Image: Mustang From an underprivileged upbringing in Madras, India, Ramanujan earns admittance to Cambridge University during WWI, where he becomes a pioneer in mathematical theories. Academy Award-winner Jeremy Irons delivers a terrific performance as Cambridge University Professor G.H. Hardy, who is inspired and captivated by the mathematician’s ground-breaking theories. • Between Liminality and Transgression: Experimental Voice in Avant-Garde Performance
BETWEEN LIMINALITY AND TRANSGRESSION: EXPERIMENTAL VOICE IN AVANT-GARDE PERFORMANCE _________________________________________________________________ A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Theatre and Film Studies in the University of Canterbury by Emma Johnston ______________________ University of Canterbury 2014 ii Abstract This thesis explores the notion of ‘experimental voice’ in avant-garde performance, in the way it transgresses conventional forms of vocal expression as a means of both extending and enhancing the expressive capabilities of the voice, and reframing the social and political contexts in which these voices are heard. I examine these avant-garde voices in relation to three different liminal contexts in which the voice plays a central role: in ritual vocal expressions, such as Greek lament and Māori karanga, where the voice forms a bridge between the living and the dead; in electroacoustic music and film, where the voice is dissociated from its source body and can be heard to resound somewhere between human and machine; and from a psychoanalytic perspective, where the voice may bring to consciousness the repressed fears and desires of the unconscious. The liminal phase of ritual performance is a time of inherent possibility, where the usual social structures are inverted or subverted, but the liminal is ultimately temporary and conservative. Victor Turner suggests the concept of the ‘liminoid’ as a more transgressive alternative to the liminal, allowing for permanent and lasting social change. It may be in the liminoid realm of avant-garde performance that voices can be reimagined inside the frame of performance, as a means of exploring new forms of expression in life.

  • Travel Report JO March09.Doc – Julia Overton March 2009 2 Screen Australia – March 2009
T R IDFA & World Congress of Science and Factual Producers 2008, O with additional London meetings P Julia Overton, Investment and Development Manager – Documentary The objectives for attending IDFA and World Congress of Science and E Factual Producers were many. To have face-to-face meetings with potential co-producing partners, broadcasters, commissioning editors, sales agents and distributors who could work with Australian companies to enable R developed projects to be produced and finished projects to find a place in the market. To support the Australian filmmakers attending the events – in the case of IDFA it was those who had projects screening in the festival or who were pitching projects in the Forum or private meetings. To observe which L documentaries were finding an audience, and in what form. And to establish new contacts, particularly in the area of science producing, where the cost of production is such that numerous co-production partners are usually E essential. Attending the two events back-to-back was an interesting conjunction of market/festival. It is best expressed via two conversations I had on my first V day at each event. When asking a filmmaker at IDFA why they were there I was told it was with a film which was a ‘post-Brechtian deconstruction of the Israeli Palestinian conflict’ and on asking the same question at World A Congress the response was ‘to sell 26 hours on killer reptiles’. It gave a wonderful insight to the diversity of the world that is documentary. London R Before the festivals, time was spent in London having meetings with some of those with whom Screen Australia deals on a regular basis.

The Spirit of ‘45 – in cinemas 15 March 2013 Presents A film directed by KEN LOACH THE SPIRIT OF ‘45 Out 15 March 2013 Director Ken Loach’s latest film The Spirit of ’45 is an impassioned documentary about how the spirit of unity which buoyed Britain during the war years carried through to create a vision of a fairer, united society. Set for general release on 15 March, there will be a special one off nationwide satellite screening event on Sunday 17 March followed by a Q&A panel discussion with Ken Loach. “The achievements of the ’45 Labour government have largely been written out of our history. From near economic collapse we took leading industries into public ownership and established the Welfare State. Generosity, mutual support and co-operation were the watch words of the age. It is time to remember the determination of those who were intent on building a better world.” - Ken Loach The Spirit of ’45 theatrical release will be supported by a special interactive project in collaboration with the filmmakers and commissioned by the BFI, Film 4.0, and Creative England who have all been exploring and spearheading innovative ways to support releases by creatively using digital technologies. www.thespiritof45.com The Spirit of ‘45 – in cinemas 15 March 2013 The Spirit of ’45 vividly illustrates the optimism of a nation and how a new, fairer state was created from the rubble of war. Using film resourced from Britain’s regional and national archives, alongside sound recordings and contemporary interviews from the people who lived through the years of change including Tony Benn, Loach creates a rich political and social narrative of the years directly following WWII that would pave the way for the creation of a new state where the character of the times was to be our brother’s and our sister’s keeper.

  • Title: New Gay Sincerity' and Andrew Haigh's Weekend (UK, 2011)
1 Title: New Gay Sincerity’ and Andrew Haigh’s Weekend (UK, 2011) Author: Andrew Moor Contact Details: Department of English, Manchester Metropolitan University [email protected] Biography: Andrew Moor is Reader in Cinema History at Manchester Metropolitan University. He is the author of Powell and Pressburger: A Cinema of Magic Spaces (IB Tauris, 2005) and co-editor of The Cinema of Michael Powell: International Perspectives on an English Film-maker (BFI) and Signs of Life: Medicine and Cinema (Wallflower Press, 2005). He has written widely on aspects of Queer and British cinema. Acknowledgements: Sue Harper and Andy Medhurst kindly read early drafts of this article, and provided useful comments. Their input was gratefully received and is happily acknowledged. 2 ‘New Gay Sincerity’ and Andrew Haigh’s Weekend In the last few years an important new aesthetic direction for non-straight cinema has emerged. A handful of films have chosen a mode of frank, observational realism, capturing the everyday lives of gay people in ways that ‘feel’ authentic but which are far from naïve about the image-making process. Adapting Jim Collins’s concept of ‘New Sincerity’, this article proposes that the new trend in gay cinema can be thought of as a mode of ‘New Gay Sincerity’.1 Collins first coined his phrase to account for conservative genre-cinema in the late 1980s and early 1990s that had turned its back on forms of parody and self- reflexivity to present instead an ‘aura’ of authenticity. It signifies a tentative reaction against the polished irony and the proliferated textuality of postmodernism.
