Tarkastelen modernin edistysuskon läpimurtoa aatehistoriallisesti, kirjallisuuden ja poliittisen ajattelun kolmen keskeisen hahmon kautta: Christopher Marlowen näytelmä tohtori Faustuksesta, Sir Francis Baconin Uusi Atlantis -utopia sekä yhteisomistukseen pohjautuva Gerrard Winstanleyn poliittinen ohjelma heijastavat uuden ajattelun keskeisimpiä vallankumouksellisia ulottuvuuksia koko kulttuuriin ja länsimaiseen ajattelutapaan. Osoitan tutkielmassani, että kaikki nämä radikaalia edistysuskoa heijastavat läpimurrot pohjasivat keskeisesti nykykatsannossa irrationaalisilta vaikuttaviin, idealisoituihin käsityksiin kuvitellusta menneisyydestä, joiden innoittamana kirjoittajat loivat utooppiset tulevaisuuden visionsa. Alkemistiset ja okkulttiset aatteet sekä myyttiset historiantulkinnat ruokkivat aikakauden vaikutusvaltaisia visioita yhtä suuressa määrin kuin rationalistisesti ja eettisesti perustellut ohjelmat. Edistysuskon tai puhtaan järjen käsitteet, joko niiden rahvaanomaisissa tai akateemisen mahtipontisissa muodoissaan, selittävät vain kapeasti todellisia aatehistoriallisia ilmiöitä. Länsimaisen edistysuskon unohdetut tai vaietut irrationaaliset perustat ovat heijastuneet seuraavina vuosisatoina yhä uusina inkarnaatioina – joskus lievempinä, eksentrisen harmittomina ilmiöinä, joskus vaikutusvaltaisina liikkeinä, jotka ovat järisyttäneet maailmaa. Kommunistinen ja kapitalistinen maailmanjärjestys voivat esimerkiksi löytää itselleen eksoottisia ennaltakävijöitä ja ennakkotapauksia. Amerikan Yhdysvallat luotiin laajalti vapaamuurarillisen mytologian innoittamana, ja ”tieteellisen sosialismin” eräänä perusideana oli ihanne omistusyhteiskuntaa edeltäneestä, enemmän tai vähemmän paratiisinomaisesta primitiivisestä kommunismista. Voimme vielä internet-aikakautenakin – tai kenties erityisesti juuri nyt – havaita, että myyttiset inspiraation lähteet ovat edelleen kanssamme, niin hyvässä kuin pahassakin. Fantasian innoittamat roolipelaajat voivat olla pelkkä huvin lähde niin itselleen kuin ulkopuolisillekin, kun taas ISIS-terrorijärjestö voi ottaa itsensä kirjaimellisen kuolemanvakavasti ja pakottaa muunkin maailman tekemään niin. Se joka ymmärtää menneisyyttä, voi hallita tulevaisuutta, tai ainakin elää tyydyttävämpää elämää nykyhetkessä. INTRODUCTION The Enlightenment and the concept of progress form the backbone of modern Western civilization, and often this ideology takes the form of over-simplified faith in linear, clear-cut process from ignorance and obscurity to brighter and better things. In this thesis, I will approach the birth of modernity through the prism of three English sources of early modern era – the famous play about Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe, the utopian vision of Sir Francis Bacon, and the political program of Gerrard Winstanley. Through this three-fold approach, via the fields of art, science and politics, I study the roots of modern world, its sometimes not very “enlightened” ingredients, and the way the past dialectically influences us; sometimes we apparently have to draw inspiration from the past to be able to proceed further. These works show us the modern Western worldview as if in its eager childhood or adolescence, when the pre-rational whims and enthusiasms were not yet separated from a calm methodical approach. We today seem to be living in the resigned old age of Western culture, notably lacking such youthful idealism. It is a worthwhile endeavor to visit the original sources of our present notions to refresh our viewpoints. 1.1. Origins of the Modern Era – visions of progress and alchemy In a certain sense, the Renaissance Era (ca. 1350–1600) was like a "Coming of Age" time period for the modern Western civilization that we are now living in. Whether consciously or unconsciously, what most people today associate with the concept of "Western civilization" is a product of the so-called Enlightenment Era that began in the late 17th century, and grew to a fully articulated worldview in the 18th century. It is the Southern Oregon Historical Society's obligation to tell these stories, even if some people may not wish to hear or read about them. We do so here not with any intention to divide or demonize, rather to help our readers understand that we are all part of a greater whole, a common heritage, and that one does not heal and grow by denying an often conflict-ridden, complicated past.     FACES OF THE REFORMATION Gutenberg’s invention helped Johannes Gutenberg spread the ideas of the Reformation Born: 1395? | Mainz, Germany to the masses Died: 1468 | Mainz, Germany Could Johannes Gutenberg have known when he first conceived the idea of moveable type that it would contribute to the spread of the Reformation and the Renaissance and lead to the education of all levels of society? One might question his presence in the “Faces of the Reformation” series. But considering that his presses printed not only Luther’s 95 Theses but also the papal indulgences that sparked Luther’s polemic pen, it seems fitting that he should be included. Gutenberg was born about 1395 as the son of a metalsmith, and he became acquainted with the printing business at a very young age. His invention of the moveable type press made the mass production of books a reality that would change the world. By 1450, his new invention was operating. As with most new ideas of this scale, the road was not smooth. In 1446, Johann Fust, Gutenburg’s financial backer, won a lawsuit against him regarding repayment of the funds. Gutenberg’s employee and son-in-law, Peter SchÖffer, testified against him. Before this lawsuit was finalized, Gutenberg had printed a Latin Bible that contained 42 lines of Scripture per page. This “42-line Bible” is known as the Gutenberg Bible. The press for the Bible, Gutenberg’s masterpiece, along with a second book containing only Psalms, was lost to Fust in the court case. The Psalter was published after the court case with no mention of Gutenberg; only Fust’s and SchÖffer’s names appear as the printers.

