The focus in this MA-paper is the Swedish Social Democratic Memoir as a rhetoric genre. The main primary material is memoirs of the pioneer August Palm (1849–1922), the father of the nation Tage Erlander (1901–1985) and the political leader Göran Persson (1949–), published 1905, 1972–82 and 2007, respectively. The general aim is to find out what is the driving power of the memoirs and, more specifically, to shed light on the images of the party history and the history of the welfare state. The method is a comparative analysis of these texts. The overarching rhetoric of Social Democratic Memoirs relate to a general ideological theme corresponding to the progression from darkness to light. Each memoir emerges from some special exigence (L.F. Bitzer, C.R. Miller), that is, an immediate need – in these cases actualized by the current position of the party and the rhetorical demands on a party member’s text commenting on that situation. Central questions are: What motivates the memoirs and how do the memoirs relate to what motivates them? The exigence which the memoirs of August Palm seem to emerge from is how the labour movement can be mobilized in the fight for the right to vote. By creating himself as a popular hero and pioneer Palm can inspire and raise the working class in that fight. The exigence which the memoirs of Tage Erlander seem to respond to is that the social democracy is challenged both from left and right during the oil crisis and depression. He writes a success story about the building of the welfare state. However, the rhetorical situation change, and so does the rhetorical strategy in later volumes. In the memoirs of Göran Persson the new liberal social democratic politics become a part of the party tradition and the progression from darkness to light. This rhetorical strategy suggests that the memoirs emerge from an exigence where many grassroot-members point out Persson as responsible for the crisis policy in the 1990’s. 2 Innehåll SYFTE OCH The Swedish agricultural colony on the bank of the river Dnipro, not far from its fall into the Black Sea, is the only Scandinavian settlement in Eurasia. The church of Gammalsvenskby was the first Lutheran parish in the Azov and Black Sea territories. It functioned from 1782 to 1929. They owned the plots they cultivated and as foreign colonists they had a considerable degree of self- government in the Russian Empire and Soviet Ukraine.1 Recent research shows that the colonists of Gammalsvenskby had a high degree of ethnic self-consciousness. They considered themselves Swedes and spoke Swedish fluently in its dialect and standard form.2 Since the middle of the nineteenth century the inhabitants of the village were in continuous contact with the Kingdom of Sweden and ethnic Swedes of the Grand Duchy of Finland. Bellahs theory of civil religion, within a Swedish societal context. Bellahs theory was designed in, and influenced by American culture. Therefore, the “translation” of Bellahs theory does not come without problems. A methodological discussion concludes with methods focusing on national self- conceptions. Through this method, the Swedish social democratic notion of the “folkhem” can be related to the notions included by “the American way of life”. The “folkhem” as well as “the American way of life” includes ideas of the nation, made up by specific historical events, in both nations. Those ideas are vital parts of the national self conception in both nations. Historical premises are constantly reborn through the rhetorical reinterpretation, and through the eyes of Bellah, the notion of the folkhem creates a national embracive, ethical value system. The notion of the folkhem still is viable in the Swedish society. Contemporary use of the folkhem- notion is discerned by the threats of globalization and neoliberlismic tendencies. På 40 år växte den, huvudsakligen genom honom, från intet till en folkmajoritet. I sin ungdom inspärrades han som en förbrytare på Långholmen för sin samhällskritiska verk- samhet. På sin ålderdom stod han tre gånger i spetsen för socialdemokratiska regeringar. Vilken väldig samhällsomdaning hade icke skett under denna tid och genom den rörelse han företrätt!     Nikolai Bukharin’s First Statement of Confession in the Lubianka1 Grover Furr (USA) and Vladimir Bobrov (Russia) Nikolai Ivanovich Bukharin (1888-1938) remains one of the most puzzling figures of Soviet history. Although his rehabilitation took place in 1988 to this day not a single piece of historical evidence supporting this verdict has ever been published. All the documents published during the period of the “Bukharin Boom” of the 1990s in one way or another touch on the question of the accusations against him. But only in a single case — his letter to Joseph Stalin of December 10, 1937 — did Bukharin utter a determined “Not Guilty” to the crimes of which he was accused.     Förord Säkerhetstjänstkommissionen tillkom vid en tidpunkt då olika for- skare, framför allt historiker och statsvetare, inlett arbeten med projekt som låg nära kommissionens uppdrag. Flera av dessa pro- jekt hade påbörjats inom ramen för det forskningsprogram om svensk militär underrättelse- och säkerhetstjänst som Humanistisk- samhällsvetenskapliga forskningsrådet på regeringens uppdrag ut- lyst i februari 1998. Genom att anställa några av forskarna som ex- perter kunde kommissionen tillgodogöra sig deras kunskaper och kompetens och ge dem möjlighet att arbeta med fri tillgång till det relevanta källmaterialet. Resultatet av deras arbete publiceras som bilagor till kommissionens betänkande. Rapporterna har föredra- gits för och diskuterats i kommissionen. Författarna svarar dock själva för sakinnehållet. Det är med andra ord respektive författares analyser, tolkningar och slutsatser som presenteras i rapporterna. Vidare publiceras som bilagor till kommissionens betänkande ett antal rapporter som författats inom kommissionens sekretariat och av enskilda kommissionsledamöter.
