Ibi Et Cor Tuum: the Twin Perils of Studium and Otium in English Renaissance Intellectual Culture Ibi et cor tuum: The Twin Perils of Studium and Otium in English Renaissance Intellectual Culture By Gertrude Obi A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Joanna Picciotto, Chair Professor James Grantham Turner Professor Timothy Hampton Spring 2016 1 Abstract Ibi et cor tuum: The Twin Perils of Studium and Otium in English Renaissance Intellectual Culture by Gertrude Obi Doctor of Philosophy in English University of California, Berkeley Professor Joanna Picciotto, Chair My dissertation, “Ibi et cor tuum: The Twin Perils of Studium and Otium in English Renaissance Intellectual Culture,” investigates the ways in which the temptations posed by intellectual labor were conceptualized and navigated by English Renaissance humanists. The competition pitting the vita activa against the vita contemplativa, which every age—including ours—must resolve anew, generated a spate of writings engaging with the mixed legacy of classical and medieval Christian attitudes towards the cultivation of knowledge for its own sake. My first chapter traces the discourse of intellectual labor as leisure from the Aristotelian concept of schole through its transformations in the writings of Cicero, Seneca, Petrarch, and Erasmus. I discuss humanists’ attempts to draw upon traditions of monastic exemption and classical political exemption in order to add cachet and legibility to their “uselessness.” In doing so, I address the difficulties, both ideological and logistical, of integrating intellectual labor into an economic system. Chapter 2 explores the creation of an intellectual realm defined against both the (masculinized) public sphere and the (feminized) domestic sphere in More’s Utopia. On one hand, the humanist who retreats into the intellectual realm runs the risk of opting out of his responsibilities as breadwinner of the oikos without providing any social utility; on the other hand, otium litteratum can be used to serve public as well as domestic interests. Luisa Sigea’s Duarum virginum colloquium de vita aulica et privata (Dialogue of Two Young Girls on Courtly Life and Private Life) treats the activa-contemplativa question from the female perspective; I read this document against the Dialogue of Counsel that takes place in book 1 of Utopia. Chapter 3 on Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus focuses on what happens when the ends of learning are perverted for personal gain. I argue that the sin Marlowe is most interested in is Faustus's failure as a humanist; in both the production and consumption of knowledge, in the realms of both scholarly engagement and academic collegiality, Faustus is hobbled by his solipsism above all. 2 Chapter 4 examines the challenges that John Milton’s Epitaphium Damonis poses to the assumptions about the connective power of letters and learning that underpinned humanist conceptions of the respublica litteraria (Republic of Letters): relying too much on virtual communities for companionship runs the risk of devolving into solipsism. Milton finds a potential solution to this problem in the unlikeliest of places—Catholic Italy. My discussion concludes with the archetypal example of the perils of intellectual labor—the Fall of Man story as depicted by Milton in Paradise Lost. Milton, extending the work of predecessors in the hexameral tradition such as Guillaume du Bartas and Francis Bacon, places intellectual life at the center of his Paradise; accordingly, his Adam and Eve struggle with the same issues that confounded contemporary humanists—questions of solitude vs. sociability, public good vs. private interest, embodied vs. virtual relationships, and, perhaps most important in Paradise Lost, the role of women in intellectual life.     Inverting the Metaphor of Slavery and Freedom in Cicero Particularly in the wake of Caesar’s ascension Cicero appeals regularly to the ideas of freedom and slavery in a civic context. Caesar’s dominion imposes on the Romans a kind of joint political slavery, restricting their thoughts and actions. But Cicero uses the metaphor to invert typical understandings of what slavery and freedom mean. Rather than forcing others to serve him, Caesar instead prohibits Romans from serving others, or, more specifically, from having a social environment in which to offer kindness (beneficia) to others. This rhetorical inversion ultimately aligns slavery with self-focused behavior and freedom with behavior oriented toward others. In making this inversion Cicero advocates a very particular kind of free citizenship that cannot exist under any form of autocrat, no matter how good or skilled he is. Cicero’s championing of liberty reaches its climax in the tenth Philippic, where he decries the lifeless lot of the slave and states unequivocally that death is to be preferred to slavery. In the short window between Caesar’s death and his own, Cicero speaks as one freed from the civic slavery of Caesar’s rule and apprehensive about further Roman autocracy on the horizon. He juxtaposes other nations’ willingness to suffer slavery in order to avoid pain with the Roman’s preference for virtue and honor. The comparison revisits one of the prominent themes of Cicero’s in his dialogues, namely the priority of virtue and the un-Romanness of those who prefer a pleasure/pain-oriented philosophy, viz.

