ASPECTS OF THE MORPHOLOGY AND ECOLOGY OF A DIPLOZOON SPECIES (MONOGENEA) FROM THE GILLS OF LABEO UMBRATUS IN THE VAAL DAM AND VAAL RIVER BARRAGE, GAUTENG, SOUTH AFRICA. Avenant-Oldewage Dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Master of Science in Zoology in the Faculty of Science of the Rand Afrikaans University Johannesburg , May 2004 ABSTRACT To date, 4 diplozoidae parasites have been described form Africa. Two belonging to the genus Diplozoon, namely D. aegyptensis and D. ghanense from sites in Northern Africa. One belonging to the genus Neodiplozoon, namely Neodiplozoon polycotyleus . The fourth monogenean is the concern of this study which aimed to determine the exact classification of the monogenean found on the gills of Labeo umbratus in the Vaal Dam and Vaal River Barrage respectively. The study was conducted over a 13-month period, with field data collections occurring every two to three months from January 1999 to February 2000. Host fishes were collected with the aid of gill nets with mesh sizes of 90, 110 and 130mm respectively. In-field measurements were taken regarding the total length, fork length, position of parasites on the gill arches and the host gender. All parasites collected were fixed in steaming AFA and stored in 70% ethanol. Laboratory measurements of whole mounts were completed with the aid of light microscope and drawing tube attachment. Staining methods employed included Boraxcarmine-iodine, Mayer’s Hematoxylin and Horen’s Trichrome. Scanning electron microscopy was used to gather information regarding the external morphology of the parasites. -

The genus is characterised by specialised structures around the mouth and lips making it adapted to herbivorous feeding (algae and detritus). Clanwilliam sandfish (Labeo seeberi) was once widespread throughout its natural habitat (Olifants-Doring River system), but significant decreases in population size have seen them become absent in the Olifants River and retreat to the headwaters in the tributaries of the Doring River. Currently sandfish are confined to three populations namely the Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve (OKNR), Rietkuil (Riet) and Bos, with OKNR being the largest of the three and deemed the species sanctuary. -

Iranian Journal of Fisheries Sciences 14(1)112-129 2015 Fish diversity and assemblages according to distance from source along a coastal river gradient (Ehania River; south- east of Ivory Coast) Konan K.F.1,2,3; Edia O.E.1; Bony K.Y.1,2; Kouamé K.M.1,3; Gourène G.1 Received: May 2013 Accepted: December 2014 Abstract Fish assemblage was investigated during the study of longitudinal profile of the Ehania River Basin in south-eastern Côte d’Ivoire. This area is subjected to intense human activities with many plantations (palm tree, banana, pineapple, coffee, rubber and cocoa). Samples were collected, with gillnets of different mesh sizes, through 6 sampling surveys during dry and rainy seasons from February 2010 to December 2010 at 6 sampling sites. A total of 70 fish species belonging to 48 genera, 28 families and 10 orders were recorded. The temporal variation of diversity index is less marked than spatial variation. The upstream, with 35 species, was less rich in species than the medium area and downstream areas (respectively 46 and 68). The upstream and downstream areas gathered 35 species. Thirty three species were common to the upper and middle areas and 46 species appeared both in the lower courses and the middle area. The 21 species restricted to the lower part of the river are mainly estuarine/marine origin. The beta diversity value revealed low similarity between the lower and upper course of Ehania River. ABSTRACT Diet composition and trace metal concentration in the muscle of the lapping minnow Garra quadrimaculata (Rüppell, 1835) was investigated to study the trophic status of the species as well as to assess the level of bioaccumulation of heavy metals in the body of the fish. The study was conducted based on 328 gut samples collected from February to March (dry months) and from August to September (wet months) of the year 2011. Frequency of occurrence and volumetric methods were employed in this study. Detritus, fish eggs, macrophytes, phytoplankton and insects occurred in 54.9%, 16.2%, 43.9%, 56.4% and 26.6% of the guts, respectively and comprised 27.1%, 22.2%, 18.2%, 18.2% and 14.1% of the total volume of food, respectively. The proportions of different food items consumed varied during the dry and wet months. Fish eggs and detritus were the dominant food items during the dry months. Macrophytes and insects were also common in the diet. During the wet months, phytoplankton was the most dominant food item (33.5% by volume). Macrophytes, detritus and insects were also important in the diet. -

Some Aspects of the Biology of Dominant Fishes in Blue Nile River, Ethiopia

Ethiopia A biotic parameters, temperature, transparency, conductivity, pH and total dissolved solid of the river Minwyelet Mingist were taken. A total of 857 fish specimens were collected with the two sampling seasons from all Bahir Dar University, Bahir Dar sampling sites. Out of the total catch of specimens four dominant fish species was contributed 79 %. The Ethiopia length weight relationship of L. intermedius, L. forskalii and M. kannume were curvilinear and the relation was statistically significant (P<0.001).The mean Fulton Condition factor of L. intermedius and Abebe Getahun M. kannume were not showed significant variation (P>0.05) in both season and sex however, L. forskalii Addis Ababa University, Addis was statically significant (P< 0.01) in seasons only. Except L. nedgia M. kannume, C. gariepinus and O. Ababa, Ethiopia niloticus species were collected from the Blue Nile river were significant difference (ݔ2, P<0.05) from the theoretical 1:1 ratio. -

Spatio-Temporal Distribution of Labeobarbus Species in Lake Tana

Descriptive statistics was used to present the Bahir Dar University College of data. Chi-Square Test was used to compare the spatial variations of species between areas, the temporal Agriculture and Environmental variations between seasons. Labeobarbus intermedius was the most dominant specie, containing 38.8 % Sciences, Ethiopia of catch followed by L. tsanensis, L. platydorsus, L. brevicephalus within a catch composition of, 18.96%, 13.1%, 10.5%, respectively. Labeobarbus dainellii and L. gorguari were rarely collected. Five sampling sites, based on the nature, flow-rate of the river, human interference and suitability for fish spawning were selected by preliminary survey. Fish were sampled monthly in the non-peak spawning season (July, November and December) and bimonthly in the peak spawning season (August to October) using 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 cm stretched mesh size gillnets. A total of 1077 Labeobarbus specimens were collected. Labeobarbus intermedius, L. brevicephalus, L. nedgia and L. tsanensis were the dominant species, contributing 93.03% of the total catch. The monthly gonado-somatic index indicated that the peak spawning season for Labeobarbus species was from August to October. Labeobarbus intermedius and L. tsanensis were the first species to aggregate at the river mouth starting from July and L. brevicephalus and L. nedgia aggregate starting from September. Labeobarbus intermedius was the first to migrate to the upstream sites starting from the end of July followed by L. -

It appears that most species collected in small water bodies are relict populations of widespread species occuring in surrounding river basins, except for Barbus apleurogramina which might be a relict of a more ancient fish fauna. Distribution patterns are discussed in view of the supposed extent of river catchments during the Holocene. Une révision taxinomique des espèces de poissons récoltées dans le Sahara a permis de dresser une liste actualisée prenant en compte les connaissances récentes. I1 apparaît que la plupart des espèces collectées dans les petites collections d'eau sont des populations reliques d'espèces largement répandues dans les bassins hydrographiques voisins, àl'exception de Barbus npleurogranana qui pourrait être un vestige d'une faune plus ancienne.
