  • BISHOP SAVATIJE LJUBIBRATIĆ UNDER the AUSPICES of the REPUBLIC of VENICE (1687-1716)* 1. Trebinje Or Piva
doi: 10.19090/i.2016.27.106-119 UDC: 94(398)”1687/1716”:929 Ljubibratić S. ORIGINAL SCIENTIFIC PAPER Received: 23 March 2016 Accepted: 20 July 2016 MARINA MATIĆ Independent scientific Researcher Belgrade [email protected] BISHOP SAVATIJE LJUBIBRATIĆ UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE REPUBLIC OF VENICE (1687-1716)* Abstract: Using unpublished archive material, the text eliminates certain doubts regarding the personality of the Herzegovinian Bishop Savatije Ljubibratić. It sheds light on several decades of dilemmas about his Herzegovinian bishopric seat. Furthermore, it defines the time and circumstances of his moving to Boka Kotorska more precisely and more comprehensively, as well as his activities under the auspices of the Republic of Venice. Keywords: Bishop Savatije Ljubibratić, Piva, Venetian rule, Orthodox Christian identity, Boka Kotorska, 17th and 18th century. 1. Trebinje or Piva he northwestern part of Boka (Risan, Herceg-Novi) was historically and geographically connected with Herzegovina. Since Herceg-Novi remained the last T Turkish stronghold in Boka, its conquering was of primary strategic and political importance for the Venetians. With its conquest, the Venetians would have power over the entire Boka,1 opening their way to penetrating Herzegovina as well.2 For realizing their plans, they used Serbian clans in Herzegovina, raising their hopes that they would thus be 3 liberated from Turkish oppression and be under a kind of Christian dominion. The * This text is an original scientific paper and result of several years of investigation (field and archive) in the area of Boka Kotorska (Herceg-Novi) for the preparation of a doctoral dissertation defended in 2015. 1 Ever since the 15th century Boka Kotorska was divided into the southeastern (Venetian) and northwestern (Turkish) part.

  • Branca Ivanić Pilgrimage in Medieval Serbia and "Proskynetaria" : Pilgrims’ Icons from Jerusalem
Branca Ivanić Pilgrimage in medieval Serbia and "proskynetaria" : pilgrims’ icons from Jerusalem Series Byzantina 4, 55-69 2006 Pilgrimage in Medieval Serbia and Proskynetaria - Pilgrims' Icons from Jerusalem Branca Ivanić Belgrad, National Museum I am very pleased that the topic and occasion make it possible to draw a few lines from the medieval history of the Balkans, not only about objects of art originating from the Holy Land and found in Serbia, but also about the importance and essential links which connected the Serbian Orthodox church, dignitaries, monks and laymen, whether rich or not, to the center and source of every piety - the Holy Land and its pearl, the city of Jerusalem. As in other parts of Europe, Jerusalem was understood as the key model. Thus St. Sava of Serbia when he returned from Palestine decided to build churches based on the church on Mount Sion, also similar to the monastery of St. Sava of Palestine, following the common medieval practice of building churches modelled on the churches from the Holy Land, in particular the church of the Holy Sepulcher. The church of the Holy Apos tles in Peć, built after the Palestinian model, is the Mother church of the Serbian Orthodox Church.1 Secondly, St. Sava thought that the constitution of Jerusalem was better and more perfect than the constitution of the Great Church in Constantinople. The Jerusalem regulations are stricter concern ing the performance of duties by the monks in continuously observing the canonical hours and psalms, but certain regulations concerning fasting had been less strict in the Jerusalem constitution.
