platform. We obtained 1, 976, 033 transcripts and 743, 982 unigenes (mean length of 716 bp) through a hierarchical clustering analysis of the resulting transcriptome data. The unigenes were compared against the Nr, Nt, Pfam, KOG/COG, Swiss‑Prot, KEGG, and gene ontology (GO) databases for functional annotation, and the gene expression levels in leaves and rhizomes were compared between the 20% PEG‑6000 stress treated (6, 12, 24, and 48 h) and control (0 h) groups using DESeq2. -

A probable oligochaete from an Early Triassic Lagerstätte of the southern Cis-Urals and its evolutionary implications. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 65 (2): 219–233. Oligochaetes, despite their important role in terrestrial ecosystems and a tremendous biomass, are extremely rare fossils. The palaeontological record of these worms is restricted to some cocoons, presumable trace fossils and a few body fossils the most convincing of which are discovered in Mesozoic and Cenozoic strata. The Olenekian (Lower Triassic) siliciclastic lacustrine Petropavlovka Lagerstätte of the southern Cis-Urals yields a number of extraordinary freshwater fossils including an annelid. The segmented body with a secondary annulation of this fossil, a subtriangular prostomium, a relatively thick layered body wall and, possibly, the presence of a genital region point to its oligochaete affinities. Other fossil worms which have been ascribed to clitellates are reviewed and, with a tentative exception of two Pennsylvanian finds, affinities of any pre-Mesozoic forms to clitellate annelids are rejected. The new fossil worm allows tracing of a persuasive oligochaete record to the lowermost Mesozoic and confirms a plausibility of the origin of this annelid group in freshwater conditions. A phylogenetic framework was built to visualize how cytogenetic traits distributed across taxa. -

Replacement of Reynoldsia Qiu & Bouché, 1998 (preocc.) with Norealidys Blakemore, 2008 (Oligochaeta : Lumbricidae) by R.J. Blakemore c/- YNU, Yokohama, Japan [date:- 12 th February, 2008 ] Under ICZN (1999: Art. 52-54, 60), a new substitute anagrammatic genus-group name, Norealidys Blakemore, 2008: 1 (nom. nov. ), is herein provided for the primary homonym Reynoldsia Qiu & Bouché, 1998: 102 (Oligochaeta : Lumbricidae) [non Malloch, 1934: 230 (Diptera : Muscidae)]. Its feminine gender is retained to comply with type (and only currently know species), Reynoldsia andaluciana Qiu & Bouché, 1998: 103 that now becomes Norealidys andaluciana (Qiu & Bouché, 1998) (comb. nov .) [misspelt “ andalousia ” by Bouché et al. , (2004: 386)]. Note: the botanical genus “Reynoldsia ” of flowering plant family Araiaceae is not homonymous. Previously, Blakemore (2006; 2007: pages 5, 60) formally noted replacement was required for Reynoldsia Qiu & Bouché, 1998 [misspelt as “Reynodsia ” by Qiu & Bouché (1998: 1) and as “Reynolsia ” by Qiu & Bouché (1998: 2) – both “incorrect original spellings” since stated to be a patronym for Dr J. Reynolds, therefore “ Reynoldsia ” as per Qiu & Bouché (1998: 102)]. Dr Cs. Csuzdi (21.x.2005 pers. comm.) notified Dr M. Bouché this genus name was preoccupied, and the current author made further contact attempts, but no response has been forthcoming from the original authors and the name is not known to have been replaced nor validated until now. EBERHARD^ AND ELDREDGE BERMINGHAM Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, Apartado 2072, Balboa, República de Panamá ABSTRACT.•We present a phylogenetic analysis of relationships among members of the Amazona ochrocephala species complex of parrots, a broadly distributed group in Middle and South America that has been a "taxonomic headache." Mitochondrial DNA sequence data are used to infer phylogenetic relationships among most of the named subspecies in the complex. Sequence-based phylogenies show that Middle American subspecies included in the analysis are reciprocally monophyletic, but subspecies described for South America do not reflect pat- terns of genetic variation. Samples from the lower Amazon cluster with samples collected in western Amazonia•not with samples from Colombia and Venezuela, as was predicted by subspecies classification. All subspecies of the complex are more closely related to one another than to other Amazona species, and division of the complex into three species {A. ochrocephala, A. auropalliata, and A. oratrix) is not supported by our data. Divergence-date estimates suggest that these parrots arrived in Middle America after the Panama land-bridge formed, and then expanded and diversified rapidly. As in Middle America, diversification of the group in South America occurred during the Pleistocene, possibly driven by changes in distribution of forest habitat.
