Robin Lyle CONGRATULATIONS To Charles Haddad for obtaining his PhD from the Univer- sity of the Free State. The title of his study was “Advances in the systematics and ecology of the African Corinnidae spiders (Arachnida: Araneae), with emphasis on the Casti- aneirinae”. This is a very comprehensive study and deals with two aspects of the Castianeirinae, namely their ecol- ogy as well as their systematics, and it is a very important contribution towards our knowledge of this family of spi- ders, especially in the Afrotropical Region. An illustrated key to all the genera is provided as well as a phylogenetic analysis of the relationships of the Afrotropical Castianeiri- nae. Charles revised the eight genera of the subfamily Castianeirinae known from the Afrotropical Region and described two genera as new to science. He studied 62 species, of which 37 are new species and 20 redescribed for the first time. -

Munis Entomology & Zoology, 12 (2): 433-469] ABSTRACT: The list provides an annotated checklist of all the spiders from Turkey. A total of 1117 spider species and two subspecies belonging to 52 families have been reported. The list is dominated by members of the families Gnaphosidae (145 species), Salticidae (143 species) and Linyphiidae (128 species) respectively. KEY WORDS: Araneae, Checklist, Turkey, Fauna To date, Turkish researches have been published three checklist of spiders in the country. The first checklist was compiled by Karol (1967) and contains 302 spider species. The second checklist was prepared by Bayram (2002). He revised Karol’s (1967) checklist and reported 520 species from Turkey. Latest checklist of Turkish spiders was published by Topçu et al. (2005) and contains 613 spider records. A lot of work have been done in the last decade about Turkish spiders. So, the checklist of Turkish spiders need to be updated. We updated all checklist and prepare a new checklist using all published the available literatures. This list contains 1117 species of spider species and subspecies belonging to 52 families from Turkey (Table 1). This checklist is compile from literature dealing with the Turkish spider fauna. The aim of this study is to determine an update list of spider in Turkey. -

Calculations of the number of spider species in the post-Soviet republics and different physiographical areas are provided in the introductory part. Abstract - An introduction to Italian spiders (Arachnida Araneae). This work includes a general introduction, that deals with the external morphology, biology and ecology of spiders, followed by notes about collecting, preserving and studying spiders, and an Italian and English glossary. The second part contains Italian and English updated keys to the 49 families and 375 genera of Italian spiders (excluding the 126 genera of Linyphiidae). VOL 35 NEW PHOTO IDENTIFICATION GUIDES JULY 2020 “Biodiversity is one of the most important concepts in contemporary biology, with a broad range of applications” Twenty-three years ago a group of South African arachnologists decided to initiate the South African National Survey of Arachnida, or SANSA as it is generally known. For the first time, researchers from universities, museums and institutions like the ARC and SANBI worked together on a national biodiversity project, which is focused on documenting the arachnids of South Africa. This national project has several aims: to survey and document the arachnid fauna of South Africa to describe new species to consolidate all the available data on South African arachnids into one relational database to make this biodiversity information available to the scientific community to address issues concerning their conservation and sustainable use of the local arachnid fauna. SANSA highlights the importance of a national inventory, the relevance of quality database management, and the significance of capacity development in improving the quality and integration of biodiversity information. This process has strengthened arachnid research in South Africa and enabled the production of a National Species List for South Africa, a ma- jor objective of SANSA. DA The country now has information for the distribution, lifestyle and conservation status of all known species. There is a renewed interest in spiders, particularly at universities where spider surveys form part of postgraduate research activities. However, the biggest con- straint remains the large number of species level determinations required for this kind of survey work. Although spiders are taxonomically better known than most invertebrate taxa, spider systematics is still unstable, even at family level. -

We analysed an amount of 1124 references, resulting in a list of 1670 species and subspecies, grouped in 434 genera and 53 families. Information on spider biodiversity in Italy has increased rapidly in the last years, going from 404 species at the end of XIX century, to 1400 in the 1990s, to the current 1670. However, the knowledge on the distribution of the Italian species is far from being complete and it seems likely that there are still new species to be found or described. The Italian spider fauna is character- ized by the presence of a relevant number of endemic species (342). Concerning families, Linyphiidae show the highest number of spe- cies (477) and the highest number of endemics (114). -

The number of records as well as its abundance status is given for each species. The list of doubtful and erroneous species records contains another 57 species, which are either invalid species or their species records in the Caucasus Ecoregion are based on doubtful records, misidentifications or related reasons. Despite having been studied for nearly 150 years, the species numbers of invertebrate taxa in this ecoregion (and almost all other ecoregions as well) remain obscure due to lack of diversity databases, unresolved taxonomic/systematic questions and insufficient research efforts, e.g. local and regional faunistic studies. THE SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL RED LIST VOL 38 OF SPIDERS: PATTERNS, THREATS, AND JUNE 2021 CONSERVATION Triage in conservation biology necessitates the prioritization of species and eco- systems for conservation. Although highly diverse, ecologically important, and charismatic, spiders are rarely considered. With 2,253 known species, South Africa’s spider diversity is among the high- est in the world. A 22-year initiative culminating in a national assessment of all the South African species saw a 33% increase in described species and a 350% rise in specimen accessions of the national collection annually. Endemism is high, at 60% of all South African species. Levels of endemicity are particularly high in Fynbos, Succulent Karoo and Forests. Relative to its area, Forests have three times more endemics than any of the other biomes, followed by the Indian Ocean Coastal Belt. A total of 127 species (5.7%) are either rare or endangered. Threats to these species are largely linked to habitat destruction in the form of urbanization and agriculture. The bulk (62.8%) of taxa are of least concern, but many species are data deficient (27%). Predicted large-scale diversity patterns are confounded by the localized na- DA ture of distribution records. Best estimates of compositional turnover point to an east-west bias in our understanding and conservation of spiders in the country, a bias that is most acute in the north-western parts of the country because this region has seen less collecting and has fewer conservation estates. In general, rare and threatened species are mainly ground-dwelling taxa that are either relictual or have poor dispersal abilities. -

The spiders (Arachnida, Araneae) of the Llobregat delta (Barcelona, Spain); first records Abstract: The results are presented of a series of direct sampling efforts carried out between 2011 and 2013 at one of the most im- portant wetlands on the Iberian Mediterranean coast, the Llobregat delta. A total of 92 species are listed; of these, 16 had not been previously recorded from Barcelona province, 17 are first records for Catalonia and two are new to the Iberian fauna. -

Abstract Although the European fauna of spiders is relatively well studied, in the Balkans still have places for which little or almost nothing is known, especially Kosovo, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Montenegro. The spider fauna of Montenegro is still poorly known, and the number of relevant publications is very low, even with catalogs and quoted information is about 90. Only for the cave fauna has more in-depth observations. The aim of this study is to summarize and presents all available data of the spiders of Montenegro, both from the literature and from original records. A total of 144 spider species were collected and after incorporating literature reports, the number of identified species is 289, from 38 families. From them 84 species and two families are new for the country. The presented study provides the first annotated checklist and catalog of the spiders in Montenegro (as a result of a database with 1150 rows/records) with additional taxonomic and faunistic data. Introduction The Republic of Montenegro is located in southeastern Europe and is a territory with high biodiversity owing to the variety of climate, topography, and geology found here, and the long-term ecological and evolutionary history of this region as a biological crossroads and Ice Age refuge.
