HATE ON DISPLAY™ HATE SYMBOLS DATABASE 1 HATE ON DISPLAY This database provides an overview of many of the symbols most frequently used by a variety of white supremacist groups and movements, as well as some other types of hate groups. You can find the full listings at adl.org/hate-symbols INTRODUCTION TO THE HATE ON DISPLAY HATE SYMBOLS DATABASE ADL is a leading anti-hate organization that was founded in 1913 in response to an escalating climate of anti-Semitism and bigotry. Today, ADL is the first call when acts of anti-Semitism occur and continues to fight all forms of hate. A global leader in exposing extremism, delivering anti-bias education and fighting hate online, ADL’s ultimate goal is a world in which no group or individual suffers from bias, discrimination or hate. ADL’s Center on Extremism debuted its Hate on Display hate symbols database in 2000, establishing the database as the first and foremost resource on the internet for symbols, codes, and memes used by white supremacists and other types of haters. Over the past two decades, Hate on Display has regularly been updated with new symbols and images as they have come into common use by extremists, as well as new functions to make it more useful and convenient for users. Although the database contains many examples of online usage and shared graphics, another feature that makes it unique is its emphasis on real world examples of hate symbols—showing them as extremists actually use them: on signs and clothing, graffiti and jewelry, and even on their own bodies as tattoos and brands. -

Given that such goals are socially unacceptable, and often illegal, extremist speech communities need to camouflage their politics by either shifting the context in which they take place (e.g. private meetings, encrypted communications) or by coding and cloaking their terminology and symbols. Codes, euphemisms and veiled signs are therefore a defining feature of online extremist discourse.1 2 The use of such codes serves a range of interpersonal, rhetorical and political functions. First, codes help to ensure that communication remains within accepted (typically legal) boundaries. These codes shift over time, partly because what is socially and/or legally proscribed changes. Second, since codes essentially offer a new way to convey political extremism, they signal the continued advocacy of a political ideology for those able to interpret the code. Just as a party logo might change but will continue to represent the party in question, so too a new word, image or meme can communicate an established ideological commitment. -

Como preámbulo a este Manual sobre Simbología en el Deporte, es necesario mencionar que la Ley 19/2007, de 11 de Julio, contra la violencia, el racismo, la xenofobia y la intolerancia en el deporte, en diferentes artículos define tanto las conductas como los actos que incitan a la violencia, las medidas para evitarlos por parte de los organizadores, así como las obligaciones de las personas espectadoras o asistentes a los espectáculos públicos. El fenómeno de la violencia en el deporte en nuestra sociedad es complejo y supera el ámbito propiamente deportivo, obligando a las instituciones públicas a adoptar medidas que fomenten la prevención. Es ampliamente conocida la vinculación de muchos grupos de aficionados que asisten a los partidos de fútbol, con ideologías tanto de extrema derecha como de extrema izquierda, y como estos grupos aprovechan la publicidad y difusión que otorgan las gradas de un recinto deportivo para hacer apología de sus ideales. Asimismo, el gran número de partidos de índole internacional que tienen lugar cada año, hace que se desplacen hasta nuestro país numerosos aficionados extranjeros, algunos de los cuales portan sus banderas y señas de identidad, las cuales en algunas ocasiones, esconden mensajes de índole intolerante o racista que no son conocidos ni por los responsables policiales, ni por el personal de seguridad privada de los Clubes. Por ello, se ha elaborado el presente Manual, que recoge un amplio elenco de símbolos, emblemas y banderas, utilizados por distintos grupos, tanto de España como de otros países europeos, y cuya exhibición puede incitar a la violencia, el racismo, la xenofobia o la intolerancia. -

LINGUISTICS Putting the Elder Futhark into a Young Spiritualism: A Semantic Analysis of an Odinist Divination Guidebook Ashton Corsetti, Associates of Science, Bachelor's of English- Professional and Technical Writing Emphasis (in progress)* Keywords: old norwegian, elder futhark, spiritualism, old english, runes Curiosity: Interdisciplinary Journal of Research and Innovation Vol. 1, Issue 1, 2020 The Nordic people embodied the Elder Futhark runes—the oldest-known form of the Germanic writing system—with esotericism (knowledge available only to a small group of people), seeing them as a direct line of communication to divinity. This mystical significance has been reintroduced to neopagan groups through guidebooks on runecasting, a divinatory practice in which the runes are interpreted negatively or positively depending on how they land. This analysis checks the interpretations of a popular Odinist writer against secular scholarship, evaluating for both semantic authenticity in the Germanic tradition and runic symbolism within Odinism—a modern religious sect based on pre-Christian roots in Northern Europe. All 24 runes are separated into three groups of eight depending on their relationship to the Old English and Old Norwegian rune poems, both of which are involved in the reconstruction of runic etymology. The findings indicate a range of ideological terminologies that either stem from intellectual obscurity or are anachronistic when compared to Germanic traditions. This illustrates a spiritual appropriation of the runic symbols rather than a return to pre-Christian concepts, thus disqualifying the text as a source of scholarship. -

I have attempted to understand the relationships between the many Odin references in the names of many natural features, Viking Age farms and settlements within the area. A possible link to an Odin cult being in operation during the period and how that effected the settlements and activities surrounding Lake Östen was also investigated due to the high number of Odin related names, places, and monuments within the area. 219 The Odal and its Manifestation in the Landscape Torun Zachrisson The concept odal can be regarded in a narrow sense, i.e. as the inherited landed property of a family. But here it is argued that odal should be viewed in a wide sense - as a mentality that is of great importance to the under- standing of Late Iron Age society in Sweden. The article focuses on the material expressions which belonging to a family and possessing a farm could take in the individual farmstead in the Mälar Valley. The Viking Age is interpreted as a time period in which there was a need to make the odal visible. The acts of burying dead relatives on top of the graves of early an- cestors, erecting runestones, and possibly also erecting mounds are regarded as ways of guarding, marking, and confirming the possession of the odal in the odal man's own eyes and in his neighbours' and consequently also the odal man's position in society. DICTIONARY OF RUNES & THEIR PROPERTIES by Merrick A Brief History of Runes Extract from: Runes: Ancient Wisdom for the New Age; The Secrets of the Stones by Anders Andersson Odin, the most tragic nd noble of the Norse gods was doomed to a dark and gloomy life. His wisdom and ability to see into the future, when the gos would fall, lay hevy upon him. He is often pictured with two ravens, representing meaning and memory. They were his far-reaching eyes and ears, as they soared above the earth, constanly adding to his great wisdom. One of many mystical achievements Odin is credited with is the forumulation of the runes, symbols carved into stone. Aware that knowledge is only attained through sacrifice, he hanged himself from the branches of Yggdrasil, the tree of knowledge, for nine days and nights. This image is echoed on the Hanged Man card in the Tarot. Odin’s body was not equal to the suffering and he died. But through his infomitable will he was reborn, bringing with him the knowledge of the world beyond. And from this came the runes. The Elder Futark This is the oldest Futhark - the European common heritage. It is not known for certain when or by who it originated, however it could be among Germanic tribes at the beginning of our era. The Elder Futhark consists of 24 runes separated into three groups of eight (aett) – Freys Aett, Hagalls Aett and Tyrs Aett.
