They’d just hired it for a couple of months… …My goal was to make the music I’d actually like to listen to. … …I was clearly imagining life without a band at all, imagining a music I could make alone, like the painter I always wanted to be.” – Robert Wyatt, 2012 Some have called this - the complete set of Robert Wyatt's solo recordings made in the US in late 1968 - the ultimate Holy Grail. Half of the material here is not only previously unreleased - it had never been heard, even by the most dedicated collectors of Wyatt rarities. Until reappearing, seemingly out of nowhere, last year, the demo for “Rivmic Melodies”, an extended sequence of song fragments destined to form the first side of the second album by Soft Machine (the band Wyatt had helped form in 1966 as drummer and lead vocalist, and with whom he had recorded an as-yet unreleased debut album in New York the previous spring), was presumed lost forever. As for the shorter song discovered on the same acetate, “Chelsa”, it wasn't even known to exist! This music was conceived by Wyatt while off the road during and after Soft Machine's second tour of the US with the Jimi Hendrix Experience, first in New York City during the summer of 1968, then in the fall of that year while staying at the Experience's rented house in California, where he was granted free access to the TTG recording facility during studio downtime.

  • Introduction in Their Thirty Years Together, the Grateful Dead Forever
    Introduction In their thirty years together, the Grateful Dead forever altered the way in which popular music is performed, recorded, heard, marketed, and shared. Founding members Jerry Garcia, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, and Bob Weir took the name Grateful Dead in 1965, after incarnations as Mother McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions and The Warlocks. Despite significant changes in the band’s lineup, including the addition of Mickey Hart and the death of Ron McKernan, the band played together until Jerry Garcia’s death in 1995. From the beginning, the Grateful Dead distinguished themselves by their preference for live performance, musical and business creativity, and an unprecedented dedication to their fans. Working musicians rather than rock stars, the Dead developed a distinctive sound while performing as latter-day American troubadours, bringing audio precision to their live performances and the spontaneity of live performances to their studio work. Side-stepping the established rules of the recording industry, the Dead took control of the production and distribution of their music. With a similar business savvy, they introduced strategic marketing innovations that strengthened the bond with their fans. This exhibition, the first extensive presentation of materials from the Grateful Dead Archive housed at the University of California, Santa Cruz, testifies to the enduring impact of the Grateful Dead and provides a glimpse into the social upheavals and awakenings of the late twentieth century—a transformative period that profoundly shaped our present cultural landscape. She has two double platinum CDs and has performed in concert throughout Europe. In the U.S., she recorded a duet with country singer Collin Raye and considers singing with him at the Grand Ole Opry one of the highlights of her career. In 2003, Bobbie moved to New York to portray Krystal on the soap opera, All My Children, for which she won two Emmy nominations for Lead Actress. While in New York, she also recorded a smooth jazz CD, Something Beautiful, which debuted at number 21 on the Smooth Jazz charts. Bobbie has always contributed much of her free time promoting charitable causes. Among her favorites are Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids, Ahope for Children, and Desert Aids Project. She resides in Palm Springs, Calif., with her husband of 20 years, actor and writer David Steen. A ta slova byla Sun Ra. O něm jsem místopřísežně v nejrůznějších médiích slíbil, že ve druhém dílu napíšu stěžejní článek, a vrátilo se mi to jako bumerang. Toho jsem tedy dosáhl, i když by si tento zcela zásadní muzikant zasloužil celou knihu o několika tisících stránek. Přesto studium jeho odkazu pro mě znamenalo otevření dalších dimenzí pro další bádání a pochopení zcela nových věcí. Řada textů vznikla díky možnosti navštívit některé věhlasné světové festivaly, které se věnují alternativní hudbě a neberou ji jako okrajovou záležitost, ale šanci pro poznávání současných trendů. Byla to příležitost blíže poznat řadu umělců a v neposlední řadě pochopit fakt, že takzvaná „alternativa“ je otevřena každé vstřícné duši. A věřte, že na tyto akce v Rakousku či Francii chodí číratí punkáči i zasloužilí důchodci v oblecích a vytváří společnou komunitu lidí, kteří v jakémkoliv věku hledají nové impulsy a mají mnoho společného - totiž právě ono hledání. Tímto bych chtěl poděkovat jejich organizátorům. Opět se čtenáři i kritici budou ptát, proč zde to a tohle zrovna chybí, i když je to trendy nebo klasika nos plus ultra, a proč jsou zde zastoupeni relativně marginální muzikanti či soubory a proč zde relativně malý prostor dostala tentokrát domácí scéna.

    Rock and Roll has Tender Moments too... ! Photographs by Chalkie Davies 1973-1988 ! For as long as I can remember people have suggested that I write a book, citing both my exploits in Rock and Roll from 1973-1988 and my story telling abilities. After all, with my position as staff photographer on the NME and later The Face and Arena, I collected pop stars like others collected stamps, I was not happy until I had photographed everyone who interested me. However, given that the access I had to my friends and clients was often unlimited and 24/7 I did not feel it was fair to them that I should write it all down. I refused all offers. Then in 2010 I was approached by the National Museum of Wales, they wanted to put on a retrospective of my work, this gave me a special opportunity. In 1988 I gave up Rock and Roll, I no longer enjoyed the music and, quite simply, too many of my friends had died, I feared I might be next. So I put all of my negatives into storage at a friends Studio and decided that maybe 25 years later the images you see here might be of some cultural significance, that they might be seen as more than just pictures of Rock Stars, Pop Bands and Punks. That they even might be worthy of a Museum. So when the Museum approached me three years ago with the idea of a large six month Retrospective in 2015 I agreed, and thought of doing the usual thing and making a Catalogue.
