She has two double platinum CDs and has performed in concert throughout Europe. In the U.S., she recorded a duet with country singer Collin Raye and considers singing with him at the Grand Ole Opry one of the highlights of her career. In 2003, Bobbie moved to New York to portray Krystal on the soap opera, All My Children, for which she won two Emmy nominations for Lead Actress. While in New York, she also recorded a smooth jazz CD, Something Beautiful, which debuted at number 21 on the Smooth Jazz charts. Bobbie has always contributed much of her free time promoting charitable causes. Among her favorites are Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids, Ahope for Children, and Desert Aids Project. She resides in Palm Springs, Calif., with her husband of 20 years, actor and writer David Steen. Crowning of The Beer Snob We at Splash would like to announce that we have finally found a suitable replacement for our illustrious Beer Snob. A true Beer Snob is not easily replaced. That is why we have been searching every bar and alcohol serving establishment in Tidewater for someone with an impeccable sense of taste and a sharp enough wit to let the rest of us in on the true beer secrets. We at Splash would like to take this opportunity to anoint Mario Orlikoff of Newport News as the new Splash Beer Snob. Rumor has it that our former Beer Snob met with Bobbie Eakes a beer related accident. It seems that he was not content with drinking beer from a mug or a growler or any 2012 Mistress of Ceremonies object smaller than a full keg. Not only does it have serious hops - many from the Pacific Northwest, by the way - the brewing process fea- tures 60 hop additions over a 60-minute boil. Hoppin' right out of the gym. But seriously, East Coast brewers tend to use more specialty malts, and this is evident in this 60-minute bottle of bad- ness. Meaning that its contents constitute a near perfect blend of citrus and malt. Every sip brings a terrific grapefruit-like start with a malty, hoppy finish. So who wins the first Bottle Royale? If the mas- cots got involved in this fight, it would be over quickly, and really, really ugly. Stone's impressive gargoyle would give the term "battered fish" new meaning. But it's a battle of the buds (taste buds, not the other Buds) ... and Dogfish wins by, well, a head. Of the course this went the distance - all 24 ounces. In a matchup like this, everyone's a winner. Especially the people who do the tasting. Battle of the Bottles Craft beer matchup of the month: Stone IPA vs. Dogfish Head 60-minute IPA By Mario Orlikoff If this were the NBA, it would be Magic vs. Bird, West Coast vs. East Coast, Lakers vs. Celtics. But this is IPA, and we're talkin' beers, not bas- ketball. To celebrate the Virginia Beer Festival's return in May to Town Point Park, Splash Sports presents a mythical matchup, yet one that could potentially be all too real to one's taste buds. On one side, from San Diego, it's Stone's India Pale Ale, or IPA. On the other, from Delaware, it's Dogfish Head's 60-minute IPA. We had plenty of nicknames suggested for this "event." Bottlestar Galacticaand, Bottlefield Earth were rejected. We settled on Bottle Royale, because this truly is a meeting of craft beer royalty. A matchup of brews from the Old Dominion. The hop fields of the Pacific Northwest and all of their variety enable Stone to pack an IPA punch. • Fast Lane by Kristen Ashley
FAST LANE BY KRISTEN ASHLEY Acknowledgments Many moons ago, I had the occasion to really listen to the song “Life in the Fast Lane” by The Eagles. I’d heard it before, tons of times. But on that listen, something struck me. Being a romantic at heart, a romance novelist and addicted to romance for as long as I can remember, that song captured me as lyrics often do. Especially if a love story is told. Any kind of love story. Even the ones without happy endings. Maybe especially ones without happy endings. So much said in a few spare lines. So many emotions welling. And as is the magic of music, on each new listen, it happens again like you’d never heard that song before. I became obsessed with it, inspired by this cautionary tale, and determined to find the right story that would fit that inspiration. It was something I thought I’d fiddle with “someday,” which is where a great number of my ideas or inspirations are relegated. Then I read Taylor Jenkins Reid’s Daisy Jones and the Six. I have never, in my life, put down a book because I was loving it so much, I had to draw it out for as long as I could. And then, weeks later, I picked it up, only begrudgingly, because I knew opening that book again would mean finishing it, and I never wanted it to end. The fresh, unique way TJR told that story as an oral history of a 70s rock band blew my mind.

RED HOUSE RECORDS Publicity Contact: Ellen Stanley • [email protected] • (651) 644-4161 HOT TUNA Steady As She Goes RHR-CD-241 • Release Date: April 5, 2011 RHR-LP-241 • Release Date: May, 2011 Iconic roots rockers return with their first new studio album in 20 years! Red House Records is pleased to announce the April 5, 2011 release of Steady As She Goes, the first new album in twenty years from the legendary Hot Tuna. Featuring Rock & Roll Hall of Famers and Jefferson Airplane founding members Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen, the band celebrates over four decades of playing together. Now, with the release of their Red House debut, they prove that they remain one of the most innovative bands in American music. Why did it take so long for Hot Tuna to record a new album? “Well, it just worked out that way,” Kaukonen says. “Hot Tuna never quit playing. The moment just wasn’t right before; now it is, and we have a great project to show for it.” Returning to upstate New York decades after Kaukonen and Casady first played Woodstock, they went into Levon Helm’s studio over the winter to record twelve new tracks with mandolin player Barry Mitterhoff and drummer Skoota Warner (Cyndi Lauper, Matisyahu, Santana). Working with famed producer Larry Campbell (who Kaukonen worked with on his last solo album River of Time) the band plugged in for the electric Hot Tuna album that fans have been waiting for. Taking no prisoners, the band tears into it, kicking off with the rocking Americana number “Angel of Darkness” (co- written by Kaukonen and Campbell).
