Graham-Smith Contextualising Carroll 3 Summary This work presents a theory that Lewis Carroll's life and works were profoundly affected by a conflict between his logical world view and his religious beliefs. Three examina- tions are presented - the first of convention and logic in Carroll's life, the second of the nature of his religion and the third of his response to contemporary science. The thesis concludes that Victorian science brought Carroll's beliefs into contradiction, causing him to experience religious and existential doubts. It is suggested that an understand- ing of these doubts can inform an understanding of Carroll's relationships with Alice Liddell and other young girls, and indeed has repercussions for his entire life and works beyond the scope of this thesis. Two brief appendices expand upon issues mentioned in the text: the first considers the artefacts at Ripon Cathedral which are supposed by some to have influenced Carroll; and the second discusses EfJie's Dream-Garden, a children's book which bears some resemblance to the Alice story but which was published several years before that story was first told. Graham-Smith Contextualising Carroll 5 Preface The life of and works of Lewis Carroll present a highly rewarding field of research: the ground has been helpfully staked out by those who have gone before, but a little dig- ging can still unearth new connections and contradictions in the life and works of this complex but endearing man. Perhaps precisely because of this richness, it sometimes seems that there are as many different readings of Carroll as there are Carrollians; and while carrying out the research for this thesis between 1999 and 2003 I found myself among a body of critical and contextual sources as broad and diverse as Carroll's own canon. Finally, in early 2004, I submitted a thesis that sought to make sense of this im- mense corpus of primary and secondary material through the not very sophisticated device of juxtaposition. Unsurprisingly, I failed; but my examiners must have seen some merit in my ef- forts, as I was invited to restructure the text, so as to more clearly express my own po- sition, and resubmit. This thesis is the result of that process, and represents a major reworking of my earlier submission - more major, I suspect, than my examiners envis- aged. As they suggested, I returned to work with the intention of updating my thesis so as to advance and support my own argument as clearly and strongly as possible; but it rapidly became apparent that the best way to achieve this would be to go beyond the examiners' recommendations and redraft the text entirely. The material has therefore been rearranged into a progressive order, so that the argument may emerge with some- thing resembling logical consequence; and a commentary has been added which aims, at each stage of the argument, to make clear precisely what is being argued; why; and how this fits into the overall structure of the thesis. I hope it will be agreed by those who saw the earlier version that the result is an improvement. On the other side of the equation, I acknowledge that parts of my earlier submis- sion were barely relevant to my central argument, and for this edition I have ruthlessly excised such passagesin favour of a tighter focus. Thus, my earlier reflections on issues such as museums, colonialism and Victorian railways will no longer be found within D. Graham-Smith - Contextualising Carroll 6 this work, though if they are of interest to any reader then I should be happy to make them available. Among all these changes, I might have welcomed the opportunity to change my title, which seems to reflect the ethos of the earlier edition more than the argument of the current one. However, since this thesis is merely a revision of an earlier submission, it has been suggestedthat it would be inappropriate to change its title. Having reviewed many tens of thousands of words for this second submission, I can hardly complain at leaving those particular two alone. At any rate, though much has changed, the conclusion of my thesis remains the same: that Carroll's quirks can be at least partially illuminated by reference to religious doubts. In returning to this proposition, however, I hope the reader will enjoy and ap- preciate the new, more direct route I have plotted. Doncaster, November 2005 D.     Rupert Neelands Antiquarian Book and Manuscript Specialist Alice in Wonderland Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898), known to all by his pseudonym of Lewis Alice Pleasance Liddell, Carroll, was born into a high-church Anglican family living in Cheshire, the third aged seven, photo- graphed by Charles of eleven children. His father, also named Charles, obtained a double first in Dodgson in 1860 mathematics and classics at Christ Church, Oxford, and taught Mathematics at his college before marrying a cousin, Frances Jane “Fanny” Lutwidge from Hull, in 1827. Perpetual curate at Daresbury, Cheshire, from the year of his marriage, then from 1843, when his son was aged twelve, rector at Croft-on-Tees in Yorkshire, Charles Dodgson was the devout author of twenty-four books on theology and religious subjects. The son was a humourist. He possessed the natural ability to amuse children, and first practised storytelling, versifying, and punning on his own siblings. With this comic ability came the unshakeable gravitas of excelling at mathematics. Like his father, Charles junior read and taught mathematics at Christ Church, taking first class honours in the subject in 1854 and a second in classics. His exceptional talent Charles Lutwidge won him the Christ Church Mathematical Lectureship in 1855, and he remained a Dodgson at Christ mathematical professor until 1881. Church 1856-60 (John Rich Album, NPG) Charles’s jokes were rather literary or donnish in nature. His pseudonym, first used in March 1856 for publication of a poem on “Solitude”, was a piece of linguistic drollery, a translation of his own name into Latin as Carolus Ludovicus.

