  • Between Liminality and Transgression: Experimental Voice in Avant-Garde Performance
BETWEEN LIMINALITY AND TRANSGRESSION: EXPERIMENTAL VOICE IN AVANT-GARDE PERFORMANCE _________________________________________________________________ A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Theatre and Film Studies in the University of Canterbury by Emma Johnston ______________________ University of Canterbury 2014 ii Abstract This thesis explores the notion of ‘experimental voice’ in avant-garde performance, in the way it transgresses conventional forms of vocal expression as a means of both extending and enhancing the expressive capabilities of the voice, and reframing the social and political contexts in which these voices are heard. I examine these avant-garde voices in relation to three different liminal contexts in which the voice plays a central role: in ritual vocal expressions, such as Greek lament and Māori karanga, where the voice forms a bridge between the living and the dead; in electroacoustic music and film, where the voice is dissociated from its source body and can be heard to resound somewhere between human and machine; and from a psychoanalytic perspective, where the voice may bring to consciousness the repressed fears and desires of the unconscious. The liminal phase of ritual performance is a time of inherent possibility, where the usual social structures are inverted or subverted, but the liminal is ultimately temporary and conservative. Victor Turner suggests the concept of the ‘liminoid’ as a more transgressive alternative to the liminal, allowing for permanent and lasting social change. It may be in the liminoid realm of avant-garde performance that voices can be reimagined inside the frame of performance, as a means of exploring new forms of expression in life.

  • Album: „A Kiss Before You Go‟ – Released May 7Th Label: Propeller
Artist: Album: „A Kiss Before You Go‟ – released May 7th Label: Propeller Records “The best gig of Glastonbury 2011” - Steve Lamacq Katzenjammer are set to release their second album, ’A Kiss Before You Go’ on May 7th through Propeller Records. The album is their first UK release and follows the incredible commercial and critical success of their debut album „Le Pop‟, not to mention their relentless touring across Europe, Scandinavia and the US. The band are a four-piece, all-girl outfit of multi-instrumentalists that perform swinging, singing, cowboy-inspired fairground burlesque with all-out riotous, folk, pop & gypsy punk – not forgoing the occasional ballad. The feisty femmes descended upon the UK festival circuit in 2011, leaving audiences enthralled at Glastonbury, Cambridge Folk Festival and Bestival and counting Steve Lamacq in an ever increasing UK fanbase, leading to a string of sold-out UK gig dates. Katzenjammer are Anne Marit, Marianne, Solveig and Turid, „A Kiss Before You Go‟ was produced by Mike Hartung (Maelstrom, Jaga Jazzist, A-Ha) in Oslo. The album is a vibrant hotchpotch of Balkan flavours, cabaret clubs, comic strips and straight up Pop. They rip up the rule book good and proper with this boundary defying LP; twelve songs which are as eclectic as they are identifiably Katzenjammer. Serving up an overflowing stein of Germanic cheer with their eponymous opener, the tone effortlessly moves from melancholic waltz -„Lady Marlene‟ - to vaudevillian, honky-tonk knees- up ‘I Will Dance (When I Walk Away)’ the band’s first single, released March 12th. Then there‟s „Soviet Trumpeter‟ and „Gypsy Flee‟ – songs which by their very namesake capture the group‟s Balkan essence – and „Rock-Paper-Scissors‟ - a gusty, below deck fiddle jig which gives the banjo and the mandolin a good airing.

  • Get 'Em out by Friday the Official Release Dates 1968-78 Introduction
Genesis: Get ‘Em Out By Friday The Official Release Dates 1968-78 Introduction Depending on where one looks for the information, the original release dates of Genesis singles and albums are often misreported. This article uses several sources, including music paper cuttings, websites and books, to try and determine the most likely release date in the UK for their officially released product issued between 1968 and 1978. For a detailed analysis to be completed beyond 1978 will require the input of others that know that era far better than I with the resources to examine it in appropriate levels of detail. My own collection of source material essentially runs dry after 1978. As most people searching for release dates are likely to go to Wikipedia that is where this search for the truth behind Genesis’ back catalogie. The dates claimed on Wikipedia would themselves have come from a number of sources referenced by contributors over the years but what these references lack is the evidence to back up their claims. This article aims to either confirm or disprove these dates with the added bonus of citing where this information stems from. It’s not without a fair share of assumptions and educated deductions but it offers more on this subject than any previously published piece. The main sources consulted in the writing of this article are as follows: 1. The Genesis File Melody Maker 16 December 1972 2. Genesis Information Newsletter Issue No. 1 October 1976 3. Wax Fax by Barry Lazzell - a series of articles on Genesis releases published in Sounds over several weeks in 1977 4.

  • BULLET for MY VALENTINE 15. November 2016 Ludwigsburg MHP Arena
BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE 15.
