Leyde, Plantin, 1588. 2 parties en un volume in-8, vélin à recouvrements, traces d’attaches (Reliure de l’époque). 300 / 400 Seconde édition avec les importantes notes de Pierre Colvius, rare, donnée un an après l’édition originale par le même libraire. De la bibliothèque Noël Pinelli, avec ex-libris. Corps d’ouvrage un peu déboîté, petits manques aux coiffes. 4 ARIOSTE (L’). Orlando furioso, tutto ricorretto, et di nuove figure adornato. – I Cinque canti, i quali seguono la materia del Furioso. Con gli argomenti in rima, & discorsi di Luigi Grotta d’Adria. Venise, Vincenzo Valgrisi, [1566 ?]. Grand in-8, vélin rigide, dos lisse, pièce de titre en maroquin rouge postérieure, non rogné (Reliure de l’époque). 200 / 300 Belle édition vénitienne, reproduisant l’édition de 1556 publiée par Girolamo Ruscelli. Imprimée en caractères italiques sur deux colonnes, elle est superbement illustrée d’un titre orné d’un riche encadrement architectural, surmonté du portrait de L’Arioste en médaillon, de 51 remarquables figures à pleine page du peintre Dosso Dossi (1489-1542) placées dans de beaux cadres ornementés, et de 51 petits encadrements pour les arguments, le tout gravé sur bois. Manque le dernier feuillet comportant la marque de l’imprimeur. Importants manques de papier au titre et aux derniers feuillets, restaurés pour la plupart, date grattée et repassée à l’encre sur le titre, quelques mouillures. 5 BÈZE (Théodore de). Les Vrais pourtraits des hommes illustres en piété et doctrine. [Genève, Jean de Laon, 1581]. In-4, basane brune, dos orné, tranches mouchetées (Reliure du XVIIe siècle). 300 / 400 Édition originale de la traduction française, par Simon Goulart, parue un an après l’originale latine. Elle est ornée de quarante-huit portraits de réformateurs et d’humanistes dans de très jolis encadrements ; dix d’entre eux, dont les médaillons qui étaient restés blancs dans l’édition latine, sont ici en premier tirage. Suivent quarante- quatre vignettes emblématiques gravées sur bois. Reliure frottée avec petits manques, certains restaurés, mouillure marginale claire sur les premiers feuillets, partie inférieure du titre restaurée avec adresse manquante ajoutée au stylo bille. 6 [BIBLE]. Testamenti novi. Editio vulgata. Paris, Kerver, 1573. In-16, demi-chagrin bleu marine, médaillon de veau brun doré ancien rapporté sur chaque plat, dos orné de filets dorés et à froid (Reliure du XIXe siècle). 200 / 300 Édition ornée de 127 bois dans le texte, parfois signés P. R. ou I. F. La première signature est attribuée à l’imprimeur et graveur sur bois Pierre II Regnault, la seconde reste inconnue. Ces vignettes empruntent de nombreux thèmes iconographiques à Holbein dans l’Ancien Testament (ici absent), et à Hans Sebald Beham dans le Nouveau. Ex-libris manuscrits anciens au titre. 5 8 7 [BIBLE]. Αἱ του ἀγίου Παύλου ἐπιστολαί. Αἱ καθολικαί ἐπιστολαί. Αποκάλυψις του ἀγίου Ιωάννου του θεολόγου. Paris, Robert Estienne, 7 novembre 1546. In-16, maroquin rouge, dentelle florale dorée, dos lisse orné, filet sur les coupes, tranches dorées (Reliure du XVIIIe siècle). 200 / 300 Seconde partie de la première édition du Nouveau Testament grec de Robert Estienne, connue sous le nom d’édition « O mirificam ». C’est le premier livre imprimé avec la seconde fonte des « grecs du roi » gravée par Claude Garamont, dans un plus petit corps que la première. « La publication de cet élégant volume tenait à un projet d’impression de toute la Bibliothèque grecque en petit format, ainsi qu’on avait fait pour le texte hébreu ; mais ce projet n’a point été exécuté » (Renouard). Cette seconde partie, présentée seule, ne contient que les épîtres pauliniennes, les épîtres catholiques et l’Apocalypse. Entièrement imprimé en grec, le volume est orné de la marque au basilic sur le faux-titre, évoquant la qualité d’imprimeur du roi pour le grec de Robert Estienne, de la marque à l’olivier en fin d’ouvrage et de gracieux bandeaux et lettrines foliacés à grotesques en tête de chapitres, le tout gravé sur bois. Très bel exemplaire, complet des deux derniers feuillets blancs, en maroquin rouge du xviiie siècle. De la bibliothèque Pierre de Torcy, avec signature à l’encre violette sur une garde. Renouard, 65, n°2 – Schreiber, n°90 – Adams, B-1657 – Mortimer, I, n°74. 8 BOCCACE. Le Philocope. Contenant l’histoire de Fleury & Blanchefleur, divisé en sept livres, et nouvellement imprimé. Traduict d’italien en françois, par Adrien Sevin. Paris, Charles l’Angelier, 1555. In-8, veau fauve, décor d’entrelacs à la cire blanche et noire sertis de filets dorés et accompagnés de fleurons azurés se dégageant sur fond de pointillés dorés, cartouche central en réserve contenant un motif doré, dos lisse entièrement orné d’entrelacs de feuillage doré, tranches dorées (Reliure de l’époque). 1 500 / 2 000 Seconde édition de la traduction française, par Adrien Sevin, d’un des romans de Boccace les plus prisés pendant la Renaissance. 6 Le Filocolo est une longue épopée amoureuse en prose italienne, composée entre 1336 et 1338 par Boccace. Le sujet provient d’une ancienne légende française, dont la première version littéraire est l’œuvre d’un poète anonyme du XIIe siècle. « Le succès de cette œuvre de jeunesse de Boccace s’explique peut-être avant tout par son thème. La célèbre légende de Floir et Blancheflor [...] présentait une structure romanesque bien propre à susciter l’engouement populaire : deux enfants s’aiment depuis leur plus tendre enfance, tout les sépare. Elle est chrétienne et de naissance servile, il est fils de roi et sarrazin. Le caractère fatal et invincible de l’amour pourra donc s’affirmer à travers les innombrables obstacles que cette situation va engendrer. » (L. Hordoir, in Guillerm et al., Le Miroir des femmes 2, Lille, 1984, p. 73). La traduction d’Adrien Sevin avait d’abord été publiée en 1542 par Denis Janot et d’autres libraires associés. Elle fut réimprimée dans deux éditions concurrentes parues au cours de l’année 1555, dont la présente édition, qui a elle aussi été partagée entre plusieurs libraires parisiens. Belle reliure à entrelacs de cire peinte ornée d’un fer aux trois croissants de lune entrelacés. Cet emblème évoque un des attributs de Diane de Poitiers (1499-1566) ou encore le symbole du « port de la Lune » qui renvoie à la ville de Bordeaux. Le nom De Villaines figure dans deux ex-libris manuscrits différents – l’un en capitales romaines, l’autre en cursives bâtardes – inscrits sur le titre et le second contreplat du volume. Il pourrait s’agir, sans certitude, d’une marque de provenance du célèbre bibliophile Jean II Brinon († 1555), seigneur de Villaines. De la bibliothèque du comte Roussy de Sales, avec ex-libris. Sans le feuillet blanc final (GG8). Reliure restaurée, charnières, coiffes et coins refaits, première garde mobile renouvelée, repeintes sur les entrelacs. Petites mouillures marginales éparses, réparation ancienne au verso du titre.