In particular, I will argue that when the characters in Marlowe’s and Shakespeare’s tragedies fail to find solace in acts that model reformed devotional practices, they eventually suffer the strange but dramatically engaging consequences of their tragic passions like despair, hatred, jealousy, fear, and rage. This dissertation, then, will bridge the turn to religion and affect studies as a means of arguing that early modern tragedy was consumed with attracting, and sustaining, the dramatic attention of the audience. While it is not possible to say, with any finality, why tragedies hook an audience's attention, it is possible to suggest how Marlowe's and Shakespeare's tragedies used the passions generated by the failure of model devotional acts as a means of capturing and sustaining the attention of the audience.

(DF 2.1.83–5)1 From the mid-eighteenth century when interest in Doctor Faustus revived, critical attention on the play has largely focused on what may be termed its metaphysical concerns. Is Marlowe challenging conventional Christian perspectives on hell and heaven, or does his play ultimately conform with them? Is Faustus a tragic hero or a misguided sinner? Though scholarship on Doctor Faustus has increasingly complicated issues surrounding the origin and status of the play’s two main versions, ideas of what may be termed high seriousness have dominated debate about its content. For both readers of a text and spectators at performances, attention is commonly concen- trated on those scenes that engage most thoroughly with a tragic dimension. The scenes of farce attract much less attention. But what type of play en- gaged early spectators? How might Doctor Faustus have been performed in the theatres of Elizabethan England? This chapter seeks to re-examine the modern preoccupation with Faustus as metaphysical tragedy by think- ing about it in the cultural milieu from which it first arose. Interestingly, many of the issues raised by the place of the stage in early modern London still seem to resonate strangely within current critical debates about Doctor Faustus. At the start of the Reformation in England, the new Protestants celebrated players along with printers and preachers as crucial conduits through which the reform movement could spread its ideas.2 By the 1580s, though, some of the more strident elements within the now dominant Protestant Church of England orchestrated a series of pamphlet attacks on the London theatres as sinful places that directly conflicted with the efforts of the godly to win souls to religion.

    Biliana Kassabova History of Political Thought Workshop December 4, 2017 Blanqui’s note Nov. 23, 1848 Blanqui between Myth and Archives: Revolution, Dictatorship, and Education This piece, very much a work in progress, aims to make sense of the revolutionary ideas and actions of Louis-Auguste Blanqui. It complicates our ideas of political thought regarding revolution in the nineteenth century, by arguing that the binary of centralized versus popular revolution needs to be revised. It is part of a larger project on concepts of revolutionary leadership in France from the French Revolution of 1789 until the Paris Commune of 1871. Within this historical trajectory, Blanqui is an interpreter of 18th century ideas into 19th century contexts, a political thinker and actor who plays a key role in the various reformulations of the revolutionary tradition. 1848 does not enjoy a stellar reputation among historians of France. The revolution of February that year saw the overthrow of the last king of France, followed by the establishment of a new French republic. This republic, however, lasted for only three years, brought little and short-lived social change, remained rather conservative, though was also laden with bitter parliamentary strife, and ended through a coup d’état that inaugurated a new authoritarian régime, a Second Empire with Napoleon III at its head. To add insult to injury, even the attempts at establishing a viable parliamentary republican system were famously seen by political observers and participants from 2 almost all parts of the political spectrum as derivative, incompetent, and worse yet – laughable. “There have been more mischievous revolutionaries than those of 1848, but I doubt if there have been any stupider,”1 quipped Alexis de Tocqueville in his posthumously published Recollections.

The competition pitting the vita activa against the vita contemplativa, which every age—including ours—must resolve anew, generated a spate of writings engaging with the mixed legacy of classical and medieval Christian attitudes towards the cultivation of knowledge for its own sake. My first chapter traces the discourse of intellectual labor as leisure from the Aristotelian concept of schole through its transformations in the writings of Cicero, Seneca, Petrarch, and Erasmus. I discuss humanists’ attempts to draw upon traditions of monastic exemption and classical political exemption in order to add cachet and legibility to their “uselessness.” In doing so, I address the difficulties, both ideological and logistical, of integrating intellectual labor into an economic system.