    118 Chapter 4 Chapter 4 Pusey’s Eucharistic Theology after the Sermon of 1843 4.1 Introduction Pusey’s biographer, Henry Parry Liddon, describes the sermon of 1843, The Holy Eucharist: a Comfort to the Penitent as ‘the most important sermon of Pusey’s life’.1 The effort Pusey expended in the sermon and the reaction to it affected him greatly. His subsequent two year prohibition from preaching before the University of Oxford was a source of great pain to Pusey and may go some of the way to explaining why he did not write another major piece on the Eucha- rist until 1851, some eight years later, and why he did not preach on this subject again until 1853. Pusey’s first major statement on the Eucharist after the sermon of 1843 took the form of a letter to the Bishop of London, Bishop Blomfield, which was pub- lished in 1851.2 Pusey believed this letter was necessary since the Bishop in his Charge3 to the clergy of the Diocese of London in 1850 had made certain comments on eucharistic doctrine which Pusey saw as applying to him. Pusey states in a ‘Notice’4 placed before the letter that he believed that The Rev. Wil- liam Dodsworth5 had not only misunderstood his teachings on several mat- ters, including the Eucharist, suggesting a different sense to what Pusey had actually taught, but that in so doing he had unduly influenced the views of Bishop Blomfield as expressed in his Charge.     The Other Side of the Lens: Lewis Carroll and the Art of Photography during the 19th Century is curated by Edward Wakeling, Allan Chapman, Janet McMullin and Cristina Neagu and will be open from 4 July ('Alice's Day') to 30 September 2015. The main purpose of this new exhibition is to show the range and variety of photographs taken by Lewis Carroll (aka Charles Dodgson) from topography to still-life, from portraits of famous Victorians to his own family and wide circle of friends.     Playing Around in Lewis Carroll’s Alice Books • Jan Susina Mathematician Charles Dodgson’s love of play and his need for rules came together in his use of popular games as part of the structure of the two famous children’s books, Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, he wrote under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. The author of this article looks at the interplay between the playing of such games as croquet and cards and the characters and events of the novels and argues that, when reading Carroll (who took a playful approach even in his academic texts), it is helpful to understand games and game play. Charles Dodgson, more widely known by his pseudonym Lewis Carroll, is perhaps one of the more playful authors of children’s literature. In his career, as a children’s author and as an academic logician and mathematician, and in his personal life, Carroll was obsessed with games and with various forms of play. While some readers are surprised by the seemingly split personality of Charles Dodgson, the serious mathematician, and Lewis Carroll, the imaginative author of children’s books, it was his love of play and games and his need to establish rules and guidelines that effectively govern play that unite these two seemingly disparate facets of Carroll’s personality. Carroll’s two best-known children’s books—Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking- Glass and What Alice Found There (1871)—use popular games as part of their structure. In Victoria through the Looking-Glass, Florence Becker Lennon has gone so far as to suggest about Carroll that “his life was a game, even his logic, his mathematics, and his singular ordering of his household and other affairs.

He is noted for his facility at word play, logic, and fantasy, and there are societies dedicated to the enjoyment and promotion of his works and the investigation of his life in many parts of the world, including the United Kingdom, Japan, the United States, and New Zealand. Antecedents Dodgson's family was predominantly northern English, with Irish connections. Conservative and High Church Anglican, most of Dodgson's ancestors were army officers or Church of England clergymen. His great-grandfather, also Charles Dodgson, had risen through the ranks of the church to become Bishop of Elphin. His grandfather, another Charles, had been an army captain, killed in action in Ireland in 1803, when his two sons were hardly more than babies. His mother's name was Frances Jane Lutwidge. The elder of these sons – yet another Charles Dodgson – was Carroll's father. He reverted to the other family tradition and took holy orders. He went to Westminster School, and thence to Christ Church, Oxford. He was mathematically gifted and won a double first degree, which could have been the prelude to a brilliant academic career.