    FACES OF THE REFORMATION Gutenberg’s invention helped Johannes Gutenberg spread the ideas of the Reformation Born: 1395? | Mainz, Germany to the masses Died: 1468 | Mainz, Germany Could Johannes Gutenberg have known when he first conceived the idea of moveable type that it would contribute to the spread of the Reformation and the Renaissance and lead to the education of all levels of society? One might question his presence in the “Faces of the Reformation” series. But considering that his presses printed not only Luther’s 95 Theses but also the papal indulgences that sparked Luther’s polemic pen, it seems fitting that he should be included. Gutenberg was born about 1395 as the son of a metalsmith, and he became acquainted with the printing business at a very young age. His invention of the moveable type press made the mass production of books a reality that would change the world. By 1450, his new invention was operating. As with most new ideas of this scale, the road was not smooth. In 1446, Johann Fust, Gutenburg’s financial backer, won a lawsuit against him regarding repayment of the funds. Gutenberg’s employee and son-in-law, Peter SchÖffer, testified against him. Before this lawsuit was finalized, Gutenberg had printed a Latin Bible that contained 42 lines of Scripture per page. This “42-line Bible” is known as the Gutenberg Bible. The press for the Bible, Gutenberg’s masterpiece, along with a second book containing only Psalms, was lost to Fust in the court case. The Psalter was published after the court case with no mention of Gutenberg; only Fust’s and SchÖffer’s names appear as the printers.

    Vita di Francesco Petrarca (1304-1374) Francesco Petrarca nacque ad Arezzo il 20 luglio 1304. Il padre ser Petracco, era un notaio fiorentino, esule per ragioni politiche. Nel 1334 ser Petracco si trasferì con la famiglia a Pisa e di là, nell'anno seguente, ad Avignone, dove il papa aveva da poco trasportato la sua sede e la sua corte. Per la difficoltà di trovare un alloggio ad Avignone, il piccolo Francesco con la madre Eletta Carigiani ed il fratello Gherardo furono sistemati nella vicina Carpentas; là nel 1312 il poeta cominciò lo studio della grammatica, della retorica e della dialettica col maestro Convenevole da Prato. Nel 1316 il padre lo mandò a studiare legge a Monpellier e poi dal 1320 al 1326 a Bologna; ma il poeta trascurò ben presto gli studi giuridici per dedicarsi alla lettura dei classici. Tornato ad Avignone nel 1326, dopo la morte del padre, Francesco Petrarca frequentò per un certo periodo il mondo elegante e gaudente della città, dove era assai ricercato per il suo spirito e la sua intelligenza. Assai importante in questo periodo fu l'incontro del poeta con una gentildonna di nome Laura nella chiesa di Santa Chiara, il 6 aprile 1327. I tentativi di dare un'identità precisa a Laura sono stati finora vani, e il poeta stesso ci dà di lei un'immagine vaga; è sufficiente quindi ritenere che l'amore per Laura fu un episodio reale nella vita del Petrarca. Frattanto il poeta abbracciò lo stato ecclesiastico (soltanto gli ordini minori) probabilmente con l'intento di procurarsi un'esistenza onorevole e tranquilla.

Megan DeVore Megan DeVore is Associate Professor of Church History and Early Christian Studies in the Department of Theology, School of Undergraduate Studies at Colorado Christian University, Lakewood, Colorado. She earned her PhD specializing in Early Christianity from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David in the United Kingdom. Dr. DeVore is a member of the North American Patristic Society, the American Society of Church History, the Society of Biblical Literature, the Evangelical Theological Society, and the American Classical League. Around the year 401, a curious incident transpired near Roman Carthage. A cluster of nomadic long-haired monks had recently wandered into the area, causing a stir among locals. These monks took the gospel quite seriously; that is, they lived very literally one part of a gospel, “Consider the birds of the air, for they neither sow, nor reap, nor gather into barns … Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they labor not” (Matt 6:26-29). They were apparently not only shunning all physical labor on behalf of medita- tive prayer, but they were also (at least according to Augustine’s depiction of the situation) imposing such unemployment upon others, namely local barbers. In response, Augustine penned a unique pamphlet. It takes the form of a retort, but as it unfolds, a commentary on the dignity and duty of work emerges—manual labor, in itself significant, as well as “the labors of our occupation” (labores occupationem nostrarum) and “labor according to our rank and duty” (pro nostro gradu et officio laborantibus, De Op.

Ioan Cuza” University of Iași Abstract:With one devil that is dark, ugly and frightening and another devil that is a soft-spoken stranger in a handsome buggy, and from one ŖFaustŗ that is a horrible wretched man to another one who is a decent but unlucky fellow, the Americans (i.e. Washington IrvingŕŖThe Devil and Tom Walkerŗ and Stephen Vincent BenetŕŖThe Devil and Daniel Websterŗ) projected the old German legend onto the new capitalistic patterns of the New World. The famous contract no longer includes provisions regarding unlimited knowledge, but stipulates only the possibility of accumulating wealth rapidly and also allows using the devil for the new Faustsř evil purposes (like getting rid of a termagant wife or even having the devil himself punished by jury trial in the end). So, before we notice the differencesŕwhich are not few and also highly significantŕlet us highlight the similarities, which are first given by their common source/s and then by the fact that they are susteined by certain historical(-legendary) antecedents. Before even reading them one can conveniently guess that the legend of Faustŕand the various other Fausts derived from itŕis their common inspiration.
