Hawkwind – 50Th Anniversary Live
All Aboard The Skylark“ zusammen. ‚Born To Go‘, ‚Space Is Deep‘, ‚Spirit Of The Age‘, ‚The Watcher‘, ‚Silver Machine‘ oder die beiden Doppelpacks ‚Assault And Battery / The Golden Void‘ und ‚Master Of The Universe / Welcome To The Future‘. Doch genauso bekommen insgesamt fünf Stücke aus „All Aboard The Skylark“ ihr Recht. -

The Relatives & Phil Miller Virtually 43:42 Relatives Records 2013 www.relativesrecords.com Anyone like myself who still follows the fortunes of the epic splendours of the Canterbury scene with unrestrained passion, will revel in this delightful work which features Phil Miller (a permanent fixture of this British quintet) as well as the guest appearance of Richard Sinclair in its intense conclusion, On My Mind. Actually, within the group there’s another member who should be familiar to Canterbury conaisseurs: Jack Monck, an excellent bassist with a gift for jazzy vocalisation – featuring in the original line‐up of Delivery with Steve and Phil Miller and the late Pip Pyle as well as heading Inside the Whale, a very interesting CD released in 2001 with the collaboration of the aforementioned Pip Pyle. Virtually unfolds over eight well‐constructed tracks of authentic passion and commitment. Out of this emerges the horn, which reveals Marc Hadley (together with Monck) as a genuine band‐leader. The sax stamps Marc’s identity on most of the tracks as well as the bassist’s (with the exception of the jazzy Stately Waltz, bearing the signature of keyboard player Willem Jan Droog) but everything is supported by the very precise drumming of Damian Rodd. Going Down, the first track ‐ with its jazz‐soul flavour, reminiscent of Donald Fagen‐ opens with wonderful aplomb by the great Phil who erupts with his typical guitar sound ‘borderline’ between rock and jazz to create a dialogue with Hadley’s robust, full‐blooded sax. A really great piece. However this is not to take away from Leading the Fight, a typical Monck composition with its delicate reverberations, distinctly ‘canterburian’ in style, in which is heard Miller’s sumptuous acoustic accompaniment and the excellent flute playing of the leader. -

In a word, Radio Massacre International nail the vintage electronic music sound, but the band is simply more "nimble" than the first generation models, which greatly enhances the listening pleasure of the suitably attuned listener...if you're a musical novice unacquainted with RMI's sources, this music will serve as a stellar introduction to the form.”– Bill Tilland, All Music Guide “Frankly there isn't anyone out there doing this kind of music better… If you have a yearning for the glory days of the Berlin school, this is where you should be going.” – Spacerock.co.uk Radio Massacre International (RMI) is an electronic improvising trio that is carving out new ground in the genres of electronic space music and space rock. Composed of Steve Dinsdale (keyboards, electronics, drums), Duncan Goddard (keyboards, electronics, bass) and Gary Houghton (guitar, keyboards), the trio improvises with a mixture of vintage and modern analogue and digital equipment to create massive, shifting electronic soundscapes. Instantly recognizable, RMI’s organic, visceral, and at times rough-edged explorations in space music transport the genre popularized by Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel/Manuel Gottsching and Klaus Schulze in the 1970s into the 21st century. -

They’d just hired it for a couple of months… …My goal was to make the music I’d actually like to listen to. … …I was clearly imagining life without a band at all, imagining a music I could make alone, like the painter I always wanted to be.” – Robert Wyatt, 2012 Some have called this - the complete set of Robert Wyatt's solo recordings made in the US in late 1968 - the ultimate Holy Grail. Half of the material here is not only previously unreleased - it had never been heard, even by the most dedicated collectors of Wyatt rarities. Until reappearing, seemingly out of nowhere, last year, the demo for “Rivmic Melodies”, an extended sequence of song fragments destined to form the first side of the second album by Soft Machine (the band Wyatt had helped form in 1966 as drummer and lead vocalist, and with whom he had recorded an as-yet unreleased debut album in New York the previous spring), was presumed lost forever. As for the shorter song discovered on the same acetate, “Chelsa”, it wasn't even known to exist! This music was conceived by Wyatt while off the road during and after Soft Machine's second tour of the US with the Jimi Hendrix Experience, first in New York City during the summer of 1968, then in the fall of that year while staying at the Experience's rented house in California, where he was granted free access to the TTG recording facility during studio downtime. -

2 I have been the editor of magazines on tropical fish, exotic pets, UFOs, cryptozoology, and – of course – music, and there is something that I have noticed. Over the years various publishers have tried to get me to publish “thematic” issues, and this is something that I am loathe to do. For example, in a music magazine like this one, if I were to do a themed “punk” issue, it would immediately alienate all the people who like progressive rock. That is one thing that I am particularly proud of in this magazine; we cover anything, and everything, from anarchopunk to prog, and from folk to experimental jazz rock. In this specific issue there is everything from an interview with Barbara Dickson to articles about Rick Wakeman and Hugh Hopper. But, it is one of the more peculiarly Fortean aspects of magazine publishing that no matter how hard one tries, the vagaries of the space time continuum and Dear Friends, the very nature of the universe itself mean that no matter how hard you try to avoid doing themed Welcome to another edition of the Gonzo Weekly. issues, these appear of their own volition and the I have worked in publishing, on and off, since I first universe decides to present you with a theme, come edited my school newspaper at the age of 10, and what may. whilst I do not wish to claim that I am some sort of Citizen Kane-type publishing mogul, I have had a Once again, look at this issue. 2 Another happened last year when the Rolling Stones dragged Mick Taylor away from undeserved obscurity, and played a series of barnstorming gigs including Glastonbury Festival, and another is going on at the moment and started last night. King Crimson have been, unarguable, one of the most idiosyncratic and artistically interesting bands for forty five years now, since they formed in 1968. Leader Robert Fripp left the music business some years ago, and King Crimson seem to have been on indefinite hiatus since about 2008. However, last year Fripp announced that the band will return, and this week, the new seven piece line-up played their first shows. The silence surrounding these shows is deafening. I spoke to Jakko Jakszyk who is the second guitarist and vocalist with the new King Crimson, last week on Facebook. He was understandably cagey about Dear Friends, what was happening. I asked how the rehearsals were going, and he said that they seemed OK but Welcome to another issue of the Gonzo Weekly. told me to ask him again after they had done a show or two. We are always being told how the music industry is in crisis and how record sales are plummeting. He will be back in the UK in October, apparently, However, once or twice a year there are still major so I will be doing my best to nail him down for a artistic and cultural events which take the western proper interview then. world by storm.