One might question his presence in the “Faces of the Reformation” series. But considering that his presses printed not only Luther’s 95 Theses but also the papal indulgences that sparked Luther’s polemic pen, it seems fitting that he should be included. Gutenberg was born about 1395 as the son of a metalsmith, and he became acquainted with the printing business at a very young age. His invention of the moveable type press made the mass production of books a reality that would change the world. By 1450, his new invention was operating. As with most new ideas of this scale, the road was not smooth. In 1446, Johann Fust, Gutenburg’s financial backer, won a lawsuit against him regarding repayment of the funds. Gutenberg’s employee and son-in-law, Peter SchÖffer, testified against him. Before this lawsuit was finalized, Gutenberg had printed a Latin Bible that contained 42 lines of Scripture per page. This “42-line Bible” is known as the Gutenberg Bible. The press for the Bible, Gutenberg’s masterpiece, along with a second book containing only Psalms, was lost to Fust in the court case. The Psalter was published after the court case with no mention of Gutenberg; only Fust’s and SchÖffer’s names appear as the printers.

The competition pitting the vita activa against the vita contemplativa, which every age—including ours—must resolve anew, generated a spate of writings engaging with the mixed legacy of classical and medieval Christian attitudes towards the cultivation of knowledge for its own sake. My first chapter traces the discourse of intellectual labor as leisure from the Aristotelian concept of schole through its transformations in the writings of Cicero, Seneca, Petrarch, and Erasmus. I discuss humanists’ attempts to draw upon traditions of monastic exemption and classical political exemption in order to add cachet and legibility to their “uselessness.” In doing so, I address the difficulties, both ideological and logistical, of integrating intellectual labor into an economic system. Chapter 2 explores the creation of an intellectual realm defined against both the (masculinized) public sphere and the (feminized) domestic sphere in More’s Utopia.

