Patrons of the Human Experience: A History of the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research, 1941-2016 Abstract The Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research has played a critical but little-understodd role in the development of the social and biological sciences after 1941. For anthropology particularly, its programs have often helped redefine scholarly priorities and research trajectories. Its grants to doctoral students have functioned as an important early sign of scholarly legitimacy, a mark of belonging to the profession. The foundation's history also reflects general transformations in scientific partronage as new landscapes of federal, military, and private funding re-configured opportunities in the social sciences. In this account we track the evolution of the foundation in tandem with the evolution of anthropology during a period of dramatic change after 1941, looking at the Second World War context from which the foundation emerged and the ideas and experiences of those who played a key role in this history. We examine the long-term influence of a philanthropic foundation on the postwar emergence of an internationally oriented anthropology from a tiny, almost clubby discipline with a few key institutions and leaders to a mahor academic and scientific enterprise with sometimes revolutionary ideas about evolution, human biology, race, culture, power, gender, and social order. Mesoweb Publications The Rulers of Palenque INTRODUCTION The unsung pioneer in the study of Palenque’s dynastic history is Heinrich Berlin, who in three seminal studies (Berlin 1959, 1965, 1968) provided the essential outline of the dynasty and explicitly identified the name glyphs and likely accession dates of the major Early and Late Classic rulers (Stuart 2005:148-149). More prominent and well deserved credit has gone to Linda Schele and Peter Mathews (1974), who summarized the rulers of Palenque’s Late Classic and gave them working names in Ch’ol Mayan (Stuart 2005:149). The present work is partly based on the transcript by Phil Wanyerka of a hieroglyphic workshop presented by Schele and Mathews at the 1993 Maya Meet- ings at Texas (Schele and Mathews 1993). Essential recourse has also been made to the insights and decipherments of David Stuart, who made his first Palenque Round Table presentation in 1978 at the age of twelve (Stuart 1979) and has recently advanced our understanding of Palenque and its rulers immeasurably (Stuart 2005).

Györgyi Vajdovich’s article aims to describe the representation of female roles in Hungarian feature films of the period 1931 to 1944. The study is based on the analysis of the database that was created within the framework of the research project The Social History of Hungarian Cinema. Concentrating on the representation of female protagonists, this article first analyses the presence and prevalence of female figures in all Hungarian sound films (up until 2015). Then it narrows the scope of analysis to films produced between 1931 and 1944, and describes the typical professions and social and financial positions of female protagonists, as compared to those of male protagonists. The second half of the text examines the representation of female upward mobility in comedies – showing that according to the popular myths of the era, female upward mobility is principally realized through good marriage, with the narratives of the films rarely presenting the professional success of female protagonists and their possibilities of emancipation. Analysing the narrative patterns and gender roles in the films of the time, the text concludes that the narratives of female ascension, which mostly took form in comedies, reflected the desire of middle-class people to transgress the social and financial boundaries in society.     THE MALEVOLENT PRESIDENT HARRY S TRUMAN Harry S Truman has been referred to as “little” but he was not at all short. He has been referred to as “limited” and as “ignorant” although these descriptors do not accurately capture his actual conduct. The key to understanding his character and his conduct, and the key to understanding why it is that he has been referred to as “little,” is to grasp that here we had an utterly malevolent man — someone who took the greatest of delight in the doing of harm to those of whose existence he disapproved, and in general to anyone who sought in any way to oppose his desires. He said to his biographer, David McCullough, “I never gave anybody hell, I just told the truth and they thought it was hell,” and the historian repeated this saying on page 664 in his 2003 Pulitzer-Prize-winning biography TRUMAN exactly as if the making of such an assertion meant that that assertion needed to be the truth. However, when Truman said that to his biographer, he was merely lying — lying again. All he ever knew to do was give people hell, and lie. In fact we can safely assert that this man’s life –like that “S” middle initial– stood for nothing at all. To avoid persecu- tion as Jews, Wolf and his family moved first to England and then to the United States, where they settled in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York. Introduction Though the Maya of the Classic Period were deeply concerned with astrology (Thompson, 1972), it is well established that they also incorporated their astronomical and calendrical data into an intricate, even convoluted, mathematical discipline (Closs, 1988). Nowhere is this better evidenced than in the ingenious constructions of the Venus and eclipse tables contained in the Dresden Codex, a pre-Columbian Maya hieroglyphic book. A more purely mathematical objective, expressed throughout the Maya calendrical manipulations, was the determination of the least common multiples of various astronomical and calendrical cycles (Morley, 1938). The Maya also incorporated mathematically contrived Long Count dates and 'Distance' numbers into their codices and inscriptions (Lounsbury, 1978).
