Serving until mid-2001 as the project co-ordinator, it gives me great pleasure that the study by Christopher Munthe Morgenstierne brings this Nordic undertaking to its completion.1 Studies on Denmark, Finland2, Norway3 and Sweden4 are now available. In addition, a companion volume of interviews—mainly with repre- sentatives from the Southern African liberation movements—has been pub- lished.5 Individually and as a group, from the early 1960s the Nordic countries played a prominent role in support of the national liberation struggles waged against colonialism and minority rule in Southern Africa. While the victorious movements of MPLA in Angola (1975), FRELIMO in Mozambique (1975), ZANU and ZAPU in Zimbabwe (1980), SWAPO in Namibia (1990) and ANC in South Africa (1994) were shunned by the West during the Cold War period as ‘Communist’ or ‘terrorist’, their legitimate demands for national self-deter- mination and democracy found an echo in the distant North. Often described as ‘Soviet-backed’, the less dramatic label of ‘Nordic-backed’ nationalist move- ments is empirically more accurate, particularly with regard to the non-military aspects of the struggles. This study on Denmark sheds further light on the Nor- dic involvement in the ‘Thirty Years’ War’ in Southern Africa which started in Angola in February 1961 and ended with the democratic elections in South Africa in April 1994. Initially inspired by a research proposal by the Harare-based Southern Africa Regional Institute for Policy Studies (SARIPS) on the the history of national liberation in Southern Africa, in mid-1994—shortly after the demise of apartheid in South Africa—the Nordic Africa Institute took the initiative to 1.     TREKKING OUTWARD A CHRONOLOGY OF MEETINGS BETWEEN SOUTH AFRICANS AND THE ANC IN EXILE 1983–2000 Michael Savage University of Cape Town May 2014 PREFACE In the decade preceding the dramatic February 1990 unbanning of South Africa’s black liberatory movements, many hundreds of concerned South Africans undertook to make contact with exile leaders of these organisations, travelling long distances to hold meetings in Europe or in independent African countries. Some of these “treks”, as they came to be called, were secret while others were highly publicised. The great majority of treks brought together South Africans from within South Africa and exile leaders of the African National Congress, and its close ally the South African Communist Party. Other treks involved meetings with the Pan Africanist Congress, the black consciousness movement, and the remnants of the Non-European Unity Movement in exile. This account focuses solely on the meetings involving the ANC alliance, which after February 1990 played a central role in negotiating with the white government of F.W. de Klerk and his National Party regime to bring about a new democratic order. Without the foundation of understanding established by the treks and thousands of hours of discussion and debate that they entailed, it seems unlikely that South Africa’s transition to democracy could have been as successfully negotiated as it was between 1990 and the first democratic election of April 1994. The following chronology focuses only on the meetings of internally based South Africans with the African National Congress (ANC) when in exile over the period 1983–1990. Well over 1 200 diverse South Africans drawn from a wide range of different groups in the non- governmental sector and cross-cutting political parties, language, educational, religious and community groups went on an outward mission to enter dialogue with the ANC in exile in a search to overcome the escalating conflict inside South Africa.

Murder in Paris, directed by Enver Samuel, is a political crime thriller that traces the motives for the assassination of anti-Apartheid activist, Dulcie September. The story travels from the heart of Paris in March 1988 to the pursuit of justice in 2021. This forensic documentary chronicles activist and investigative journalist Evelyn Groenink’s 30-year-long quest to get to the bottom of the murder of Dulcie September, the then Chief Representative of the African National Congress in France. The film traces the motives for September’s assassination while shedding some light on the actual course of the events, which seem to have more to do with the Apartheid regime’s close ties to the French weapons industry than with neutralising an ANC cadre.

    Helge J. Pedersen Denmark has a new government Nordea Research, 30 June 2015 Denmark has a new government with Lars Løkke Rasmussen of the Liberal Party as prime minister. After more than a week of negotiations between the Liberal Party and the other parties of the centre-right bloc, the Danish People’s Party, Liberal Alliance and the Conservative Party, it was clear that the parties were too far apart to form a broad coalition. Denmark is now led by a pure Liberal Party minority government comprising 17 ministries. Minority governments are by no means unusual. In fact most governments in Denmark have been minority governments. A one-party government is not uncommon either. But what is unusual is the fact that this is a pure Liberal Party government. The last time this happened was under the premiership of Poul Hartling (1973-75). It is also unusual that the prime minister is from the country’s third-largest party. The last time this happened was with the coalition comprising the Liberal Party, the Conservative Party and the Social Liberal Party (1968-71), when Hilmar Baunsgaard of the Social Liberals held the post as prime minister. Obviously, given the political realities, the new government must work with different partners among the parties in the new parliament to implement its policies. In this light it is no surprise that the new government has presented a broad platform (“Together for the future”). According to this, the new government’s key priorities can be summarised as follows: • More private sector jobs through a sound and responsible economic policy supporting growth and prosperity.

Instead, it was about the notion, and the emergence of, a new kind of welfare state in need of a moral legitimization of autonomy.

Without his driving will and dogged commitment to the principles of liberalism, especially his willingness to fight on when all seemed lost for liberalism in the apartheid state, the Progressive Party would have floundered. He led the Progressives out of the political wilderness in 1974, turned the PFP into the official opposition in 1977, and picked up the pieces after Frederik van Zyl Slabbert’s dramatic resignation as party leader in February 1986. As leader of the parliamentary opposition, despite the hounding of the National Party, he kept liberal democratic values alive, especially the ideal of incremental political change. Nelson Mandela described him as, “one of the architects of our democracy”.