    Humanists and Europe Printers: new cultural actors in Europe beginning in the late fifteenth century Catherine KIKUCHI ABSTRACT Printing was born in Germany with the production of the Gutenberg Bible, although printers set up shop across all of Europe beginning in the first decades of the century. They specialized, organized, and collaborated with merchants and bookshops. This new industry was particularly concentrated in merchant cities and university towns. Their editorial strategies sought to reach an increasingly broader audience which was not limited to persons of letters, although important printers worked with the Humanists for the diffusion of high quality revised editions. Their collaboration involved ancient texts, such as the Greek editions of Aldus Manutius, as well as religious texts, the Bible in particular. Printing was thus a driver of religious and intellectual renewal, but was also suspected of conveying harmful and heretical ideas; with the Reformation and Counter-Reformation, printers were increasingly controlled by political and religious authorities, a control that some of them were able to circumvent. The invention and diffusion of printing The birth of printing in Europe is dated as 1452, when Johann Gutenberg produced the 42-line Bible in Mainz with the help of Peter Schöffer and funding from Johann Fust. This invention takes its place in the long-term history of technology, stretching from Chinese and Korean printing methods to engraved Bibles for the poor in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The true change with Gutenberg was not so much the press itself, but the use of movable type. Furthermore, the success of printing was also due to its connection with important merchants who invested in this new art, such as Johann Fust.

(2.1.505)1 Mephostophilis truthfully answers Faustus' inquiry, ''Hell hath no limits" (2.1.510), but Faustus rejects this as "trifles, and meere old wives Tales" (2.1.524). Failing to recognize true information, Faustus requests sensual gratification in the form of a wife. The devil can only provide a woman devil (he cannot deal in the Christian sacrament of marriage) and Faustus is again unsatisfied. Critics of Doctor Faustus have been quick to underline the point: Faustus receives very little in exchange for his soul. But few critics have noted the way in which the demon assuages Faustus' disappointment; he does it with a gift: a book which will allow the doctor to control the weather and call up armoured guards. Faustus promises to keep the tome "as chary as my life" (2.1.551), but he is not entirely satisfied; he wants another book: "Yet faine would I have a booke wherein I might beholde al spels and incantations, that I might raise up spirits when I please" (2.1.551.01- 02). Mephostophilis replies that this information is also in the book he holds in his hand, and the devil turns to the appropriate page. Frustrated, Faustus asks for yet another book that will show "al characters of planets of the heavens" (2.1.551.04-05).

DE FUST A FAUST Manuel Álvarez Junco Universidad Complutense de Madrid [email protected] Resumen La invención de la imprenta está unida a la historia de Johann Fust, socio de Gutenberg, acusado de brujería al descubrirse su poder de multiplicar biblias por un medio hasta entonces impensable. La relación del nombre Fust con Faust parece ser el origen del mito que hará famoso Goethe. Aquí se realiza una reflexión, a partir de este suceso, sobre la suspicaz recepción que una civilización suele realizar con los ingenios nuevos; cómo se puede percibir cualquier creación inusitada, cómo se rechaza o cómo se acepta. Se aborda concretamente la analogía de los problemas de integración de la imprenta en el siglo XV con la recepción hoy de las nuevas tecnologías en nuestra sociedad. En particular, la amenaza que siente el mundo del libro en sus esencias a causa de la electrónica. Abstract The invention of the printing press is linked to the history of Gutenberg partner, Johann Fust, accused of witchcraft when he was considered to be capable to multiply Bibles by unknown means. Fust relationship with Faust name could be the origin of the myth that Goethe made famous. From this event, a reflection is made on the suspicious reception that a society often does with new inventions; how any unusual creation is accepted or rejected. This paper addresses the analogy of integration problems of printing press in the fifteen century with the ones we have today with new technologies getting in our daylife. Particularly the threat felt by the book world in its essences and foundation because of electronics.

The purpose of this paper is to prove that this is not quite true. Our view is that within the Fust-Gutenberg-Schoeffer society, Gutenberg was in fact the ‘metallurgist’ who worked under Schoeffer’s guidance and that it was Schoeffer who ruled, supervised and was in control of both the aesthetic criteria in bibliographic products and the industrial process involved. To prove this hypothesis, the starting point is set on the calligraphic principles and the interplay between area and stroke governing the Textur gothic script. Textur was used in the printing of the 42-line Bible and it was here that all criteria of proportion and harmony which will rule the typographic art to this day were set for the first time. Therefore it can be asserted that the graphic industry was born and developed not because of a technical innovation but because of the XVth century definition of the graphic designer role as the sole responsible for the industrial process. 1 PETER SCHÖFFER, FIRST DESIGNER IN BOOK INDUSTRY 1. In this thesis I present data from a large sample of Australian films showing that returns are consistently poor even for ‘hit’ films.
