Friday mornings through Sundays are reserved for group tours of St. Petersburg and for independent travel. The tour package covers guided tours of main tourist attractions in and around St. Petersburg as well as transportation to and from the museums in some cases. On the free days students are welcome to explore the city on their own. City Tour The downtown area of Saint Petersburg is rich in history, culture and architectural treasures. Touring the city by bus is one of the best ways to get acquainted with the city and its landmarks.

The founding of St. Petersburg can be traced back to May 27, 1703 when Peter the Great constructed a fortress on Hare Island along the re-claimed lands along the Neva River.
The fortress surrounds the Peter and Paul Cathedral, the burial place of all the Russian Emperors and Empresses from Peter the Great to Nicholas II. Spilled Blood Cathedral
Built on the spot where Emperor Originally the city’s main church and the Alexander II was assassinated in March largest cathedral in Russia, St. Isaac’s was 1881,the Church of the Savior on Blood, or built between 1818 and 1858. One of the most beautiful and popular ways of viewing the city is from the water. A canal tour will give you an entirely different perspective of the city as the beauty of the architecture is admired from water level. Peterhof The inspiration for one of St. Petersburg’s most famous and popular visitor attractions, Peterhof, was Versailles. Located in the city of Petrodvorets just outside of St. Petersburg, Peterhof was constructed by orders from Peter the Great.
Today the park is actually a series of two parks, an upper and a lower park divided by the Grand Palace. Catherine’s Palace - Named after Catherine I, the wife of Peter the Great, Catherine’s Palace Pushkin was originally commissioned in 1717 as a modest two-story structure.
The most noted room remains the Amber Room, which was originally used as a study.
The Great Hall, also known as the Hall of Light, measures nearly 1,000 square meters, and occupies the full width of the palace so that there are superb views on either side. Hermitage – Winter Originally the Winter Palace Palace for the czars, the Hermitage is a world-class museum that features more than three million works including the largest collection of paintings in the world.
If you were to spend a minute looking at each exhibit in the Hermitage, you would need 11 years to see them all. Moscow A special feature of the program is an optional four-day excursion to the capital city of Moscow. The trip begins with an overnight train ride followed by a bus tour of the city. Students discover the treasures of Red Square with guided tours of the Kremlin including its museums and churches. Moscow gives students a different perspective on Russian history and culture. A visit to the world famous Russian circus and a walking our of the city are also included. The cost for the excursion is an additional $500.
