Jeff said it was the worst five minutes of his life, three times a week. Jeff survived open mic night and began working as an opening act, that's the person who sleeps on the couch, in the living room, at the comedy condo and gets paid the least. Jeff was an opening act for five years. Jeff became a feature and eventually a headliner. Before Jeff Love was a comedian, he worked as an Activities Director for an active senior community. When Love left his warm, fuzzy job, for his first comedy tour, the residents made him promise to do senior shows also. Now that Love is a senior citizen himself, he performs 200 senior dates a year. Since 1990, Jeff has performed a G-rated comedy show called “Laughter IS The Best Medicine”, written especially for an active retirement community. http://www.epworthvilla.org/events/ Click link for past issues of Epworth Villa Happenings 1 WOMEN’S COFFEE WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14th REDBUD ROOM COFFEE, 10:00 A.M., PROGRAM 10:30 A.M. MEN ARE INVITED TO ATTEND! “Hunger in the Schools” seems to be a surprising topic for our metro area. However, it is a real fact! Speaker Lisa Chastain has run the food pantry in Summit Middle School (just down the street from Epworth Villa) for 7 years. Believe it or not, Edmond does have a poverty problem and there are children going home from school hungry. Lisa explains, “We pack a bag each week for these kids to have food to get them through the weekend, so that they will be able to focus on academics on Monday instead of their hunger pangs. Last year, I started a food pantry at Santa Fe High School as about 100 of our kids who graduate out of middle school were being sent off to high school just as hungry but with no food help.” Lisa’s mission is to make sure these kids know the world does believe in them and that they won’t be hungry on her watch! 2 EPWORTH VILLA BOOK CLUB WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14TH 1:30 PM JOE WHITE LIVING ROOM Everyone is welcome to join us for book club. The passage has prompted two well-known songs over the years. One is the African American slave spiritual “We are Climbing Jacob's Ladder.” The other is the hymn ”Nearer My God to Thee.” The latter is perhaps best known as the song the musicians on board the Titanic purportedly began to play as the ship plunged into the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean on that tragic April night in 1912. Much of the content of this hymn is based on the incident found in today's text. While the words and melody of this hymn are comforting to hear or sing, we must remember that Jacob's circumstances in Genesis 28 were very uncertain. He was on the run from his angry brother, Esau. Jacob's self-exile had him traveling to a place he had never been and moving beyond the territory of the promised land for the first time. When would he be able to return home? What did the future hold? Jacob came to realize that what he was leaving behind did not include the blessing and protection of God. God had his future well in hand. Burrel McNaught will teach this lesson and Pam Oster will bless us with her favorite hymns. VESPERS THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15TH 3:30 PM BRILL CHAPEL Vespers speaker will be Rev. Tracy L. Wilson, Retired, Disciples of Christ Clergy. Music by the Villa Voices: “ Thanksgiving Hymn” NO VESPERS ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 22ND VESPERS THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 29TH 3:30 PM BRILL CHAPEL Vespers speaker will be Rev. INQUIRING MINDS MONDAY, NOVEMBER 19TH WELLNESS CLASSROOM 7:14 PM THE STORY OF IRELAND Mona Mae Waymire, Moderator The series aims to explore Irish history using the historical facts and evidence while charting the origin and impact of the numerous myths that have been passed off as history in the past. Key to this approach is relating developments in Ireland to events and changes in Europe and the world at large as the centuries progress. Episode Three: The Age of Revolution Spanning the Ulster Plantation to the Act of Union, this is an era that sees Ireland take center stage in a much wider European conflict. This episode will also investigate Gaelic life and culture during the eighteenth century through poetry, music and the rise of a Roman Catholic middle class. SOCIAL SECURITY SCAM ALERT!! LLOYD* & ROBERT L. SUMMERS** ABSTRACT Collective efforts among governments and regional organizations is a vital part of the fight againstpiracy that represents a security threat to all nation- states with respect to freedom to navigate the high seas. This paper provides a concise overview ofpiracy, contemporarymaritime drug laws, and cases among the circuit courts to illustrate the procedural concerns that affect fundamental constitutional principles of jurisdiction. A possible solution to existing substantive and procedural due process issues is establishment of a regional judicial institution with broadpowers to preside over criminalprosecutions that include maritime crimes. The suggestion may be a viable means to resolve some concerns with respect to jurisdictionalprinciples, regional stability, and the need for a comprehensive, coordinated response within the Western Hemisphere. Establishing a tribunal to.preside over enforcement practices alleviates dependency on the existing legalframeworkthat may notfully resolve jurisdictionalissues associated with maritime drug trafficking. In addition, a regionaltribunal minimizes the needfor the UnitedStates tofunction as the only viable, sovereign nation-state in the Americas to ensure that pirates engaged in illicit trades are not roaming the high seas with impunity. * J.S.D., St.
