trotting is to regions where the risk of malaria is growing – South-East Asia, Oceania, Central America – quite apart from Africa, where the risk has traditionally been at its the highest. Dr Nigel Higson, chairman of the Primary Care Virology Group, an association of British GPs with a specific interest in infectious diseases, has warned that vacationers are becoming complacent as the numbers travelling to the less developed world increases: “Many people are now going to Thailand, Malaysia or South America, which are fairly high risk areas but were far too expensive for mass travel a few years ago.” Tens of millions of Europeans and Americans travel each year to regions where there is a potential risk of malarial outbreaks, but many fail to seek adequate health advice before they travel.

Covering all bases Even when the correct prophylactic is taken, too often people fail to remember to complete their course of tablets, which has to be taken after returning from a trip, as well as before and during it. Many countries, however, regularly issue reminders to travellers that it is essential to begin a course of preventative malaria treatment before travelling to parts of the world where the disease is rife, such as Africa, Central and South America, parts of Asia and the Middle East. British warnings had added urgency after five people who booked last-minute holidays to Gambia returned infected with malaria all requiring hospital treatment. Of the five, it transpired that three had not taken recommended preventative medication, while two had taken over-the-counter medication that was insufficient to prevent the onset of infection. Travel insurance policies do not usually refer to such diseases, but anybody failing to take medical advice before departure, after warnings to do so by travel agents or tour companies, would have little case for litigation if he or she subsequently suffered infection by not taking anti-malaria prophylactics. The most pressing need is for travellers not to underestimate risks of infection and follow medical advice appropriate to the area being visited. The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), which supports GlazoSmithKline’s Malaria Awareness Campaign, says that under its code of conduct, any affiliated agent must make clear to travellers any official A bloody pest medical advisory notice. A broad and most important question posed by Steve Manton, chief executive of M Consulting: Is travel insurance really a worthwhile line of business for insurers? Judging by the seemingly dwindling number of players in the UK market, perhaps not

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) reports that it has around 37 member companies that provide travel cover out of a total of 400 members – so it does not seem to be a popular sector. Indeed, the number of players is believed to be shrinking, although their dwindling number probably reflects industry consolidation as insurers swell in size, buying each other to provide the bulk they need to survive in today’s market, as well as players choosing to quit the travel game. Many of the larger players have slimmed down their travel offerings, leaving it as something to be offered direct, over the phone or via a website, but not pushing it through their brokers in the same way that they try to sell home or motor policies. Anyone looking at the travel market would assume the odds are stacked heavily against profitability for a large insurer that is up against new and stiff sources of competition, as well the pressure to reduce the burden of cost on what is still a relatively complicated product.

Keeping the cost down Russell Dadson, founding director of skiing and adventure sports specialist Snowcard, says: “The main players from the underwriting point of view seem to be shrinking back or pulling out. Whenever I meet other intermediaries, the complaint is that capacity is low and there aren’t carriers out there fighting for business.” Today, competition for insurers comes not only from the direct market – often the Internet for travel policies – but also from the likes of generate enough revenue to make it worthwhile.” then, an R&SA spokesperson sounded somewhat The ABI lobbied for all travel insurance to be FSA supermarkets, the Post Office (PO) and other This is a problem. tourists. Many travel policies include limited cover for accidental death but greater cover for medical treatment and repatriation. RMS estimated that total travel claims could reach $125 million, as a result of a large number of relatively small claims and a smaller number of large claims for medical costs. Again, for the insurer fighting it out for a share of the mass market, it is crucial to keep costs down and be available whenever the traveller is inclined to buy travel insurance. This is exactly the service that travel insurance specialist broker Travsure, owned by Kennet Insurance Brokers, offers.
