Hanlon Abstract The Piccolo in the 21st Century: History, Construction, and Modern Pedagogical Resources Keith D. Hanlon The piccolo and the flute have the same origin and share similar historical developments; however, they require different approaches to attain high levels of proficiency. The flute benefits from a well-documented history of construction, a lineage of pedagogy, and a vast repertoire while the piccolo has not shared the same prestige. Initially utilized as military instrument and seen as an auxiliary instrument by many, the piccolo has become an integral part of the modern orchestra. Unfortunately, the piccolo did not receive the same pedagogical attention as the flute until more recently. With the limited availability of piccolo teachers and reliable method books, most players have had to learn to play the piccolo on their own. It is only in the last few decades that the piccolo has become a respected solo and chamber instrument prompting the development of method books and teachers specializing in the piccolo. In the early 1970s, growth in the solo repertoire for the piccolo and the desire of performers to specialize on the instrument produced master piccolo teachers who are now publishing methods for the instrument. These specialists have been promoting the piccolo’s prominence in the new millennium and inspiring the next generation of piccolo players to specialize. The purpose of this document is to provide both teachers and students with a reference that includes a broad understanding of the historical use and mechanical development of the piccolo as well as an annotated bibliography of piccolo articles and research. If you are in the market for a new or used instrument, please consult this list (and look, you have LOTS of options!). Please email a band director if you find an instrument that is not on this list, as there may be other good instruments out there. With new instruments, you usually get what you pay for. With used instruments, you can sometimes find a name brand instrument as cheap as the ‘generic’ equivalent. But unlike the grocery store, ‘generic’ musical instruments very seldom measure up to the name brand equivalent. This is for many reasons: 1) Instruments made by companies listed below have a history of producing quality instruments. Generally speaking, they are designed and built by expert craftsmen. 2) Instruments from these companies use quality materials. The instruments are more reliable, have a longer lifespan, and parts are easily repaired and replaced if a problem develops. 3) Because they are crafted by experts and designed with quality materials, students can produce a quality sound more easily. 4) Repair technicians keep parts in stock for these instruments. These companies use standardized parts and materials that a repair technician can fix. Low-quality instruments use parts that aren’t compatible - don’t buy an instrument that cannot be repaired! It’s a waste of money. ​ 5) Just because an instrument is shiny, it doesn’t mean it will work well.

    PROGRAM NOTES Antonio Vivaldi Born March 4, 1678, Venice, Italy. Died July 28, 1741, Vienna, Austria. Piccolo Concerto in C Major, RV 443 Details regarding the composition and first performance of this concerto are unknown. The concerto is scored for piccolo and string orchestra with harpsichord. Performance time is approximately twelve minutes. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra's first performance of Vivaldi's Piccolo Concerto, RV 443 was given on a special June Festival concert at Orchestra Hall on June 9, 1966, with Walfrid Kujala as soloist and Antonio Janigro conducting. Our only previous subscription concert performances of this concerto were given on May 6, 7, and 8, 1982, also with Kujala and with Sir Georg Solti conducting. The Orchestra first performed this work at the Ravinia Festival on July 13, 1969, under Antonio Janigro, and most recently on August 11, 1973, under Lawrence Foster, with Kujala as soloist on both occasions. A 1966 performance of Vivaldi's C major piccolo concerto with Walfrid Kujala as soloist and Antonio Janigro conducting is included in From the Archives, vol. 21. The most original, popular, and influential Italian composer of his time, Vivaldi was very quickly forgotten. Within a hundred years of his death, he had achieved the ultimate fate of most composers—complete oblivion. After he was finally rediscovered in the early twentieth century, and eventually became one of the most performed of all composers again, he often was written off as excessively prolific and facile. Stravinsky famously dismissed his entire career as "the same concerto four hundred times," an assessment that was not just unkind, but also unfair.

The primary task of this kit is to sand and finish the fife. Sanding the inside of the bore is the most difficult job, so we have included a dowel and some self-adhesive sandpaper to make it easier for you. Peel the wax paper backing off the two pieces of sandpaper and wrap one around each end of the wooden dowel. One scrap is 100 grit (coarser) and the other is 180 grit (finer). _____2. Use the coarser end of the dowel to sand the bare wood inside the bore, moving the dowel back and forth in the direction of the grain (lengthwise). Blow out the sawdust now and then. Switch to the finer sandpaper at the other end of the dowel when you think the coarse paper has done its job. The smoother the bore, the easier it will be to play your fife. _____3. Test the brass ferrules to see if they slide over the ends of the fife. If not, carefully sand the ends of the fife until the brass fits easily all the way to the shoulder of the wood. _____4. Decorate the fife as desired. You may do some painting, wood-burning, lettering, carving and/or staining to suit your tastes. This is a fun project to customize. I think the instrument looks best when stained a deep reddish-brown color.

Familiar examples include pan­pipes, recorders, flutes, organ flue pipes 1­3 , and so on. Over the centuries, the acquisition of the necessary knowledge and skill for their successful production must have been laboriously accomplished by much trial and error. A more physically explicit understanding of the basic controlling mechanisms began to emerge during the great upsurge in scientific observation and discovery from the mid­19th century, as this was also accompanied by the relevant developments in physics, acoustics and fluid mechanics. These mechanisms can take several forms, depending on subtle differences in local and overall geometric detail and its relation to the magnitude, direction and distribution of any flow that is generating sound. One such form includes many examples of reverberant systems, where separating shear layers 3,4 provide the conditions where this coupled flow acoustic behaviour may occur. It is well known 1­4 that whenever a flow leaves a downstream facing edge it separates, forming a thin shear layer or vortex sheet. Such sheets, which involve high transverse velocity gradients, are very unstable and rapidly develop waves 1­4 .

Throughout the long history of contra- register double-reed instruments the assumed role has been to provide a foundation for the wind chord, along the same line as the double bass does for the strings. Due to the scale of these instruments - close to six metres in acoustic length, to reach the subcontra B flat’’, an octave below the bassoon’s lowest note, B flat’ - they have always been difficult and expensive to build, difficult to play, and often unsatisfactory in evenness of scale and dynamic range, and thus instruments and performers are relatively rare. Given this bleak outlook it is unusual to find a number of works written for solo contrabassoon by New Zealand composers. This exegesis considers the development of contra-register double-reed instruments both internationally and within New Zealand, and studies five works by New Zealand composers for solo contrabassoon, illuminating what it was that led them to compose for an instrument that has been described as the 'step-child' or 'Cinderella' of both the wind chord and instrument makers.

This coupled system has two resonance frequencies !Æ, which are respectively higher and lower than those of the upper and lower bores !U and !L excited independently. The !Æ differ even if !U ¼ !L. The normal effect of cross-fingering, i.e., pitch flattening, corresponds to excitation of the !À-mode, which occurs when !L ’ !U and the admittance peak of the !À-mode is higher than or as high as that of the !þ-mode. Excitation of the !þ-mode yields intonation anomaly. This occurs when !L / !U and the peak of the !þ-mode becomes sufficiently high. With an extended model having three degrees of freedom, pitch bending of the recorder played with cross-fingering in the second register has been reasonably explained.
