Instruction is conducted in the native language of the country of study and our objective is to provide an environment where both theoretical and pragmatic thought can flourish. We emphasize critical thinking and creative insight. We also encourage students to develop innovative ideas and perspectives.

There is increased demand in today’s global community for individuals who can meet the challenges of international competition and cooperation. GSIS was developed to meet these challenges of globalization in the 21st century, by training experts in the fields of international relations and regional studies. As a result, our alumni are now prominent leaders in multinational corporations, teaching and research institutes, NGOs and government agencies.

I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to those individuals who have helped GSIS with invaluable contributions. We will continue to excel at our national goal educating internationally qualified professionals. The Graduate School of International Studies Hanyang University GSIS 1. History

The Founding of the Graduate School

In the early 1970s, Hanyang University established the Institute for Sino-Soviet Studies (ISSS) to promote scholarship on the communist bloc countries, with a particular emphasis on China and the former Soviet Union. The quality of research and academic activities brought ISSS widespread recognition as the leading research institute in the nation.

Based on the success of ISSS and Hanyang University's commitment to international studies programs, the Korean government awarded Hanyang a five-year grant in 1996 to establish a graduate school of international studies.

Subsequently, the Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies (GSAS) was founded in 1997 with four departments: Chinese, Russian, American and Japanese Studies. ISSS concurrently became GSAS’affiliated research institute under the new name, the Asia-Pacific Research Center.

After five successful years, GSAS gained recognition as a leading educational institution in regional and international studies. To meet the changing nature of international relations in the 21st century, GSAS was renamed as the Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) in 2001. GSIS now consists of five departments including a Korean Studies program.

Developing Regional Specialists

The primary educational objective of GSIS is to train highly competent specialists in Chinese, Russian, American, Japanese and Korean studies. Their expertise will be essential in national and global decision making on issues of international politics, economy, organizations, law and other related fields of specialization for the 21st century.
