Language list English Language of Material English, German, French Context Historical Note Founded in Paris in 1946; a socialist but non-aligned organization, successor of the prewar Socialist Youth International (SYI/SJI); one of the three fraternal organizations of the Socialist International (SI); members were youth organizations of social democratic parties and some leftist student organizations; acted as a counterpart to the communist controlled World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY) in Budapest and the International Union of Students (IUS) in Prague; convinced of the right of peoples to self-determination it supported liberation struggles in various countries; also involved in agitation for peace and disarmament, and in active solidarity work; in the 1950s the position of the non-European affiliates became more prominent; in the 1970s and 1980s contacts between the IUSY and the WFDY were established and gradually intensified with disarmament as a common goal; from 1954 its seat has been in Vienna. The focus in this MA-paper is the Swedish Social Democratic Memoir as a rhetoric genre. The main primary material is memoirs of the pioneer August Palm (1849–1922), the father of the nation Tage Erlander (1901–1985) and the political leader Göran Persson (1949–), published 1905, 1972–82 and 2007, respectively. The general aim is to find out what is the driving power of the memoirs and, more specifically, to shed light on the images of the party history and the history of the welfare state. The method is a comparative analysis of these texts. The overarching rhetoric of Social Democratic Memoirs relate to a general ideological theme corresponding to the progression from darkness to light.

    Shaping a Vision A History of the Party of European Socialists 1957 - 2002 Simon Hix Urs Lesse It is my pleasure to mark the 10th anniversary of the Party of European Socialists by presenting this history of cooperation between socialist and social democratic parties in Europe over the last 45 years. We hope that it will be a useful reference work for party representatives, journalists and academics. Demand for information about our roots and development has increased considerably since pub- lication of the first edition of the history of the Confederation of Socialist Parties of the European Community – later, the Party of European Socialists – in 1995. This update of our history is set out in two parts: ∏ 1957 – 1994 by Simon Hix, PES trainee and student at the European University Institute Florence: Brussels 1995 ∏ 1945 – 2002 by Urs Lesse, PES trainee and student at the University of Aachen: Brussels, 2002 Both authors spent many months in the PES secretariat researching their material. However, their work is in no way an ‘official’ or ‘authorised’ interpretation of the development of PES party coop- eration over the years.The views expressed are first and foremost those of the authors themselves, who had the necessary freedom to interpret the information they gathered. The character of each contribution is different but together they give a picture of the remarkable development of the Confederation and later the PES over recent decades. PES party cooperation is still too weak in the light of political integration within the European Union. Yet the analysis makes clear that the PES has been able to make its mark on EU development.

    FOCUS Facing the challenges ahead On 20-23 June the Socialist International held its seventeenth congress in Lima with the theme of 'Peace and economic solidarity' at the centre of the stage. This issue of Focus carries edited versions of the contributions by Willy Brandt, Kalevi Sorsa and Michael Manley, and thus provides a stimulating insight into the debate which took place in Lima. Such is the nature of the dual challenge facing democratic socialists. Discussions round the theme of 'one world', however, were not exclusively limited to the need for a new international order based on peace and economic cooperation. The last section of the Manifesto of Lima emphasises and dwells at length on the need for the transformation of the Socialist International 'from a male-centred organisation into an integrated one, giving justice to women all over the world'. That too is a major challenge. And in facing up to the new challenges, many at the Lima Congress evoked the memory of Olaf Palme, the late leader of'the Swedish Social Democrats.
