Half of the material here is not only previously unreleased - it had never been heard, even by the most dedicated collectors of Wyatt rarities. Until reappearing, seemingly out of nowhere, last year, the demo for “Rivmic Melodies”, an extended sequence of song fragments destined to form the first side of the second album by Soft Machine (the band Wyatt had helped form in 1966 as drummer and lead vocalist, and with whom he had recorded an as-yet unreleased debut album in New York the previous spring), was presumed lost forever. As for the shorter song discovered on the same acetate, “Chelsa”, it wasn't even known to exist! This music was conceived by Wyatt while off the road during and after Soft Machine's second tour of the US with the Jimi Hendrix Experience, first in New York City during the summer of 1968, then in the fall of that year while staying at the Experience's rented house in California, where he was granted free access to the TTG recording facility during studio downtime.

A ta slova byla Sun Ra. O něm jsem místopřísežně v nejrůznějších médiích slíbil, že ve druhém dílu napíšu stěžejní článek, a vrátilo se mi to jako bumerang. Toho jsem tedy dosáhl, i když by si tento zcela zásadní muzikant zasloužil celou knihu o několika tisících stránek. Přesto studium jeho odkazu pro mě znamenalo otevření dalších dimenzí pro další bádání a pochopení zcela nových věcí. Řada textů vznikla díky možnosti navštívit některé věhlasné světové festivaly, které se věnují alternativní hudbě a neberou ji jako okrajovou záležitost, ale šanci pro poznávání současných trendů. Byla to příležitost blíže poznat řadu umělců a v neposlední řadě pochopit fakt, že takzvaná „alternativa“ je otevřena každé vstřícné duši. A věřte, že na tyto akce v Rakousku či Francii chodí číratí punkáči i zasloužilí důchodci v oblecích a vytváří společnou komunitu lidí, kteří v jakémkoliv věku hledají nové impulsy a mají mnoho společného - totiž právě ono hledání. Tímto bych chtěl poděkovat jejich organizátorům. Opět se čtenáři i kritici budou ptát, proč zde to a tohle zrovna chybí, i když je to trendy nebo klasika nos plus ultra, a proč jsou zde zastoupeni relativně marginální muzikanti či soubory a proč zde relativně malý prostor dostala tentokrát domácí scéna.

2 I have been the editor of magazines on tropical fish, exotic pets, UFOs, cryptozoology, and – of course – music, and there is something that I have noticed. Over the years various publishers have tried to get me to publish “thematic” issues, and this is something that I am loathe to do. For example, in a music magazine like this one, if I were to do a themed “punk” issue, it would immediately alienate all the people who like progressive rock. That is one thing that I am particularly proud of in this magazine; we cover anything, and everything, from anarchopunk to prog, and from folk to experimental jazz rock. In this specific issue there is everything from an interview with Barbara Dickson to articles about Rick Wakeman and Hugh Hopper. CHART MYTHOS The JAMs’ and The KLF’s Invocation of Mu [Received August 18th 2016; accepted September 22nd 2016 – DOI: 10.21463/shima.10.2.07] Jon Fitzgerald <[email protected]> Southern Cross UniversitY Philip Hayward <[email protected]> Kagoshima UniversitY Research Center for the Pacific Islands and UniversitY of TechnologY SYdneY ABSTRACT: The JAMs and The KLF, two overlapping popular music ensembles led by British multi-media performers JimmY CautY and Bill Drummond, were notable for both the success theY had with a batch of singles in the late 1980s and early 1990s and the complex mythologY theY constructed and celebrated in song lYrics, music videos, press releases and short films. KeY to their mYthological project was their association with the fictional lost island-continent of Mu (with the band name JAMs being an abbreviation for ‘Justified Ancients of Mu Mu’). The latter identitY was derived from Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson’s Illuminatus trilogY of novels in which the aforementioned “ancients” were a secret brotherhood involved in combatting the rival Illuminati, who originated in Atlantis. As the JAMS’ and KLF’s oeuvres progressed, aspects of Mu and Atlantis were synthesised by CautY and Drummond with elements of other actual and fictional islands. The article traces the initial imagination and representation of Mu in esoteric crYpto-historical literature, its rearticulation in Shea and Wilson’s counter-cultural novels and its invocation and function in CautY and Drummond’s work with The JAMs and The KLF. Wyatt, Ayers, Hopper and their new friends Daevid Allen and Mike Ratledge formed the Soft Machine; whereas Sinclair and the others went on to form Caravan. Soft Machine (103), one of the greatest rock bands of all times, started out with albums such as Volume Two (mar 1969 - apr 1969) that were inspired by psychedelic-rock with a touch of Dadaistic (i.e., nonsensical) aesthetics; but, after losing Allen and Ayers, they veered towards a personal interpretation of Miles Davis' jazz-rock on Three (may 1970 - jun 1970), their masterpiece and one of the essential jazz, rock and classical albums of the 1970s. Minimalistic keyboards a` la Terry Riley and jazz horns highlight three of the four jams (particularly, Hopper's Facelift). The other one, Moon In June, is Wyatt's first monumental achievement, blending a delicate melody, a melancholy atmosphere and deep humanity.
