The City of Orillia is located in Central Ontario, on the shores of Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching and just an hour north of the Greater Area (GTA). Two major highway corridors provide access to the north, south, east and west. Highway 400/Highway 11 runs north/south from Toronto, through Orillia and then north towards North Bay and beyond. Highway 12 runs east/west from Oshawa and the GTA to the shores of . Orillia is approximately 200 kilometres (140 miles) from the /U.S. border, and located within 10 hours’ drive from major Canadian and U.S. markets along the and into Quebec. (Refer to Page 15 for distances from Orillia to U.S. and Canadian cities.) Orillia is also a port-of-call on the Trent-Severn Waterway System, a 240-mile recreational waterway link between and Georgian Bay.

AGRICULTURE Orillia is surrounded by productive farmland. The soil capability in the area has been primarily identified as Class 2 by the Government of Canada. The deep soils have good water-holding capacity, can be managed with little difficulty and are moderately high to high in productivity for a fairly wide range of crops. The dominant products of the area are dairy products, mixed livestock and livestock products, vegetables and mixed grains such as oats, wheat, barley, corn and soybean.

MINERALS The Orillia area has deposits of sand, gravel, clay and limestone. There are several limestone quarries in the area. A major quarry is located at Uhthoff, a few miles north of Orillia. There are two other locations east of Orillia near Brechin. The sand and gravel pits of the area are located on moraines and beaches in the surrounding district.

FORESTRY The Government of Canada has acknowledge the area as one having only slight limitations to the growth of commercial forest. The Forest is the largest forest tract in Ontario with more than 31,000 acres. These tracts provide environmental, economic and social benefits to the County in addition to countless kilometers of recreation trails. Although wood no longer plays a dominant role in the Orillia economy a number of sawmills and wood oriented industries still exist in the area.

LAKE SIMCOE AND LAKE COUCHICHING These two lakes are an important natural resource providing the City water and as a natural attraction for the tourism industry. As part of the Trent-Severn waterway, the Port of Orillia is a popular destination for both sail and power boaters. Parks Canada estimate that the annual boat traffic on the Trent-Severn system is over 25,000 vessels of all sizes capable of navigating the system. The Orillia & District Chamber of Commerce operates the ‘Port of Orillia’ throughout the summer season. The tourism industry also benefits from an abundance of Provincial and private campgrounds, along with excellent fishing and swimming.
