ABSTRACT Diet composition and trace metal concentration in the muscle of the lapping minnow Garra quadrimaculata (Rüppell, 1835) was investigated to study the trophic status of the species as well as to assess the level of bioaccumulation of heavy metals in the body of the fish. The study was conducted based on 328 gut samples collected from February to March (dry months) and from August to September (wet months) of the year 2011. Frequency of occurrence and volumetric methods were employed in this study. Detritus, fish eggs, macrophytes, phytoplankton and insects occurred in 54.9%, 16.2%, 43.9%, 56.4% and 26.6% of the guts, respectively and comprised 27.1%, 22.2%, 18.2%, 18.2% and 14.1% of the total volume of food, respectively. The proportions of different food items consumed varied during the dry and wet months. Fish eggs and detritus were the dominant food items during the dry months. Macrophytes and insects were also common in the diet. During the wet months, phytoplankton was the most dominant food item (33.5% by volume). Macrophytes, detritus and insects were also important in the diet. -

Descriptive statistics was used to present the Bahir Dar University College of data. Chi-Square Test was used to compare the spatial variations of species between areas, the temporal Agriculture and Environmental variations between seasons. Five sampling sites, based on the nature, flow-rate of the river, human interference and suitability for fish spawning were selected by preliminary survey. Fish were sampled monthly in the non-peak spawning season (July, November and December) and bimonthly in the peak spawning season (August to October) using 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 cm stretched mesh size gillnets. A total of 1077 Labeobarbus specimens were collected. Labeobarbus intermedius, L. brevicephalus, L. nedgia and L. tsanensis were the dominant species, contributing 93.03% of the total catch. The monthly gonado-somatic index indicated that the peak spawning season for Labeobarbus species was from August to October. Labeobarbus intermedius and L. tsanensis were the first species to aggregate at the river mouth starting from July and L. brevicephalus and L. nedgia aggregate starting from September. Labeobarbus intermedius was the first to migrate to the upstream sites starting from the end of July followed by L. -

Fish species identification was done by using literature and specimen deposited in Agriculture and Environmental the laboratory. Totally, 1106 fish specimens were collected from four Rivers. Cooperatives have inherent advantages in tackling the problems of poverty alleviation, food security and job creation. They are also considered to have immense potential to deliver goods and services in areas where both the state and the private sector have failed. Serious efforts are being made to strengthen capital of cooperatives base through increasing members’ subscription, mobilization of savings and value addition. The establishment of agricultural cooperative in Ethiopia is significantly associated with and responsible to overcome the problems that individual farmer could not solve solely. The cooperatives were thus permitted to exchange their members’ product, improve market access and directly provide their produce to the market through improving the bargaining power of farmer members. Ethiopian Government has also made efforts for cooperatives development that can be taken as opportunities. However, studies show that the growth of cooperatives in different parts of the country is not up to the expectation. Therefore, this study was conducted with the objective of assessing the challenges and prospects for agricultural cooperatives in south Gondar Zone, Ethiopia. In order to conduct the study, primary data were collected from the members of sampled cooperatives and supported by secondary data. -

Journal of Fisheries 9(1): 91206. Abstract Understanding of Ichthyofaunal diversity is a major gateway for the conservation of waterbodies in the world. Ethiopia has a rich Ichthyofaunal diversity, although they are poorly known. This study was carried out in two tributary rivers (Gibe and Wabe) of Gibe Sheleko National Park to investigate Ichthyofaunal diversity and morphometric characteristics of fish. By using monofilament gill-nets, fish were collected, identified and measured their morphometric. A total of 10 species were identified, dominated by Synodontis schall, followed by Labeobarbus nedgia and Labeobarbus intermedius. According to the Index of Relative Importance, S. schall was also first (49.13%), followed by L. intermedius (15.49%). Gibe River had a higher number of species than Wabe River. The Shannon Diversity Index in Gibe River was also higher (2.09) than Wabe (1.84) during the dry season, but lowest in the wet season (1.52 and 1.57 respectively).
